Android :: Creative Ideas For Stopping Email Spam?
Oct 19, 2010
I'm trying to help someone who'd like a way to stop email spam from reaching his Android phone. I understand this is usually best done from the email server side of things, but this is where we are right now. This is regarding his work email, and I've suggested that he have gmail fetch it for him so they can filter it (does this work for fetching? I know it works great for emails sent directly to gmail), alas, he says he only has an imap server and no Pop3 server for gmail to fetch. I looked in the market and found only one not terribly highly rated app for filtering email spam on Android phones. If you've tried that email filtering app, it worked?

the sound quality on cellphones when playing music on headphones/earphones is not that good. Someone might suggest boosting the audio file with pc software or even using a 3rd party app to make the sound better/louder on the phone, but this usually does not work that much, if not make the sound even worse.
So this got me thinking... what if we could somehow harness the power of our portable x-fi go soundcard. It's a soundcard integrated in a USB stick.

So what would theoretically be needed if this is to be implemented.
* Female USB to Male MicroUSB/MiniUSB cable, to make a connection between the stick and the cellphone.
* Android drivers for Creative X-Fi Go, so that the cellphone can detect the stick and utilize its magic power.
* If the cellphone is not able to give enough power to the USB card, there's always the possibility to split the power cable of the usb cable and connect it to a external battery.

I'm trying to use the Mail client on my Hero to send emails, but it seems that Three is blocking port 25. I've asked my hosting company if they can allow me to use port 587, but in the meantime, does anybody know of how else I can send email from my Hero?

I really like having a clean homescreen and I don't really like having to navigate far for my most used apps.On my main screen I have the Beautiful Widgets Flip clock and weather widget, the one that takes up two rows. And as I said, I like things clean, so I'd like to be able to see my background so I don't want to clutter the space with icons. So what would be the best way to make, clear, or near transparent icons for my apps? I thought about Better Cut, but still I need the actual pictures of my apps to like photoshop them. Any ideas on how to come up with them?Is there anything I can find on my phone or get the icons off my phone?

This is my first post and an aspiring programmer (I guess you can call me that) I want to know what type of input would be the best for a 2d game using only the touchscreen? I want to know from a gamer's point of view. I want to know if the buttons mapped on the screen is more user friendly or that "Point and click" type of input like what you would do with a mouse but touching instead? Or something dramatic with the multi touch that some devices have, but that limits the audience to a couple devices.People may argue an all touch screen input is a terrible Idea, but look at all the Android devices, most if not all have touchscreen and some ONLY have touch screen. So I would like to reach the majority of the audience.

So far I have been quite unhappy with my Seidio Innocase for my droid. I have the Sapphire blue case, but have gone through about 5 of them through RMA's. My top half of the case always seems to progresively get looser and looser has time goes on. They have shipped me brand new cases that are supposed to fit better then the old ones. They always start off nice and tight, but slowly get looser and looser. Anyone else having trouble with this? Im tempted now to completely return it all together because RMA's are a real pain.So anyone have any suggestions for a different case that they love for their phone? I have tried the plastic hard shells from Verizon but those were terrible, other then that I am open to suggestions.

I've noticed that a lot of comments on top apps are from comment spammers. When is something going to be done about this market wide problem? There are probably less than 20 of these users who hit virtually every top app with comment spam. My app is getting hit every single day by these people. It's really getting annoying.

Here's the deal:I am new Voice user, just got in last weekend with the Google Voice for Students thing. I set up a GV number for safekeeping but I'm not using it for calls or SMS. Voice is only set up on my Incredible to handle voicemail. So, tonight, I got a notification on my phone. Upon looking, I see that there's a message in Voice despite having not received any call. It's from an unknown number and obviously a spam message.
Two questions:
1.) How did this message get to me? i.e. did someone text my GV number or what?
2.) Is spam going to be a big problem with Google Voice? If so, I'm afraid I will very quickly switch back to my carrier's service.

I have googled the error and it seems to be attributed to either Angry Birds, Barnes and Noble or ubersoft.
I dont have any such software on my phone....... In fact I dont have that much software at all on my phone.

I've got a problem with a flood of touch events destroying my game's framerate while there is a touch active. Basically onTouchEvent is called (with getAction = ACTION_MOVE, x = 0 and y = 0) about a hundred times a second for as long as the finger is touching the screen. I've tried returning from onTouchEvent straight away, and even removing its implementation at all, but it doesn't help - the app slows to a crawl as soon as a finger is down. I asked on the IRC channel and Romain Guy advised me that they're aware of the problem but didn't have time to fix it for Cupcake, so I'm not expecting a full solution!

I have a AppWidget, after I delete it from HomeScreen it seems not stopping the AlarmManager attached with it. I have supported it with the AlarmManger, that call the ProviderImplementation class every 1 minute and in onReceive I put the code to call onUpdate. and in onDelete I explicitly stop the alarm, but it seems it is running continously and not stopping. any cure of it ?
I have stopped it with cancel(pendingintent) function.

My appWidget is working well. When it's installed and used by user, a Thread is launched to refresh view (like a flipper). Even if the screen is off, the thread is continuing...perfect for me... But after 3 minutes, it's stopped.
Does it a VM restriction avoiding some bad development usage?
How can I use this type of service? Develop a service in place of my thread?

I have both ADW and LP on my Droid. If I go into Settings/applications/ manage applications and select a launcher (that has widgets) and use the force stop option on the launcher, will the widgets set up with that launcher continue to run? Or would they be stopped as well? Would it matter if bother the running and stopped launcher had some of the same widgets?

Is it possible to stop an Android app from the console? Something like: adb stop com.my.app.package
It would speed up our testing process so much. Right now we uninstall/install the app each time to make sure the manual test cases start with a clean state.

My service spawns a new thread, and stops it according to the typically recommended java method of interrupt()'ing. When I stop the service, I stop the thread in onDestroy(). The service is stopped, and the interrupt code is reached. However, soon enough the thread restarts from the beginning of the Runnable.code...

Ever since I got my Android phone, or perhaps it was the unlimited texting, I began getting one our two spam texts a day. My question is this: When I receive such text messages, which often ask me to respond in a certain way (by sending back the word STOP for instance) in order for me to unsubscribe, should I respond? It's a dilemma because I want the spam to stop but I don't want to confirm the validity of my number either (that would invite more spam).
