Android :: Check An Incoming Caller Is A Contact In Droid?
Feb 3, 2010
When an Android phone receives a call it automatically checks if the call exists in its own contact database. I was wondering if there is a simple way to access that information. I have a PhoneStateListener that performs certain actions during a ringing state, and I want to check if the incoming caller is in the contacts list.
Is there a way to do this without going through the Contacts ContentProvider?

Suppose my application xyz stores a few contacts(just like in the address book/ telephone book). Other contacts are by-default stored in my Android address book. Suppose I receive a call on the handset with my app xyz running in the background. All I need is to fetch the Caller's name from the application xyz and display this name as" Akash Calling..." instead of "+91... calling..." assuming that caller's details are present in the application say, his name and none of his details in the actual address book. Is this feasible.

I've searched for threads/answers about this issue but I haven't found any...and I'm a noob to the forum (and 2.1) so bear with me / don't eat me alive.
I enjoyed the Facebook syncing on 1.5, but I don't really have any interest in bringing over my Facebook contact photos as caller ID pictures (it's annoying when someone posts a picture of a car, for example, as their default picture -- my friend is not a Toyota). I do like seeing status updates in my People app and having access to a unified "updates" panel in People.
I've gone into the "link" settings and changed the photo manually to the Google Contacts photo that I specified, and that works fantastically -- until Facebook for HTC Sense does its hourly sync and overwrites that preference with the contact's default Facebook picture AGAIN.
I've tried syncing, un-syncing, removing the sync option, etc. in the past 2 leaks and this problem remains. Am I missing something or is this just another annoying beta bug that HOPEFULLY will be gone in OTA?

Is anyone else using GV with their HERO? My incoming calls are not displaying a caller ID. Anyone else having this issue?I just checked and even if I call my Sprint # directly I have no incoming caller ID displayed.This must be a Sprint issue and not Google Voice.

I'm facing a weird problem. Whenever someone calls me, his/her image appears black from the halfway down. While calling someone , it is okay but the problem occurs only during incoming calls. I've tried installing the stock ROM but still got this problem.

I switched to a Droid X from a BlackBerry. On the BlackBerry, not only could you set phone and SMS custom alerts and ringtones (in addition to custom ring profiles for certain contacts), you could also set email alerts.
So for example, if my husband emailed me, it would ring a custom alert for his email, not just for an email to that particular account. That meant I didn't need to look at my phone every time got an email to see who it was from. (I have a web-based business and I get literally hundreds of emails every day.)
On the BlackBerry, not only were there custom inboxes for each email account, there was a "universal" inbox. There doesn't seem to be a function exactly like that for the Android (I tried adding my Gmail accounts to the one there, but it keeps defaulting me back to each Gmail box).
Is there an app for this?
I have Ringo Pro for my custom sms and call alerts, but an email alert would be a lifesaver. There are a lot of BB converts to Android (and I'm sure more to come) who would gladly pay for an app to handle this. So far, it's the only thing I can see where the Droid X doesn't beat the BB.

So I have something like 470 people in my Google Contacts under "All Contacts" and only about 60 under "My Contacts." I like it that way, because then my Droid contact list isn't full to the brim with people whose numbers I really don't need at the touch of my fingertips. That being said, however, it would be very cool if somehow the "All Contacts" section of my Google Contacts could be used to identify incoming phone calls.
For instance:
I want my Brother's phone number in My Contacts so I can call him.
I don't want my ex girlfriend's Stacey's number in My Contacts because I don't need to call her.
I still have my ex-girlfiend's contact info under "All Contacts" because there's no reason to delete it outright.
I would, however, like for my Droid's caller ID to tell me that the person calling me is "Stacey" instead of "unknown caller."
Am I asking too much? I know I could just add everyone to "My Contacts" and that would work, I just don't necessarily want 500 people in my Droid phone book. It's unnecessary. Or even apps that do this?

Is there any way to black list a contact from your incoming calls and messages? I got someone who will not leave me alone no matter what I try.. any way to block them entirely from my Droid without getting Verizon involved or having to change my number?

I know there have been sporadic complaints of random things happening (or not happening) since the update this week. So far, I myself haven't had any complaints, but I just noticed that if I get a call WHILE I'm on a call, only the phone number of the new caller shows up, and none of their contact info. I remember the phone showing me everything before, i.e. name/caller ID photo etc. Is anyone else having this problem or find a way to fix it? I don't think I've reset it by turning it off and pulling the battery yet, not that I know that would do any good, and I'm not doing a factory reset. I've got a ton of apps I'd rather not lose.

I was setting up some photos for the Photo Caller ID function for incoming calls and was rather disappointed at the quality of the image that comes up. I either add an image to the contact in the People app or I go to the gallery and chose to "Set as" a contact icon. The picture pops up and you are given a little square crop/zoom tool to chose the portion of the picture that you want as you icon/photo caller ID. When I stretch the square OUT as big as possible to crop and then set the image with the contact, the caller ID image that comes up is good. However, any cropping/zooming is significantly Degrades/Pixelates the image that is chosen.
I'm not using the FULL 8MB resolution (set to 5MP) for the camera and I know if you crop and zoom any image, the more you zoom the worse the quality of the picture, But the 5MP shots I have should be MORE THAN sufficient to produce a little square of a photo caller ID. I had photo caller ID that popped up on my Palm Centro with photos was cropped to 320 x 320 and saved with LOW resolution and those photos were very clear. Even with the crop and zoom that is required to produce the contact/photo caller ID image, the 5MP photos I am using should be more than sufficient to produce a clear image. Is there a fix/trick for the quality to improve? Here we have this big beautiful screen and you crop a nice-sized 5MP picture for a tiny square caller ID photo and the quality is horrible.

Although, not all facebook contacts come in blurry. some are perfect? This may sound like a small problem but an annoying one! Does anyone know why are how to fix this?

My bro just updated to 2.3.4 on his Atrix, same as me. Now when he gets a call or text, it only shows the number and not the name. These are regular contacts already set up in his contacts list. I haven't been able to figure it out as it works fine on mine.

I am assigning to an ImageView contacts images using this code:
mPhotoView = (ImageView) findViewById(R.id.photo);
mPhotoView.setImageURI(objItem.getPhotoUri());
If the contact has no image, this does nothing, and no error is raised.
When there is no image, I want to add a default image. So I need to check either if the image was added to the view, or check that the URI holds some image data
Than I will set default image by this:
mPhotoView.setImageResource(R.drawable.ic_contact_picture_2);

I got my new Desire at the weekend and set up Facebook on it.
The issue I have is that my sister has our home number listed on her Facebook profile as a contact number. I have linked this profile to her contact.
I have also set up 'Home' as a person on the phone. But when the home number calls me, it shows it as being my sister calling rather than home.
Is there anyway to remove the home number from my sister's contact details without de-syncing her Facebook profile?

I have a HTC Hero running the latest 1.5 software off of HTC site. One thing I have noticed, is that if I have any photos associated with a contact, the photo is heavily pixelated when it is displayed via an incoming/outgoing call.
I am using Gmail Sync to push email, calender and contacts. If I use the Pre or iPhone, then it shows up fine.
Is this a known bug? I have tried re-creating the image on the Hero - but once I select the area, it pixelates it again.

Well, this is day two of the new phone and for the most part it has been working well. However, I just realized that call history/caller ID doesn't really seem to be working. If I go to the call history page, everybody shows up as "unknown", even though they are all saved in my contacts (manually input). Also, it doesn't list the numbers - just "unknown" and the time the call was made/sent/etc. If I try to add the number to contacts from the call history page, it brings up a blank new contact sheet... the number isn't filled out in advance It also doesn't list numbers, names, etc if I am receiving a call... the phone just displays the (adorable) green guy - no name, no pic, even though these people are saved in my contacts. Does anybody else have this issue or know what might be causing it? I'm hopeful that I'm foolishly ignoring some setting..

I know you can do it online, but that lapses in a few months, blacklist with Handcent just hides the message.
Is there a way in the OS to really block a caller/sms. I already have sent to VM but what I'd really like is a big go fuck yourself to be sent back to them.
Google Voice would work if it would actually control my other number and not just theirs.
Any ideas/suggests?

How to either replace the in call screen or put something on top of it....the only solution I have found thus far is to make my own ROM, which doesn't make sense for such a small portion of an OS. however I found these two apps (Full Screen Caller Pictures and Full Screen Caller ID) that are able to put a contact image and button on top of the standard in call screen.

I felt that the storm and storm 2 were lacking in this department also. We have such a fantastic, high quality screen. I would love to see a full screen caller ID picture when someone calls, not the tiny square.

Since I loaded the OTA update on my Eris I've had pretty much all the known issues, including silent bug. I did a hard reset this morning (knowing well from too much reading that I'll probably still need a new handset because it won't fix the silent bug) but I totally thought it would fix the issue of my contact id photos appearing super grainy when I make or receive a call. Minor issue, yes. But totally annoying when this didn't happen EVER before the update. Anyone know a fix? I couldn't find any answers by searching. Most of my contact pictures are from Facebook.
