Aug 31, 2009I'm trying to run a background task which runs every minute or so for an android application but I am struggling to ensure that the task actually runs every minute. I've tried a variety of approaches from using SystemClock.sleep() to the AlarmManager (both repeating alarm and a fixed alarm) but it seems that unless the device is charging any kind of repeating system has a variable repeat rate once the device is unplugged. Is there any way to run a stable consistently repeating service?

Jan 23, 2009Is it possible to build a GridView object in XML with 3 columns and 4 rows of Image buttons? It doesn't seem to have similar containment relationship like LinearLayout or RelativeLayout viewgroups.
I want to do this entirely in an xml layout file. When I put ImageButton xml tags inside a GridView xml body, The layout panel in eclipse is throwing an exception: UnsupportedOperationException:addView(View, LayoutParams) is not supported in AdapterView.

It compiles and runs without errors, but the background is black. Here is the main.xml file:

This behavior occurs on both the emulator and on hardware -- an Atmel AT91SAM9M10-G45-EK. The SDK version is 2.0.1.

Feb 10, 2010I have a vertical LinearLayout. I would like to layout 1 ImageView on top and 1 ImageView at the bottom of that LinearLayout. I tried putting 'android:gravity="top"' and 'android:gravity="bottom"' in each of the ImageView, but both ImageView appears at the top of the LinearLayout. Is there a way to fix it?

Aug 13, 2010I'm battling with extending a TextView for my Android app. I'd like to create "bubbles" to display text messages in a conversation, similar to the native iPhone SMS conversations.
Is there a way to implement the resizing of a background image without just stretching it? I'd like to have a single background image that keeps it's corners but get stretched only in defined areas. I think this should be possible because I've seen it in a SMS app, but I wonder how to implement that.

Jan 28, 2013I had the HTC Desire Z, so, I think it's not related to Droid 4, but it's Android specific.
However, whenever I try to set a background image, this one is always enlarged, coming out the edges, no matter what its size is, while I expect it to fit the display, even deformed, just as when I set a desktop image on my PC. That's what happened for example with my old Nokia N82: the image was scaled to fit the display.
I even tried to set an image of the exact resolution of the display (540 x 960), but it was always enlarged. So, is actually there a way to put a background image so that if fits the display and is not enlarged?

How can I do this? The absolute-layout is deprecated. If I use relative layout, I can use margins, but the positions differ from device to device.
