Android :: A Good Idea For Collaborative Code Development
Nov 24, 2009
You know how google docs can allow you to share a doc to be edited real time just like a wave or anything else can?I think that idea should be extended to the code creation process so that coding can be done on the cloud as well. This way, depending on a system like mercurial to do a complex set of updates wouldn't be near as much because if two users were to edit the same document at the same time there would be only one submission.it would work just like this for 2+ workers on any single document! I think it's a great idea!

After publishing a free app to Android Market I have received numerous solicitations from 3rd party app stores to publish my app such as handster.com and mobango.com. To date, I have not pursued that and my app is only available on Android Market.
I would love to hear some developer opinions about this: Is it better to stick to Android Market only, or does it make sense to publish your free apps in as many stores as you can? What do you think are the pros and cons to each approach?

I was going to try a new ROM today, but since my last 2.2 update returned an "error" about not having an app2sd partition (and my SD card is getting somewhat "junky" anyway), I was thinking of just wiping the entire contents and reformatting prior to flashing.I made a mirror copy of my current SD contents to my computer (just in case), but I'm not sure if reformatting the SD is a bad idea.I'm also not sure at which point during the entire re-flashing process I should perform the reformat. Can anyone shed their opinion on if and when to do something like this?

I'm interested in developing android applications. I've a background of Java/Swing/C++/ajax developer so I think I may find myself at home. As I installed the SDK I noticed that I can't follow my usual java development scheme: building base libraries, then the final app. In fact I'd like to develop libs and test them in a more convenient environment like, Swing. There is no way I can use android libs in pure swing apps. Do you have any suggestion about these topics and what's your development process?

We are developing an app off-shore and i want to make sure that we get the source code at the end of the project (i am not expert, regarding programming). We receive builds from the developer - would we be able to take those builds to another developer and he would easily be able to continue programming on the same builds?

My open source Android application has internationalization done the Android way, with strings.xml files.
The community has many people from many countries, and they are willing to contribute/improve translations using a collaborative website.
There is Launchpad but it only supports the gettext format so we would have to use scripts, not very convenient.
There is Crowdin but somehow this website seems dead, nearly no projects, and the download links do not work. Actually we started using Crowdin but all download links fail to give any strings.xml file back, see here.
What website is convenient for translating open source Android applications?

I can't find the source code for the Android Development Tools Plugin for Eclipse. It seems to have been moved a few times, and when I google the question, the answers point to the wrong places. Also http://source.android.com/discuss seems to be down.

My idea is for an application that stores information and reviews about a specific location and presents this information to user.I have gone through all the tutorials and have been reading up on anything and everything about android. Now I am ready to challenge myself with my first app.

If I publish a paid application with very good idea and concept. And realize later that someone already publish an app with this idea. What will happen?I understand that this may be difficult to answer.Perhaps I'm not posting this seeking for absolute answer, but for recommendations or a place where I can find more information and learn more about this kind of stuff.

I went to the Dave Matthews Band concert in Columbus Tuesday night, and it got me thinking up some really cool app ideas.the first one would actually be possible: I was in dire need of another beer but my friends and I were in the middle of a very large crowd on the floor area, and I was worried I wouldn't be able to find them again. What if there was an app to save a group members cell number and locate them by gps on your return trip? they would probably have to enable location on their phone. you could have a couple dots much like google maps that show each of your locations.the other one is impossible most likely but it would be awesome. an app that tells you which beer/food line is the shortest, the prices, and its location.any devices out there wanna take on that first app idea?

I would like to ask since the one thing I am not to fond of about this phone is a lack of a notification LED if someone could make an app that would light up the bottom rows of soft keys to replace the LED missing?
I was sitting here thinking of an idea that would give some sort of indication that there was some sort of notification that needed my attention. Is this even possible? I know the screen and those buttons are lit by different means.
I think it's a good idea as that is my only beef with this phone.

I've come up with an idea for a battery status indicator application. On my old Windows Mobile phone I had an application(abcPowerMeter) which could show the current power consumption of the phone. Like this: If we can get this on the Galaxy, then it can be coupled with the existing battery status information to give a pretty good estimate of how long the battery is going to last under current load.Instead of showing a notoriously unreliable and counterintuitive green bar the phone would show something like this in the tray.

To get the most out of your Incredible's battery, you have to bump charge. To bump charge (I think) you charge your battery until the light turns green, then turn your phone off, and wait until the light turns green again. I think this is a hassle, especially when I want my phone ready to go when I wake up (and I don't have time to bump charge).I was thinking that an app could be made to automatically bump charge the phone. All the app would do is turn the phone off once the battery initially charges to 100%, so the phone would keep charging once off, and get a real 100% charge.I am not sure if an app like this could be made, but it would be useful! The only problem I see is: after bump charging does your phone loose charge for every second it is plugged in, or does it stay at the true 100% until it is unplugged? If it loses charge while plugged in after bump charging, then this wouldn't work.

I have a friend that sent me this message today, which sounds like a great idea:
I've been messing with setcpu and trying out some underclocking profiles. Underclocking while the screen is off as well as reducing the CPU power has gotten me 75% battery left after 8 hours. This is with constant emails but no wireless, bluetooth, or gps. This is better than I was getting under windows mobile.

There is an app in the market which is written just for the Moment that uses the camera flash as a flashlight -- essentially it turns on the camera flash. The application says not to use the flash "too long" or damage may occur, but the "too long" time period is not defined. First, will having the flash on for an period of time damage it? Second, if so, any idea what maximum period of time would be "safe?"
