Motorola Droid :: Is It Ever A Good Idea To Wipe SD
Jun 12, 2010
I was going to try a new ROM today, but since my last 2.2 update returned an "error" about not having an app2sd partition (and my SD card is getting somewhat "junky" anyway), I was thinking of just wiping the entire contents and reformatting prior to flashing.I made a mirror copy of my current SD contents to my computer (just in case), but I'm not sure if reformatting the SD is a bad idea.I'm also not sure at which point during the entire re-flashing process I should perform the reformat. Can anyone shed their opinion on if and when to do something like this?

Is it a good idea to put antivirus software app on your phone, or is it just a waste of time?

You know how google docs can allow you to share a doc to be edited real time just like a wave or anything else can?I think that idea should be extended to the code creation process so that coding can be done on the cloud as well. This way, depending on a system like mercurial to do a complex set of updates wouldn't be near as much because if two users were to edit the same document at the same time there would be only one submission.it would work just like this for 2+ workers on any single document! I think it's a great idea!

After publishing a free app to Android Market I have received numerous solicitations from 3rd party app stores to publish my app such as handster.com and mobango.com. To date, I have not pursued that and my app is only available on Android Market.
I would love to hear some developer opinions about this: Is it better to stick to Android Market only, or does it make sense to publish your free apps in as many stores as you can? What do you think are the pros and cons to each approach?

Every 6 - 12 months,I wipe my Windows laptop and start again, because uninstalling programs always leaves traces behind and eventually lots of stuff is left behind. My question is,would it be a good idea to do the same with my Android handset?I've noticed that sometimes an app will remember its previous settings if its uninstalled and reinstalled later.Does this mean loose files and settings are being missed? Does anyone else already do this?

I'm unrooted and just running Launcher Pro Plus. Is there any benefit to wiping phone before getting the 2.2 OTA update? It's really annoying to have to re setup everything you know? Just wondering.

When using rom manager when do you need to wipe and when don't you? So far, I have wiped data anytime I switch to a different rom. I am currently using Ultimate Droid. If I want to try some of the things offered in the ultimate droid customizer, do I need to wipe when changing any of those? Or how about cyanogenmod? I have a nandroid backup of 5.0.5.3. Can I restore that version (with a wipe of course), update to .4 (without a wipe because I have all my apps loaded and settings set the way I want), then try some of the kernals without wiping? Basically, with all the combinations, what are some examples of when you would and wouldn't wipe data?

Often when typing I'll type "i" and it doesn't autocorrect to "I," and there's no option to specify capitalization. Also, it won't autocorrect "Im" or "im" to "I'm" AT ALL. How do I fix this? As many times as I click "I'm" in the autocorrect bar it does not save.

How do I wipe my phone? I just got my replacement today and I want to wipe the defective unit before I return it. Can I wipe the SD card at the same time? I also just noticed that while Backup Assistant synced my contacts names, it did not sync anything else. So I just have a lot of empty contacts. Well the phone I'm returning can't access the network now so I won't be able to sync anyways. Is there a way to grab the contacts folder from the phone and place it into my new one?

I am running Lithium with the Alternate Black Theme right now. I want to stick with Lithium but I want to try a different theme. Would it be easier to just download the theme and install over it or would it be okay to install a whole new ROM through ROM Manager?

I'm considering installing a rom and I've heard that doing a data and cache wipe is the proper thing to do to ensure success. What I'm concerned about is how easy it is to restore/re-do all of your settings like ringtones, notification settings, app settings etc. How long does it usually take you to set up your phone again after installing the new rom?

If you do not root, you could go from 2.0.1 to 2.1 with no wiping of data and cache, it just installs & away you go. Same with 2.1 to 2.2. No wiping of data and cache and all is still there as you left it: apps, settings, preferences, etc. SO, why is it important to do this if you root? What's the difference? And, who said it was important to do? Is there some exact proven logic on why if your rooted you must do this and if not, your somehow fine? That 1 step difference causes a lot of extra work, so I am wondering why this is said to be a must for rooters and non rooters need not do it when they get updates?

After I received the OTA to 2.1 I have noticed more lag when scrolling between home screens, using 2D games is painful with the framerate reduction, and many items that are running in the background without me ever starting them. I also cannot seem to keep them closed either. I can also say that I am getting worse battery life now than I was with 2.0.1. I was wondering what would actually happen if I rebooted into Recovery Mode and did a Factory Reset with Data Wipe. Would this possibly help with the update causing these problems that were not there before?

Rooted tonight, and playing with ROM Manager and Bugless Beast V0.4 (Froyo). I'm wondering when installing a ROM using RM, it asks if you want to do a backup and wipe before installing. I have already done a backup and don't really want to start over with a completely blank slate once Bugless is installed. Is it possible to just install a ROM without doing a wipe first? If possible, should it still be avoided to prevent issues? Basically just wondering if a full wipe is needed/recommended before installing a new ROM.

I did a quick search but can't find the answer. I did a factory reset and my dumb azz forgot to delete the SD card first. Does the reset wipe it also? I am going to sell my droid since I have a droid X. Sorry for a stupid question it its been posted.

i noticed that the majority of ROMs (if not all of them) require you to wipe system/data/cache before you install. my understanding is that doing this will basically reset your phone back to what it was when you first got it. i want to install a ROM, but really don't want to have to go and install all my apps again and fix all the settings for each etc. i noticed in Titanium Backup that you can backup apps, system or both. if i were to back up both and then install the ROM, when the phone rebooted, could i just install Titanium Backup and restore apps and system? would return my phone to how it was before i wiped? if this is false, are there any other ways to facilitate the restoring of stuff after wipe?

I called up service just now and looks like I have a dead pixel that a battery pull didn't make go away. I am annoyed now because I will have to do what they called a master wipe or something and all the customizing I have done will be gone. I don't even know what I am doing but I will just go to the store by work to have them walk me through it.Is there anything I need to know about a master wipe and keeping all my stuff intact?
Is there something that wrapsol will do now that my nicely protected and wrapped phone is going back to the verizon God's?I also told them about the 2 times in the last week the phone went to sleep/blacked the screen while scrolling through the home pages without hitting a button or anything and they said neither the pixel or the phone going blank are known issues

I have been trying to get more information on what Android 2.0's capabilities are around its ability to sync with Exchange. My company requires PIN locking and remote wipe in order to sync, but it seems nearly impossible to find out of this is a supported feature within 2.0. Has anyone tried this with a similar set of Exchange policies that may have tested 2.0 or the Droid itself?

I am confused about the whole wiping the cache and data. I don't know exactly what cache and data are and that's why I'm confused. Do u have to wipe all data and cache before u switch Roms, if not what happens? I am afraid of losing all of my apps and contacts even tho my gmail will restore my contacts how do I know if it has the contacts saved and how would I get my apps back? One more thing, do u have to make more than one backup if u already have one that u r happy with?
