Sprint HTC Hero :: GPS NOT Turning Off
Dec 12, 2009
I've been through a few Hero's for a couple of different reasons, and I keep running into this same problem. The issue is as I'm using an application other than google maps, the gps receiver continues to search and flash active after exiting the application. The only way that I can seem to get it do deactivate is go into the google maps app and then exit. This happens when I use ANY app that utilizes location aside from google maps.

I'm about to go to Mexico and I don't want my data on while on the ship(cruise). Is there a way to turn off all data so that emails & things don't come thru, only calls & text (I know my bb had this capability)

I found a few threads about this in the European HTC Hero section.I also saw someone posted the question in Sprint's thread, however I can't find it through the search function.Does anyone know of an app or any way to turn the screen off while making a call.I know it automatically times out and turns the screen off, but I have hit the end call button too many times now.Hopefully there is a fix out or in the works for this.

So I have a Sprint HTC HERO. Everytime my gps starts my phone reboots. I have tried everything to fix except complete re-install of OS (android 2.1).
Any Ideas before I spike this thing like an aborted fetus and paint the wall with my brain matter? Goodbye cruel world...

I just switched from the pre and am loving it. One problem: I installed a market app for messages and now I get TWO notifications for each text. I cannot find a way to "turn off" the stock app. Ideas?

My phone keeps turning on in my pocket and dialing numbers without me knowing. I tried the lock screen and ended up locking my phone out due to too many tries in my pocket and ending up having to reset my phone to use again. Even with the lock screen on, the menu button still turn the phone on.

Does anyone else find it annoying when your in a meeting or lecture or church and someone tries to turn down the volume on their phone, only to have the phone beep with every change in volume? Is there any way to turn off this volume response when using the volume controls on the side of the Sprint Hero? Likewise, any way to turn off the sound when turning the phone on/off?

I just updated my Hero today and now I am trying add back all that I had prior to update. My question is how do I use the handscent message without the stock message popping up. I only want to use the handscent message not the messaging system that comes with the phone.

I've never had "bad" battery life but have always felt that the battery does die pretty quick. I'm text up to 100 texts a day tops, pretty heavy internet (checking work emails all day), a few phone calls here and there. Maybe some music here and there, nothing to justify the less than desirable battery life. Spare parts never showed anything out of line either. Rooting was something I had no desire to do (I tried it and found it useless for me). Like a few others, I'm patiently waiting for *whispers* THE UPDATE. Anyways I turned off Sense the other day and DRASTICALLY improved my battery life. Sense ON- wifi off, gps off, location off, mobile internet off. pretty much EVERYTHING off. By 1pm my battery was usually 50-60%. By 10pm my battery was dead. Sense OFF - wifi on and mobile internet on ALL DAY. Now by 5pm my battery is usually around 70%. Running music/HEAVY internet for the rest of the night leaves my battery at 35% by night end.

My native music player has started turning itself on at different times. I will get a triangle in my notification bar, open it and the music player is running and listed as ongoing. There is no stop button, only pause, and apparently backing out of the app does not turn it off. Should I look into a task killer for this?

I've had 4-5 apps so far do this to me, and every once in a while another app does the same - instead of displaying its proper name, like ChompSMS or wpToGo, the name would switch to the Java version, such as com.p1.chompsms or com.roundhill.androidWP.wpAndroid.
The name change occurs globally - in the app list, widget names, even the displayed name when I start the app. The only place where the names stay OK is the Market.
These changes don't happen after an update - just randomly but once they happen, they stay.
Some other apps include VoiceCallerID and Mystique Chapter 1.
WTF is going on with my phone?

I see another thread on Locale, but it seems to be focused on it technical shortcomings. I thought a thread about how people are using this app would be helpful.
Now... I use Locale for the following:
- Turning the ringer down when I get to work (obviouse one)
- Turning GPS/Bluetooth/wifi on when I plug it in the phone (think car dock)
- Turn on Wifi when I get near my known hot spots.
- Turn off GPS/Bluetooth/wifi off and turn down brightness when my battery is low.
And the last one is a good one for me...
- I have a GV number. When I call my phone from that number, it turns the ringer volume all the way up and it turns on wifi and GPS. This is my "lost phone aid". It turns on the locating features so I can see where the phone is using iGoogle and Latitude, and I can hear the phone if it is "in the cushions" on vibrate.
Anyone else get creative with Locale?

When I trun my phone on, the scene changes from the scene I had chosen (the waving grass) to "current (unsaved)".If I change it to the one I prefer (saved with my name) I am asked to "save or cancel" the incorrect one.I click cancel, and all is well. But why does it change and how do I keep the scene selected that I want?I just want it to stick on the scene that I have chosen.

My main gripe, is that the display turns off during a call. My instinct has already been to push the On/Off button to turn the display back on, but this also hangs up the call.I also find it VERY cumbersome that by default the numeric keypad is not there, a ALOT of calls are "push 1.. push 2 " type automated calls.

does this put the phone in silent mode whatever you are doing or does it only silent an incoming call? For me its hit and miss.it will ring/vibrate upside down, so then i have to turn it the right way and then turn it back upside down for it to go silent.this would have been ideal for me when in meetings, but if it only works if you turn it upside down when you get a call its not as useful.

At first my Hero was lagging a bit on turning caps off when texting so my first two letters would always be caps. but now i have to manually turn it off every time or the whole message will be in caps. it NEVER turns off automatically.I'm using the phone keypad setting BTW. when i turn it sideways the keypad doesn't have capitalization problems but sometimes it doesn't show what I'm typing and i have to get outta the keyboard to see it. besides those two problems my phone is fine. i can accept the not being able to see the message as I'm typing as lagging but the auto-caps has to be a setting right?

it's easy enough to turn on the unlock pattern security feature and it was fun to give it a try but now I'm just wondering - is there any way to turn it off?? I've tried searching and even in the user guide it says nothing about being able to disable it. If anyone knows how to do this/whether it is possible please let me know - only because I'm finding it kind of annoying now!

When I first plugged in my ear phones into my first Hero phone after a while (5 min) the songs shuttled and turned itself off. I tried to listen to some music again but the phone didn?t recognise that the ear phones were plugged in after that. I sent that phone back and got a new phone. I was going to wait until 2.1 OS came out but when I heard that it wasn?t coming out till March I thought I might try this new phone out been as though I have had it for a couple of months without listening to any music (expected the same though). And the same happen again. It sounds like its the 1.5 OS or the ROM not updated yet because I had already set up all the phone before I realised I had to do this. So thats why I decided to wait until 2.1 and get it all over with and hope it solves the problem.

I've just discovered there is a widget for turning mobile network on and off which is fantastic as I've been looking for one in the market, cos I'm sick of doing it the long winded way. The only thing is, it doesn't work..... If you long press the home screen its under htc widgets, then settings. Has anyone else got one and does it work for them?

after installing 2.2 on my hero, everything was working fine, until now. im having problems with my text messages, they wont send under sprints network, if i put it in roaming then they send right away, but roaming has awefully slow (1x) network speeds, but if i put it back to the 3g network speeds of sprint then everytime i try to send a text it just swirls in circles (the little thing next to the message) and wont send. is this sprints network being down? or does this have to do with the 2.2 update?i dont think its sprint because my mom and sister arent having any problems with there phones from the same plan. but i tryed restarting many times, taking out and leaving out the battery, putting it in airplane mode and turning that back off to reset connection, iv tryed everything and cant get it to work, so idk what to do, and i dont understand why if it was a software problem with the 2.2 installation, why would they send in roaming but not on sprints network?
