Samsung Galaxy S :: How To Filter To Show Google "My Contacts" Group?
Jul 2, 2010
Having had the Nexus one with glorious Stock Android I'm struggling with some of the Samsung 'improvements'. The primary issue for me right now is that I've got the nasty Sammy Contacts app (with it's non-maintained-aspect-ration contact pics, i HATE that) sync to Google Contacts, but it shows them all! On the N1 I could filter so that I could only view 'My Contacts' from Google, a nice limited Group I could readily maintain. I can see no option to do this on the SGS. Anyone found it? Can't wait for a stock android ROM for this beast, it is awesome but as of yet I can't see how Samsung added any value with their SW meddling.

I'm developing a big application and a part of it is about contacts. I want to, first, get all the groups of contacts. And when the users selects one, show all the contacts of the group.
I've seen other applications and widgets (like LauncherPro widget or HTC Sense Widget) than can do it, but when I try, I don't get same results.
My code is:
1.- To get an example group (this is just for testing, in real application user selects):
Code:
long idGroup = 0;
String[] GROUP_PROJECTION = new String[] {
ContactsContract.Groups._ID, ContactsContract.Groups.TITLE };
Cursor c = mcp.getContext().getContentResolver().query(ContactsContract.Groups.CONTENT_URI, GROUP_PROJECTION, null, null, ContactsContract.Groups.TITLE + " ASC");
[Code]...
2.- To filter Users by group??

I have two accounts, exchange and gmail.All the contacts I care about are in gmail.I also set up my exchange to sync contacts.900 of my contacts are now in the 'corporate' group in contacts on my Galaxy.This means changing those doesn't sync to google.com/contacts and vice versa
question 1: Any way to move all those contacts over to gmail group so they sync?
question 2: Any ideas how this happened?

In Google Contacts I've entered birthdays and subscribed to the "Contacts' birthdays and events" calendar in Google Calendar.They show up as intended in Google Calendar but in my phones calendar they're all listed twice. Unsubscribing from the contacts birthdays calendar makes both disappear, so they're not from some other calendar.Is this a bug in the Galaxy S calendar? Any solutions?

I have configured my Samsung Galaxy S using my normal Gmail account. This has helped me to sync the Google Contacts with my phone.
Following are my questions:
1. Right now I have about a thousand google contacts synced to my phone. I want to remove them at one go. I know how to disable them from being appearing in contact list, but I want to know if I can delete them without going to factory settings.
2. I am using three applications (a) Gmail (b) Contacts (3) MVOIP. I want to know if there is a way that following combination works:
a- Google contacts appear on Gmail app
b- Google contacts (with phone numbers) and normal phone contacts appear on "Contacts"
c- Google contacts (with phone numbers) and normal phone contacts appear on "MVOIP application".
I know how to do
(a) - By synchronising google contacts,
(b) - by choosing display options
(c) - I do not know how to handle this and I want help.

Still new (< 2 full days) to Vibrant and Android, so I'm not sure if this should go here or in an android forum, but here it goes:
A friend recommended I download Handcent SMS, but I've found I like the built in Messenger a little better... with one caveat. Is there a way to filter the contact list to just contacts on the phone or at least contacts with numbers? It currently includes every single person on Facebook as well as apparently every person I have ever e-mailed with gmail over the last 6 years.

I have them filtered on the Handset so that only those marked as Friends or Family under Gmail contacts are shown. I can't help this as otherwise I'd have well over 1000 contacts to scroll through on my phone.
My issue is that should I add a contact on my phone it doesn't appear. This is obviously because when it's created it has no group membership. It still resolves against SMS etc but is not displayed in the Contacts list. I can (when near a computer) quickly jump onto gmail, manage contacts and put the person into the right group but ideally I'd like to be able to do this on the handset.
Is there any way at all of editing Google Contact Group membership on the handset? I certainly can't find the option if it exists. Alternatively is it possible to change it so when the contact is create on the handset that it automatically saves as a 'Friend'.

I have several contact groups setup in google Voice/Gmail. I cannot seem to access/send to these groups via my Droid Gmail/Voice application. Handcent is the only application I have that seems to be able to send a single message to one of my google groups. Anyone have an idea on how I can send an email to a group via google?

Is there a way i can group all my contacts to my Google account that are saved to phone. I start saving them to phone instead of Google when giving the option, thinking i could just sync whenever i upgraded ROMS. I was wrong i lost some contacts, restoring older ROMS. So for future references I will save to google, I just want to know if the current contacts now can be saved to Google grouped or i have to go in and do them individually.

I recently upgraded to a Samsung Galaxy S3, and I am a little confused on how information for contacts is organized.
I saved all my contacts info on Google, so when I added my Google account to this photo, everything downloaded and synced up. Seems okay.
Because I find the Facebook app calendar syncing feature to be less than adequate (for example, I like having higher resolution pictures display on this large screen) I downloaded a third-party Facebook contacts sync app. Works great.
Now, I have several contacts that are both Google and Facebook contacts. At least one of my Google contacts has a Google picture that that person has uploaded which is different from their Facebook picture that is syncing tocmy phone. Do I have the option to select which picture displays? I thought that selecting default information for the contact would work, but I don't seem to have that option there.
I guess another way of asking this question is how Android decides which picture to display when there are both Google profile pictures and Facebook picture synced on a phone. SCH-I535

I'm sure this first question has been answered, but I haven't been able to find it. I have a Vibrant and a Mac Book with OS 10.6.4. When I plug in my phone and mount the SD card, nothing happens. I've learned elsewhere that this seems to be a problem with this phone and Macs and I've enabled USB debugging. That works, but for me it is not a proper workaround. Has this problem been fixed? Is there some update for either my phone or my computer I can install that would make it work like it should? Also, a question about my contacts. Like most, Gmail saves every person I email in my contacts. This is fine because on Gmail.com they're separated into "my contacts" and "other contacts". On my G1 I was able to only have "my contacts" in my contacts, but on my Vibrant it just threw everyone in there. I was able to get around it by saying only show contacts with numbers, but that's not exactly what I want either. Is there a way to tell the vibrant to only show certain groups of your google contacts?

I am new to the captivate. I have all my contacts in my phone now, about 300. Is there a way to either group or create groups of them and then set one of those groups up as the contact default? I know some phonebook apps probably do this but are limited in their information. I am looking for the full contact info (with phone numbers) and then isolate those I use frequently into such a group.

I am in UK on Vodafone and it only allows me to send to a group of 10 people, it stops at ten. I have tried a couple of free SMS tools from Android but they also stop at 1- in the group. Does anyone know of a group sms app that will allow it to send to about 40 people in one go?

My application wants a functionality of picking a contact from the phone contact, I have achieved this using the following intent Intent intent = new Intent(Intent.ACTION_PICK, People.CONTENT_URI); startActivity ForResult(intent, 001); I wanted few more functionalities
- An option to create a new contact from the pick list, similar to the one which is available in inbuilt Launcher appliation
- Set of contacts should be filtered from display i.e already selected contacts should not be displayed
- Filtering of contacts should be based on the phone number i.e a contact might have two phone numbers associated with and wants to filter out the phone number which is selected I guess above can be achieved by implementing my own pick list using contacts provider, is there any other way without implementing the new pick list

I have looked at the intent-filter documentation and I can't figure out this specific intent-filter. I'm looking to use ACTION_SEND because I only want the app to show up in "Share" menus in other apps. I only want to show up in the share menu if the text of the intent is a url. For example, what is shared from the Android Browser's share menu. I don't want the app to appear in the share menu if it's just text and not a url.

I have a Cursor that returns rows I use with a SimpleCursorAdapter to populate a ListView. I would like to filter some of the rows so they don't get displayed in my ListView. I use the data from the rows elsewhere in my Activity so I don't want to change my SQL to filter them with a WHERE clause. What is the best way to keep a row from being displaying in my ListView? Ideally I would check a column in my row and then only add rows to the ListView that satisfy a condition.

I try to make "type-to" filter in the my dialer. When I tap a digit, there must be a list (ListView) of supposed contacts (all of them have a number containing a part from my dialer TextView). For example, if I tap 555, there must be presented contacts with such numbers:
555890856
555789734
895550123
1st attempt:
Code:
String phoneNumberPart = //this is the part of phone number. Only part!
final Uri baseUri = ContactsContract.Contacts.CONTENT_FILTER_URI;
final Uri uri = Uri.withAppendedPath(baseUri, Uri.encode(phoneNumberPart));
final String[] projection = CONTACTS_PROJECTION; //_ID, DISPLAY_NAME, LOOKUP_KEY
Cursor cursor = getContentResolver().query(uri, projection, null, null, null);
2nd attempt:
Code:
String phoneNumberPart = //this is the part of phone number. Only part!
final Uri baseUri = ContactsContract.PhoneLookup.CONTENT_FILTER_URI;
final Uri uri = Uri.withAppendedPath(baseUri, phoneNumberPart);
final String[] projection = CONTACTS_PROJECTION; //_ID, DISPLAY_NAME, LOOKUP_KEY
Cursor cursor = getContentResolver().query(uri, projection, null, null, null);
In both attempts cursor count is always 0, despite I dial the phone number of real contact.
Is it possible to filter contacts by this criteria, using Android uris? Or there is no way but "get all contacts, iterate over them and check their numbers"?

New forums user here. Had my i9000 for about 2 weeks now and still trying to work out a few very small things to make my phones exactly the way I want it. One thing that has escaped me thus far despite all my googling and digging through menus and options in the phone is a way to display the full titles of programs. Ie: I'm running Opera Mini and the icon in the applications menu and on my home screen says "Opera Min" and then the text fades off. I would like it to just say "Opera Mini." Eight characters(ish) for a filename is so Windows 3.1, I would think there would be a way to have the full name displayed.

I have read some about how to move "Phone" stored contacts to Google. They all seem to revolve around exporting all the contacts to the SD card and then importing them again into Google.
The question I have is, what about all the extraneous contacts, say from facebook, LinkedIn, Google+, etc? Do those also get exported and then imported into Google essentially creating a duplicate contact for each contact that is sync'ed from those other services?
What I want to do is just take the few contacts I have run across that are "Phone" contacts and move them to Google. Basically, I don't want ANY phone contacts. Only Google contacts which I can then join to LinkedIn and facebook contacts.
Does that make sense? I just don't want to try this export/import and end up with a ton of duplicate contacts and be in a worse mess than I have now!
By the way, I am on a Galaxy S3 under Verizon.
