General :: Galaxy S3 - Moving Contacts From Phone To Google
Aug 10, 2012
I have read some about how to move "Phone" stored contacts to Google. They all seem to revolve around exporting all the contacts to the SD card and then importing them again into Google.
The question I have is, what about all the extraneous contacts, say from facebook, LinkedIn, Google+, etc? Do those also get exported and then imported into Google essentially creating a duplicate contact for each contact that is sync'ed from those other services?
What I want to do is just take the few contacts I have run across that are "Phone" contacts and move them to Google. Basically, I don't want ANY phone contacts. Only Google contacts which I can then join to LinkedIn and facebook contacts.
Does that make sense? I just don't want to try this export/import and end up with a ton of duplicate contacts and be in a worse mess than I have now!
By the way, I am on a Galaxy S3 under Verizon.

Any widget that will display a moving google map with my current location centered? There are a couple apps I've found that are close, they just don't update in realtime. The reason I ask is because I have my 7" galaxy tab mounted in my truck. I use a program called torque to add gauge widgets (coolant temp, boost pressure, rpm, etc) to my home screen and would like to have a moving map display as well. I understand this would be a battery hog,but the tablet is always plugged in.

I have two accounts, exchange and gmail. All the contacts I care about are in gmail.I also set up my exchange to sync contacts.900 of my contacts are now in the 'corporate' group in contacts on my Galaxy. This means changing those doesn't sync to google.com/contacts and vice versa
question 1: Any way to move all those contacts over to gmail group so they sync?
question 2: Any ideas how this happened?

I have just bought a Samsung Galaxy S3 - very nice looking device - to replace my old and clunky Sony Ericsson Xperia X10. And I want to transfer all my phone contacts across. On my Xperia, I've got "Phone contacts", and gmail contacts. I tried to import all my phone contacts by first exporting them to a simgle file, and transferring that file to the Samsung. And now I've got this vast list containing, it seems, everybody who I've ever called or emailed, including various names who I don't recognize at all. Is there any way (maybe a specialized app) of keeping my phone contacts and gmail contacts separate? And how do I manage my vast list of contacts?

I recently upgraded to a Samsung Galaxy S3, and I am a little confused on how information for contacts is organized.
I saved all my contacts info on Google, so when I added my Google account to this photo, everything downloaded and synced up. Seems okay.
Because I find the Facebook app calendar syncing feature to be less than adequate (for example, I like having higher resolution pictures display on this large screen) I downloaded a third-party Facebook contacts sync app. Works great.
Now, I have several contacts that are both Google and Facebook contacts. At least one of my Google contacts has a Google picture that that person has uploaded which is different from their Facebook picture that is syncing tocmy phone. Do I have the option to select which picture displays? I thought that selecting default information for the contact would work, but I don't seem to have that option there.
I guess another way of asking this question is how Android decides which picture to display when there are both Google profile pictures and Facebook picture synced on a phone. SCH-I535

I don't want my contacts to be synced with Google. IIRC, this was possible in 2.x. Having upgraded to 4.0.4, I'm not able to disable Google contacts.
I'd like to:
1. Disable contact sync (this works)
2. Change all contacts from Google contacts to phone contacts
3. Add new contacts as phone contacts by default.
Using the "Accounts and Sync" settings, I'm only able to deselect "Sync Contacts", but I can't find a way to move the contacts and disable the creation of new Google contacts.

how google accounts work. I got a phone previously owned by a family member and all his contacts are still in the phone. I was wondering if it is possible to delete all the contacts on the phone but not affect his google account contacts? Also, if i reformat the phone, will this delete all his google contacts?

I have not seen this question asked yet. I would like to move my Gmail contacts to my phone, i.e. to the smartcard, so that if I delete the contacts from Gmail, they are not automatically deleted from the phone (I don't trust my personal info on a public server). Is there any way to do this with retyping?

In Google Contacts I've entered birthdays and subscribed to the "Contacts' birthdays and events" calendar in Google Calendar. They show up as intended in Google Calendar but in my phones calendar they're all listed twice. Unsubscribing from the contacts birthdays calendar makes both disappear, so they're not from some other calendar. Is this a bug in the Galaxy S calendar? Any solutions?

I have a Galaxy s3 and I recently have been saving my contacts to the phone and I just switched it to save to my gmail account(they wont sync over since they were saved directly to the phone). Is there a way to move/link contacts to the gmail account instead of re-typing100 contacts over again and saving them as gmail. Plus I have miles of messages that I need so I can't really delete the contact/have double contacts if you know what I mean.

OK.... let's assume I am not too sharp with tech (I actually typed in id**t but that is offensive? :O ) I'm not stupid, just not as tech savvy as I would like to be... I have the Galaxy Note and have, let's say... an emotional attachment to a particular WhatsApp chat thread I have in my Note.
Bullet points.
I have my chat on the Note with my current phone number, which will be transferred to the new phone tomorrow and a temporary number on my new S4 so am assuming that my old phone will have no number as of tomorrow.
The Note has a faulty USB (it's the phone port not the cable as my new cable doesn't work with it either) so I cannot backup on my PC.
I have installed ES File Explorer on both phones.
I have Whatsapp installed on the old phone, but not the new one yet as I understand you should do that after creating the WhatsApp backup on the new phone.
How do I use ES File Explorer to transfer my (will do backup first, I know how to do that) backed up WhatsApp chat from the Note to the S4? I do NOT wish to root either phone.

I just bought my micro sd card (8g) and I inserted it into my phone. It says its there but I don't know how to transfer my apps or music, videos, extc onto it! I have the Samsung Galaxy Rush. I tried downloading apps to move it but it says there is an option 'move to sd card' and there isn't. Is it not reading the micro sd card right? I tried moving simple apps, messenger, bubble worlds, fruit ninja, whale trails, things like that but all it said was clear cache and no other options. I downloaded a few of these apps to transfer to the sd but they didn't work. I don't really know what to do because it says I have little space but the sd card is in there. It has 7 gigs of space but nothing is on it. How do I transfer my apps?

I like all the functionality Google has to offer with their contacts management. It's nice to know my contacts are backed up on-line so that I they're not lost if I manage to lose my phone. However, I do not want contacts loaded onto my phone that I do not communicate with by cellphone (only e-mail). There's simply no point to it. I do not use a local client e-mail application--only GMail. I'd rather keep my phone contacts list succinct. But I have yet to figure out a way to do this, except by keeping a separate GMail account specifically for managing my phone contacts (I keep only those with phone numbers, and synchronize with that one). I'd rather keep it all unified in one account (both contacts and calendar).

I'm running 4.3 on my AT&T (not sure if that is relevant) Galaxy S3. A few weeks ago I updated it to 4.3 when I saw a message that an update was available.
I keep a lot of work contacts in the phone but over the years I've built a collection of "contacts" that have no first/last name but are simply just a "Company" field with a phone and fax number.
Before 4.3 I could use the keypad in the stock Phone app to spell out company names (e.g. I could pull up the number for "XYZ Widgets, Inc." by typing "XYZ", just like searching for a person's name).
Ever since 4.3 I've been unable to do this. I go into my contacts and they are still shown there. But they do not show up when I'm typing them out. So I have a workaround but it's cumbersome.
Any settings I can change to try to fix this? I took some screen captures of the menu options I have under "call settings" in the Phone app. Link: [URL]

currently I still have got Sony Xperia X8. I know it's a little bit old but still I want to keep it for few months. Now I'm thinking about rooting it and upgrading it to Android 2.2 or 2.3. All the stuff is stored in the phone's memory. I'd like to synchronize my contacts and calendar events to Google - tried few tricks but still without any result.
It looks like it's not possible to sync contacts which weren't stored as Google Contacts. I need to do the same with my calendar events.
I would really like to keep my data stored in the phone's memory as well as on Google. So I'm looking for sync option. If this is not possible then I'll need to get used to store everything just on Google but first I need to import my data there as well.
How do you sync your data or what solution do you use and why?

When I switched to the Samsung Fascinate from a previous non-smart phone, I transferred all of my contacts from the phone over. I think in the setup somewhere I chose to convert my contacts to Google contacts. That was really confusing at first, because I didn't know what it did, and didn't even remember I had done that until recently. I'd like to get the contacts back to phone contacts (not Google contacts) for multiple reasons, which I won't bother listing for now. So, does anyone know how to UN-convert or re-convert Google contacts back into phone contacts? I really don't want to have to recreate all of the phone contacts, because I've got a LOT of them. I would remove my Google account from the phone, but I worry that would remove all of my contacts completely, which wouldn't help me.

I did my update manually earlier today without any problems (all of my contacts were Google).I have a question for my sister's though:How do you convert all of your Phone contacts to Google contacts? I don't want to do the .csv backup and all that just sync all Phone and Google contacts to Google. The reason is because when Verizon transfers your numbers, they get saved as Phone contacts but from what I understand, the update only re-syncs your Google contacts. So is there a quick/easy way to do this? She is not very tech-savvy.I just want to make sure she does this before she upgrades,so she doesn't lose all of her phone numbers.

I've got a Galaxy Nexus phone recently and since I'm not familiar with Android (ICS) at all it took me a while to get used to it.
Since I was not very satisfied with the pre-installed googleCalendar I was told to install the app aCalendar, which I was very happy with for a while. But whenever there was an Calendar alarm which I wanted to change the note opened in the old googleCalendar. And that's why I thought I might change that by disabling the googleCalendar. Yes, what I did not know at that time was that the aCalendar depends on the googleCalendar. Afterwards I couldn't make any entries to the aCalendar anymore. So I went back to the apps-list and to my horror there was no appropriate button for enabling the calendar again (why not???). In despair I went to Settings and Reset app preferences, which seemed to work for a while - the old Calendar worked again.
A couple of days later, however (I don't have the slightest clue whether it had anything to do with my former actions or with anything else) it stopped working again and I didn't find any possibility to start it again - which is EXTREMELY FRUSTRATING, since I need a calendar!
HOW do I start the googleCalendar again??? If I go the app in the app-list it obviously still exists, but there is NO button to make it start again! (Why do they put an DISABLE-button there, if they don't give you the option to ENABLE it again!?)
I have a file manager installed and I see that the calendar app is stored in /system/app (actually there are two calendar files - CalendarGoogle.apk & CalendarProvider.apk). When I try to say install, it won't install and says App not installed. ?
Don't come up with things like "You have to root your mobile", because this is no option for me and I don't want to mess up with the system even more).
