Samsung Captivate :: Possible To Lower Strength Of Vibration?
Jul 21, 2010
When I put my phone on vibrate it is to avoid annoying other people. But I feel that the vibration strength on most phones is too high, and although I won't be receiving my Captivate until Friday, I'd like to know if there is an option to do this, with or without root.

Noticed since I work in a rather quiet environment. During office hours I need to keep it on vibrate mode. When the phone vibrates during a call, it causes a severe rattling noise when the phone is in my hands or if the bottom is not resting against a hard object. Removing the battery compartment cover and repeat, and the rattle is non existent. With the battery cover on, the rattle can be diminished by pressing firmly on the top section of the cover.

This past weekend I was cleaning something with chlorine and accidentally let a big drop of it land in the middle of the phone screen. Long story short, I could not see to it until I was done with my cleaning project. By then the splash on the screen dried up and became whitish. I tried to rub it off, it was leaving residue, so I used 90% alcohol to clean the screen. The screen came out spotless, but now I feel it is getting more fingerprints than usual and they no longer come off after a quick easy wipe with my shirt sleeve - they require some rigorous rubbing now. Did I destroy the oleophobic coating?

I couldn't help but notice that the signal strength of my new Captivate was kinda weak. Holding it side by side to my brother's iPhone 4 I had three bars (usually 2), while my brother has a full five bars. I know it can be any number of things, but I feel that it's probably something like the GPS, where it needs some sort of fix.I was just wondering if anyone had a similar problem, or have any ideas of how to fix it.

I just traded in my Captivate earlier today, and maybe its my imagination, but I think my signal strength is weaker than the last phone. Maybe It just needs to warm up, or maybe I've elevated the last phone in my memory, but I seem to be getting less bars, even in open areas.

OMG, this thing freaking vibrates rough! I don't care, except that when I'm on the phone and get a notification, I can't hear the person talking because of the vibration. Any way to turn the intensity down?

Well the vibration that my phone is on right now is kind of bad so I decided that I wanted to change it, but I couldn't change the level of the Vibration Intensity because its grayed out for some reason. Grayed out meaning that it's un clickable. Any way to fix this? I'm pretty sure that I'm going to end up looking stupid.

Does anyone know if it's possible to disable the vibration feedback from the Samsung keyboard? Disabling haptic feedback works, but that effects the entire phone (i.e. long presses and home keys).

I got my phone on Monday and I've noticed that when somebody is talking to me on the phone it causes a vibration type noise. I've tried lowering the volume but it still seems to be doing it. Not to mention, even with the audio turned all the way up it's hard to hear the people I'm talking to.

Vibrant's screen is just ridiculously bright and sometimes even the minimum brightness is still too much for me. I've noticed that the screen's brightness goes lower than minimum when the battery is at 10% or lower, is there anyway to set the brightness that low manually?

I'm using my SGS to take photos at max resolution (5MB), the average file size is 1.5MB. I want an app that will resize the photo to a lower resolution (640 X 480) so that the file size is small enough to send it easily through email (over GPRS conn). Can someone recommend a app that can do this, preferably free? Right now, I transfer the pics to my PC & use Picasa to export the photos with a lower resolution.

Really sorry for all the screenshots. I own a Nexus One and Dell Streak and one thing that I find disappointing is that some apps don't run at the native resolution on the Nexus which makes things look blurry compared to my Streak. Examples: (all screenshots taken with the Android SDK) Now, I understand that the PenTile display will have an effect on image quality Vs my Streak but why does the N1 seem to be rendering things in a lower resolution compared to my Streak?

The left lower side of my battery cover doesn't fully snap into place, causing an annoying gap. It was never like this, but I took the cover off to remove the battery, and when I tried to put it back in, it wouldn't snap. I tried a different cover and it still didn't fit... I have no idea why it wont snap in all of a sudden. Anyone else have this? I'm on my fourth epic, If I have to go to #5 I might just say forget it and save my upgrade

Could any of you please comment on their Wi-Fi signal characteristics? I average "1 bar" unless I am right next to my wireless router, at which point it displays full strength connection Interestingly there is no significant difference when I run a bandwidth speed test (speedtest.net).

I believe there is a bug in the signal strength indication on the Fascinate, the one that shows the signal strength in -dBm. You can see the signal strength of the cell signal on the Menu, Settings, About, Status screen. Or you can place a widget on your Home screen. There are several widgets available, I'm using Mobile Signal Widget.I have a network extender, which basically creates a cell tower right in your home. With my Motorola Droid, I used to get signal strengths down to about -50 something and 60's in indicated signal strength. I can hold both of our Fascinates right next to the network extender's antenna and they will read no better than -86 dBm. So far I've seen signal strengths from -86 dBm to -106 dBm (terrible).I believe there is a bug in the software (Baseband) on the Fascinate. Previously, I thought the hardware (antenna/radio) wasn't very good, but now it may be software related. Has anyone seen a signal strength stronger than -86 dBm on the Fascinate?

So.. I recently left my large metro area.. and traveled to another just as large metro area 2 hours away. Let me tell you how disappointed I was with my signal strength.
I never got above -86dbm.. and that was standing right next to the tower. My phone just peaked at four bars a few times.
I had to *228 once I got to my destination because I had zero service inside.
On the drive home.. it was the same. Signal strength just sucked.
Is this the phone compensating in some way.. or does the reception on this phone suck that much?
In my metro.. I average 1-2 bars.. -106 - -96 dbm

Somehow my vibrations have all gone away. I made sure the vibration effect is set to normal, which it is. It must have been an app I installed that disabled it. Currently using Open Home with Hero skin, weather widgets, and Swype keyboard. Anyone have this issue or is something I can easily fix in the settings?

Like the title says, what is everyone's signal strength (settings/about phone/status) and have you been experiencing any mobile network issues at this level?
My signal hovers between -96 dBm and -101 dBm and have had network problems beyond belief. Moto droid sitting directly beside my fascinate typically is ten points better at -86 dBm through -91 dBm with zero network problems.

I was in a meeting and set the phone to vibration mode via the notification panel. I noticed that the phone will only vibrate if a call comes in, but not SMS. Is this correct? Cause in my previous phone, so long as I am in vibration mode, every event (call, SMS, reminder, email etc) will cause the phone to vibrate.

Is it possible to make the keypad on the phone not vibrate? I have haptic feedback disabled and the only two things that vibrate are the unlock (which I dont mind) and the keypad on the phone. I would really love to turn that off. Does anyone know if this is possible?

So I went to the beach with friends this weekend and had my phone in a ziploc bag along with other items. Well, it seems that one of my friends went into the bag to get something and had their hands completely wet. About one hour later I went to check the time on the phone and there was about two inches of water in it. I immediately removed the battery, SIM card and sd card and left it out to dry.
Got home some time later and did the rice trick and left it there for the entire weekend (just switched its position every 8 hours). Tried to turn it on this morning and it powers up, makes sounds and vibrates but the screen doesn't come on. If I touch the screen in some spots I still get vibration feedback and sounds but nothing else.

I keep my phone near my head on my bed, since I use it as an alarm clock. Unfortunately the Vibrant is vibrating at the end of the charge cycle, which is distracting when I'm trying to fall asleep!
I can't find a setting to turn this off. I have haptic feedback turned off. I keep the phone in vibrate mode (ringer volume = vibrate).
