Samsung Captivate :: Hsupa - Speaker Volume VERY Low?
Jul 20, 2010
I'm really not crazy about this phone after playing with it the other day at the at&t store. The earpiece speaker volume is VERY low. Reception drops like a cinder block, from holding it pretty much anywhere. Its pretty chuggy, and i'm not very confident about support from the community. that being said, there are a lot of nice things about the phone. Howerver, one thing it HAS to have, is HSUPA. I tried to do an upload test, but i couldnt find any sites that worked. And i didnt know if here was an app i could get, plus the market wasnt set up.

I've been pretty vocal about this issue, because it's one that really bothered me. Mainly because the Galaxy S supports HSUPA, and really, any new high end phone should. I suspected AT&T was disabling it on the Captivate, likely to save features like that for the iPhone 4, and it looks like that was right. After a suggestion from trinikartel at XDA (thanks twice for good info that helped figure this out!), I flashed the i9000 JP3 modem firmware to the Captivate, and sure enough, the result was:
I've only been an Android owner for less than two weeks, so it took a little while to figure out at first, haha, but the process is very simple:
1. Download an i9000 firmware, I got the JP3 firmware from Home -. See my note below
2. Extract the firmware and find the modem firmware tar file. I9000XXJP3.tar for JP3, not to be confused with I9000XXJP3.rar which was the whole archive. If you're not sure, open it up, it should have modem.bin in it....................

I'm writing an Android application that plays back voice mails using Media Player, which are just WAV files that have been sent to the device. When I play the file, it's played on the device's speaker, or else it plays through headphones if they're plugged in. What I want to do is play the file so that it sounds to the user as if it's at the same volume level as a normal phone call. Is there a way to route playback so that the file is played through the phone's ear piece instead of out of the speaker?

How exactly is the speaker on the Samsung Captivate? I'm with an iPhone 2G and I think things sound louder with headsphones+max volume than the iPhone's speaker. Like, the only way I can hear a song outloud with a few others is if we're not near anyone or anywhere outside or making any noise. I mean, it's the most fail I've probably seen on phone in terms of a speaker. That being said, I'm hoping the Captivate has a decent speaker?
Also, durability? I've dropped my iPhone 2G at least, with no exaggeration, 30 times, and yeah, it's holding up. Backs filled with more scratches than anything, the bottom plastic is starting to tear up a little, but other than that, it's working and not broken. Will I survive with the Captivate?
I'm going to be trialing the iPhone 4 for a month or so via my dad and his workplace's offer, and yeah, within the next month, I'm going Captivate or i4...Hopefully, works well, since I've only stayed a year with almost all of my phones (except the iPhone 2G, which was three years =0...gotta love that app store). I'm really hoping Samsung comes out with some GPS fix, too, because my directions fail and I'm hoping to substitute my phone for a GPS...I've managed to work with it on the iPhone 2G via cell tower positioning/wi-fi+google maps for now, but yeah, I don't think I'd like a phone that shows me on the wrong street.

No sound from the speaker, just randomly happened. Rebooting doesn't work. I have not rooted the phone.

Has anyone noticed a slight rattle sound at the top of the phone? I first noticed this when the volume was turned up on calls. But tapping on the back near the camera lens also produces the noise. Trying to decide if I need to exchange.

the speaker volume level for my vibrant decreased considerably even though the various volume levels in my settings haven't changed. Music and GPS instructions are barely audible. I am new to Android and hope I may be overlooking something.

I have my headphones plugged in (yes they're plugged all the way in), I get an email/text/gtalk notification. The notification sound comes through both my headphones and the rear speaker. What's up with that, I'd like for all sound to come through the headphones when they're plugged in.

I returned my first captivate due to annoying buzzing from the ear speaker during calls. I figured the speaker was blown. On my second one the sound was much less apparent but it was still kind of there. Its been about a week now and I believe it is now just as bad as the first one I had. Are these speakers really blown or just really crappy quality?

Vertically between the at&t logo and the handset speaker and to the left, there are 2 cutouts of the black trim behind the screen plastic/surface. They almost look like LEDs (although I realize they aren't, or shouldnt be). You can see them in the owners manual pics but they arent labeled on their diagram, and I can't figure out what they are.

My captivate external speaker plays music while I'm listening to the headphones, am I missing a setting to turn this off? Shouldn't the phone's external speaker not be playing music while I'm using my headphones? Sometimes the external speaker will remain silent while my headphones are working (as I would imagine should be the case) until I receive a text message, and then the external speaker will play music along with the headphones. Anyone think this could be a problem with my device? My 30 day period expires on Sept.5 so I am wondering if I should return it for an exchange?

OK, after being on the phone with AT&T for 2 hours and being conferenced call with Samsung this is the result:
Samsung claims that *3282# is the Samsung code to lower the notification volume.
Samsung claims that they are now aware that *3282# is the AT&T code to check our data usage.
Because of this conflict, they claim they will send an OTA fix; but will not state when that will be.
AT&T has been receiving many complaints regarding this problem. Samsung claims they have never heard of this before. Apparently they forgot to log in my call last week?

I bought my captivate 3 weeks ago from Amazon. It works well overall and I do enjoy a lot. Besides the GPS issue, low in-call volume bothers me all the time. Calls can only be heard clearly in a very quiet place, otherwise I need to keep saying sorry to people on the other end of line. I did search around the forum, no useful information on this subject can be found. So I am curious whether this issue only happens randomly on some handsets or it is a already solved issue which no one even bothers now?

Does anybody know of an app that will let you see your internal and external sd cards as one big volume? It just seems like it would be easier for me to manage.

I have a ADP1 that just developed a problem. The ear speaker volume is very low. My app does not adjust any volume, but I suspect that some other application is fiddling with it. Or, the unit is defective. (I've had it over a month, though.) First, is there a way to set the default volume of the phone? I couldn't find it. I've rebooted and even removed the battery to see if the default volume would come back. But, no luck. Notes: * The volume is turned all the way up. * Speaker volume is fine. * Bluetooth headset volume is fine

is the speakers equal to the HTC Desire? Or better? how can the phone ring louder when it is put in a bag? if it is already on maximum volume? does the SRS and Dolby Digital really have a difference? I'm seriously afraid of all those things before I buy a DHD

Has anyone noticed that their "System Volume" gets increased to max by itself?

I always keep my system volume turned all the way down. I don't know why anyone would want their phone to make obnoxious sounds when turning off. When do most people turn their phones off? Church, movies, meetings, basically anytime you want it to be QUIET. Anyway, I digress.
Something keeps turning up my system volume. Often when my phone shuts down due to low battery I hear the stupid shutdown sound. I think it may also have happened a few times when powering the phone off manually. I am rooted and I know I could rename the files, but I am getting tired of working around the bugs on this thing and having to keep track of all the files I rename. I try to keep it as "stock" as possible.
Any ideas on what might be turning my system volume up?

I use my Desire in the car quite a bit, and as I don't have a bluetooth hands free kit, my old one got smashed in the boot when I dropped a big tool box on it. Dumb ass, I'm using the inbuilt speaker on the phone. While for the most part, this is fine, I would like to increase the volume slightly. Obviously not enough to blow the speaker. I know there's an app/mod for the headphones volume, but what about the speakers volume? Anyway of increasing that?

Updated to 2.2. Did a factory reset. Am very happy with 2.2 - speed, battery life etc. all top notch. The speaker volume is still too low. Yes, it's a BIT louder but not much.

I made the switch from a BB Bold 9000 to the Captivate last Friday and so far I am in love! There is just one issue that I would love to gloss over but it's important given that it is a phone so I'd like your input. There was one other thread on this that sounds kind of like what I'm experiencing but I just wanted to be sure before I go in and exchange it.
When I am on a call, it is rather difficult for me to hear the person on the other end. I have the volume turned all the way up but not only is that not that loud but they also sound muffled. If it were one or the other I might be able to deal, but I never had trouble hearing on my BlackBerry and I never had the volume turned all the way up. It's gotten to the point where I'm unknowingly pressing the phone against my ear really hard so I can hear better. Has anyone else noticed that callers sound muffled? Should I exchange it?

My notification volume always seems to be adjusting by itself. How do you stop it? It can be my notification volume for gmail, text, meebo, or the notification volume in general. Is it something that I am doing that causes it to lower? or is there a way to lock the volume?
