Dont know if its even possible. Just thought I'd ask here first. I want to try a factory reset to see if it fixes some of my issues Ive been having with this phone. Will this get rid of my root?
View 4 Replies View RelatedWhat is the easiest way to root/unroot. Ive seen videos on easy root that looked pretty damn easy, just didn't know if it actually worked i guess it looked too easy. The only thing I want to do with root is get some nice themes more thank likely i won't overclock. Thanks in advance.

I've read about the One-click root, but I don't know if that's as easy as it gets (as of today) and whether it's an undoable hack.
So, I'm new to android and all things android with this being my first android phone. The only real modding I've ever done was jailbreaking the original iphone when I had it (before switching to a blackberry).
My main question is: what are the REASONS to root your phone? What are the benefits? Are there any downsides to rooting your phone? Basically, someone talk me into it..
i have root on my device an am running 2.1, if i wait for the official ota of froyo 2.2 will root stay on my phone or should i unroot it before the official ota?

View 5 Replies View RelatedTo those sick of seeing the AT&T apps but don't want to root. I bring you a solution! Launcherpro has recently received an update that allows you to hide apps in the apps-drawer. This will allow you to pretend the AT&T apps no longer exist without forcing you to root the phone.
LauncherPro v0.7.1.0 released!
I used DroidMod to root when I had 2.01. When 2.1 became available, I "un-rooted" then forced update to 2.1. Well to be honest, it is really slow and laggy. I now want to go back to DroidMod, but nothing I have tried seems to work.

View 3 Replies View Relatedknow there are tutorials on the root process with the "one-click" root, and some using your pc and USB drivers, This is the EASIEST way I think, and I just did it, so i know it works.I was at work today and I wanted to root my Captivate. All I have is my work pc, and my Captivate. No USB cables or anything. I had one powerful tool though. the Internet. You will need these 2 apps: Linda File Manager and Dropbox. Free in the Market.Go to Dropbox - Home - Online backup, file sync and sharing made easy. and download that to your computer. Sign up for it, it is cloud based file sharing. It's awesome, I use it every day. Already a user, great. On your pc, go download the root update file here: SGH-I897 Root Update.zip - File Shared from Box.net - Free Online File Storage Rename it to update.zipOpen up your dropbox and put it in the "public" folder. Now on your Captivate, open up dropbox and sign in.Open the public folder and tap the file "update.zip" to download it.Now open up Linda file manager.Tap "SD card", open the folder "dropbox". open "public", then tap and hold "update.zip". Choose CUT.Now just hit the back button all the way back to the SD card.Tap the menu button, tap EDIT, then tap Paste.Close all apps.Turn the phone off.Now just boot in to recovery.Hold down both Volume buttons at the same time. While holding those 2 buttons, hold the power button down.ONCE THE WHITE AT&T SCREEN POPS UP, RELEASE THE POWER BUTTON, BUT KEEP HOLDING THE VOLUME BUTTONS UNTIL THE RECOVERY SCREEN SHOWS UP. (You'll know it when you see it)You will now see the recovery screen.Use the volume keys to scroll down to "reinstall packages", hit the power button to select it.Let it do it's thing.BAM. 1-2 minutes later, your phone is rebooted and you now have superuser in the app drawer. This seems a little lengthy, but if you are already a dropbox user, it will go by fast.I rooted my Captivate in less than 5 minutes.

I am planning on rooting manually, using an article I found.
Before I root though, I would like to know if I can (or need to) unroot in order to receive an OTA update android 4.0 from verizon or if I need to take my phone in to get fixed for any reason.

View 2 Replies View RelatedIf I have a Nand backup from a fresh root before any ROMs were put on. Can I unroot from that first nand and go back to non-rooted if i choose to or do I have to go another route to unroot and be back to non rooted? I have searched and all I can find is downgrading back to 1.5 and I don't want to go back that far. This is purely hypothetical If I ever want to go back to original for purposes of selling the phone or having to send it back to the Big V.

View 6 Replies View RelatedI rooted my captivate and now need to return the phone back to AT&T for a hardware defect - how can i remove root?
View 6 Replies View RelatedI've had this phone since day one. I was counting down the days until I could get it. I'd gone from an iPhone 3G, to the Aria, to the Captivate. I was loving the Aria, so I was really excited to get a faster, more full-featured phone. And don't get me wrong, 65% of the time it is a great phone, as long as I'm not trying to listen to music (which is what I do 90% of the time on my phones). I love Swype, I love the screen, yada, yada, yada. All the stuff folks love about this phone, I love. But now I'm at a crossroads. I'm an audio professional. Music playback is seriously important to me. Shoddy playback just can't happen. I mean, this is the top of the top of the line when it comes to phones, right? It should do something as simple as playback music flawlessly, right. It should perform basic tasks without freezing, hesitating or any of that, right? My Aria was faster and more responsive than this phone (by far). And a little easier to use overall.
So now I find myself wanting to keep the phone, but if I do something's gotta change. I can't wait for months. I need basic music functionality now. So my choices are: 1. Root (which could damage the phone and put me in a more difficult situation). And I'm not a developer or anything. I'm a guy with a conversational knowledge of computers but way too busy a life to spend as much time as I have with this phone, although I've enjoyed the reading forums and tinkering. 2. Reset. Some say a factory reset has cured all their ills, but I'm skeptical. Do I want to risk having to take the time to re-input all my data on the off chance that it will magically solve the problem? Call me crazy, but I think the phone was at factory reset level when I bought it, and these problems have been around since day one.3. Return. Well, this is almost the same as factory reset, but with a trip to the store, grief from the folks there and the inputting all info again. And nothing guarantees that the new phone is any more or less glitchy than the current one?
Now, let me say that I don't want an iPhone 4. That's the whole reason I went to Android. I don't like the I4. I've been a Mac guy since 1990, I have an iPad, and iTouch, a MacBook, an iMac, a Shuffle, an iPhone 3G. I just don't like where Apple has gone, for the first time in my life. So, I'm asking you all: what the $&^ should I do? I'm at the breaking point with a phone I love.
Will the method described here:
Captivate Root
work on an updated firmware?
I may be wrong here as I am new to this whole game but I think I was able to load "restricted apps" by turning airplane mode on and then turning wifi back on. I searched for and installed pdanet with no problem right from the marketplace.

I am currently running a rooted Samsung Captivate. I have not flashed it or anything and am still running 2.1 with the firmware update (JH7). I rooted to get rid of AT&Ts bloatware which I did using System App remover. With Froyo on the way, I was wondering if a master reset would turn it back to stock (minus AT&T bloatware) and enable OTA updates again?
