In other words, if I had a zip file that replaced the framework-res.apk, would it work on any phone or tablet? I know the app wouldn't, but would the zip file?

I have a new Captivate and am attempting to establish a USB connection with Windows XP sp2.
I have downloaded setup two different USB drivers, (1) from Samsung--I assume it's the official driver, and (2) from the Android SDK. Both installations ran without error. But when I attempt to install either driver, Windows complains that it cannot locate the driver. I'm at a loss.
Windows is finds the Captivate when connected but only intermittently. Sometimes it identifies it and sometimes it doesn't.

This code works on the plain google devices with native android system. But there is no MMS app in the list on HTC sense devices and I don't know about Motorola Blur etc.:
final Intent emailIntent = new Intent(android.content.Intent.ACTION_SEND);
emailIntent.setType("image/png");
emailIntent.putExtra(Intent.EXTRA_STREAM, uri);
context.startActivity(Intent.createChooser(emailIntent, context.getString(R.string.send_intent_name)));
This code works on the HTC sense but not from the Chooser, what I really need:
Intent sendIntent = new Intent("android.intent.action.SEND_MSG");
sendIntent.putExtra(Intent.EXTRA_STREAM, uri);
sendIntent.setType("image/png");
context.startActivity(sendIntent);
But I don't know how to combine this code samples together and I don't know how to determine HTC Sense UI programmatically. Is it right way to support different type of devices?

Universal Eris Root for Dummies! You're not dummies, of course. But if you thought Jcase's spin on the new wag3slav3 rooting method was minimalist, this variation of it should help the fence-sitters and tech-intimidated join the world of Eris root.
- Zero typing!
- No SDK Installs!
- No USB Driver Installs!
- No Command Lines!
- No PC Needed! A Phone-only Rooting method!
Basically this is just a repackaging of the wag3slav3 method (as modified by jcase) into a form which allows you to do everything from the Eris without using a PC, and without any typing - just tap the Eris' screen in all the right places. For experts who are already have successfully set up the SDK and USB drivers, and are comfortable with the command line and adb, it is probably faster to just use the manual method. This method was created for the folks who have had trouble with, or are intimidated by, those things. Or, for those times when you want to help someone root their Eris without schlepping a "dev station" to their location.
Credits:
- Amon_RA for the custom recovery which makes the world go round
- wag3slav3 for the "mid.txt" chmod/symlink rooting exploit
- jcase for exploit code de-obfuscation
- rogro82 for the Gscript Lite tool
- cast of thousands for providing good shoulders to stand upon.
Prerequisites:
- Eris w/ any HTC/VZW release (including 1.5, all leaks V1-V3, & root-ROM)
- Install free Market app Gscript Lite (PinkVenture)
- Install free Market app EStrongs File Explorer
- Download gscript.zip (MD5 92796a8c6e61e8f1ee36e315c0acae7d)
- The ROM of your choice downloaded onto your SD card in the root folder.
(T2noob's PlainJaneT2 V2.0 looks good - includes the July 2010 updates.)
I have organized this walk-through as a picture-book in a couple of posts:
0) Announcement ( this post )
1) Setting Things Up with a File Manager
2) Rooting with Gscript Lite
3) Finishing Up
These sections follow below in individual posts. Before you get started, please review this checklist:
1) Did you choose a ROM, download it to your SD card, and check the MD5 signature/file length on the copy of the file on your SD card?
2) Did you install from the market the free apps "Gscript Lite" and "EStrongs File Manager"?
3) Did you download the "gscript.zip" file (link above) using the phone's browser?
::Changelog::
2010.07.20 v0.1 Initial Release
2010.07.21 V0.2 Clean up "mid.txt" symlink at completion of part2

I had a droid rooted and now I'm finally going to root my X. I was going to use the one click root because I honestly just don't want to deal with a lot of hassle. I read that the universal one click root doesn't work if I am already running Froyo. Is there a one click option that I can use?

How to: Root the DROID X Using Universal Androot
Universal Androot is one of the newer 1-click methods to rooting a whole lineup of devices and one of them happens to be the Droid X. We had been holding out a little on posting this until there were methods available for creating backups using something like Clockwork Recovery and since Koush just released that option, it was time.
*Note 1* This needs to be done before updating to android 2.2. This method does not currently work on droid x froyo. Instructions *Warning*. Just a reminder that rooting VOIDS your warranty and could potentially do permanent damage to your device. This is not a recommended practice and you do so at your own risk.
1. Download and install Universal Androot to your Droid X: Download Link
2. Open it and tap the Root button.
3. Your phone will now run through a series of commands.
4. When it finishes, it will tell you that you are rooted.
5. Reboot your phone and BAM!Rooted Droid X.

know there are tutorials on the root process with the "one-click" root, and some using your pc and USB drivers, This is the EASIEST way I think, and I just did it, so i know it works.I was at work today and I wanted to root my Captivate. All I have is my work pc, and my Captivate. No USB cables or anything. I had one powerful tool though. the Internet.You will need these 2 apps: Linda File Manager and Dropbox. Free in the Market.Go to Dropbox - Home - Online backup, file sync and sharing made easy. and download that to your computer. Sign up for it, it is cloud based file sharing. It's awesome, I use it every day. Already a user, great.On your pc, go download the root update file here: SGH-I897 Root Update.zip - File Shared from Box.net - Free Online File Storage Rename it to update.zipOpen up your dropbox and put it in the "public" folder.Now on your Captivate, open up dropbox and sign in.Open the public folder and tap the file "update.zip" to download it.Now open up Linda file manager.Tap "SD card", open the folder "dropbox". open "public", then tap and hold "update.zip". Choose CUT.Now just hit the back button all the way back to the SD card.Tap the menu button, tap EDIT, then tap Paste.Close all apps.Turn the phone off.Now just boot in to recovery.Hold down both Volume buttons at the same time.While holding those 2 buttons, hold the power button down.ONCE THE WHITE AT&T SCREEN POPS UP, RELEASE THE POWER BUTTON, BUT KEEP HOLDING THE VOLUME BUTTONS UNTIL THE RECOVERY SCREEN SHOWS UP. (You'll know it when you see it)You will now see the recovery screen.Use the volume keys to scroll down to "reinstall packages", hit the power button to select it.Let it do it's thing.BAM. 1-2 minutes later, your phone is rebooted and you now have superuser in the app drawer.This seems a little lengthy, but if you are already a dropbox user, it will go by fast.I rooted my Captivate in less than 5 minutes.

I've had this phone since day one. I was counting down the days until I could get it. I'd gone from an iPhone 3G, to the Aria, to the Captivate. I was loving the Aria, so I was really excited to get a faster, more full-featured phone. And don't get me wrong, 65% of the time it is a great phone, as long as I'm not trying to listen to music (which is what I do 90% of the time on my phones). I love Swype, I love the screen, yada, yada, yada. All the stuff folks love about this phone, I love. But now I'm at a crossroads. I'm an audio professional. Music playback is seriously important to me. Shoddy playback just can't happen. I mean, this is the top of the top of the line when it comes to phones, right? It should do something as simple as playback music flawlessly, right. It should perform basic tasks without freezing, hesitating or any of that, right? My Aria was faster and more responsive than this phone (by far). And a little easier to use overall.
So now I find myself wanting to keep the phone, but if I do something's gotta change. I can't wait for months. I need basic music functionality now. So my choices are: 1. Root (which could damage the phone and put me in a more difficult situation). And I'm not a developer or anything. I'm a guy with a conversational knowledge of computers but way too busy a life to spend as much time as I have with this phone, although I've enjoyed the reading forums and tinkering. 2. Reset. Some say a factory reset has cured all their ills, but I'm skeptical. Do I want to risk having to take the time to re-input all my data on the off chance that it will magically solve the problem? Call me crazy, but I think the phone was at factory reset level when I bought it, and these problems have been around since day one.3. Return. Well, this is almost the same as factory reset, but with a trip to the store, grief from the folks there and the inputting all info again. And nothing guarantees that the new phone is any more or less glitchy than the current one?
Now, let me say that I don't want an iPhone 4. That's the whole reason I went to Android. I don't like the I4. I've been a Mac guy since 1990, I have an iPad, and iTouch, a MacBook, an iMac, a Shuffle, an iPhone 3G. I just don't like where Apple has gone, for the first time in my life.So, I'm asking you all: what the $&^ should I do? I'm at the breaking point with a phone I love.

So, I'm new to android and all things android with this being my first android phone. The only real modding I've ever done was jailbreaking the original iphone when I had it (before switching to a blackberry).
My main question is: what are the REASONS to root your phone? What are the benefits? Are there any downsides to rooting your phone? Basically, someone talk me into it..

To those sick of seeing the AT&T apps but don't want to root. I bring you a solution! Launcherpro has recently received an update that allows you to hide apps in the apps-drawer. This will allow you to pretend the AT&T apps no longer exist without forcing you to root the phone.
LauncherPro v0.7.1.0 released!
