Samsung Captivate :: Email Wont Update On Phone
Jul 19, 2010
I just got my Captivate today and everything seems to be working except emails. I've sent emails to myself and refreshed my inbox to test it out and haven't received any on my phone. I love this phone but my iPhone 3G was able to receive emails instantly. If somebody could help me I would really appreciate it.

Anyone notice that new emails take 2-3 minutes to show up? I thought it was supposed to be instant?Yahoo email doesn't update until you open the email app.

Last night I recieved a text from AT&T telling me I have a software update and that I need to press "OK". Once the pop up showed I pressed "OK" and it downloaded the software and then the phone restarted. Now when I recieve e-mails, I do not get a notification to my cell phone. I have to press the Gmail icon and then refresh my email account to get the new emails. How do I go about fixing this? Its a Samsung Captivate.

I've had my Captivate since the 19th of July and have been pretty happy with it but today my email accounts disappeared from my phone.I've been using the email app that came with the phone without issues but today my personal gmail and my work exchange accounts vanished. I noticed I hadn't received a new email notification in several hours so I went to check my email it prompted me to setup an email account. Anyone else have this happen? I only have 2 days to return my Captivate, it's been a good phone so far but I cant afford to lose my email accounts for no apparent reason again. I haven't installed any new apps or made any changes to the phone.Coming from the Blackberry world I took it for granted that email just worked flawlessly.

Sorry if this has been answered, but I haven't found any many solutions through Google or this forum. The OTA update for the Samsung Captivate (that was supposed to fix the GPS and a couple other bugs) isn't working on my [rooted] phone. I am able to download it, but it says that the process failed after my phone restarts. Luckily, it doesn't brick my phone like it has done to some other people's phones. From what I can gather, it doesn't fail because the phone is rooted but because some of the stock AT&T apps have been removed. Is this the problem? If so, is there any place I can download those stock apps (AT&T Navigator, Where, Mobile Banking, etc.) and reload them onto my phone?

I just picked up a used Captivate an hour ago. I was messing around with the setting and saw an update section. So I did that and it said it found one, it downloaded it, and said the phone would reboot in 5 sec. After that, I get nothing. I had like 80% battery via the meter. Any tips here for a new (and scared) android user?

I just got my Captivate from AT&T and it has Firmware 2.1 update 1. First question is, Will I be notified on the Phone when an update is available? Second, I have my phone Rooted do I need to un root when Firmware update comes out and I upgrade? Final question, though this not a Firmware question per say I can't get GPS to work at all is this issue be addressed?

I'm a newbie to this forum, and hope someone can help. Have had the Captivate for almost a month now and am plagued by an annoying problem. I have set up email accounts connecting to a google-hosted email account via IMAP. I am finding that when replying to a received email, my reply goes out with redundant repetitions of the email address on the "to" line. Example: Email from soandso@gmail.com arrives. I click "reply" on the phone and the reply goes out to soandso@gmail.com; soandso@gmail.com; soandso@gmail.com; soandso@gmail.com etc etc *10 times*, instead of just once. It also copies me about 10 times! Is anybody else seeing this? I use this for work emails, so it looks very unprofessional like I am trying to spam my clients! I have another couple of days before my 30-day return period is up, so hopefully someone else know how to fix this. Is there some setting I am overlooking?

Does anyone else have the same problem? When I use the default email client from captivate, even when I set the checking period as every 10mins, I won't get new emails unless I open the app and manually refresh, well, except the one of gmail. This happens on my yahoo email, hotmail and my school email, which all worked fine on my old iphone. People have talked about yahoo mails won't be accessible through wifi from Android, which happens on mine too. But even when I was at 3G, the email client won't auto check it either. I have tried K9 email client, it doesn't work either. The only thing I find work is the MailDriod, but the function of this app is very limited, it won't even open attachments by default. Does anyone else here have the same problem, or maybe an idea to fix the default email client? Also, I find when I use the ear set make calls, when I try to click the button on the ear set, it won't hang up the call as my iphone would. Is this a bug or just something Andriod can't do? The button on the ear set seems quite useless with Captivate, it can only control to play or pause by single click when play music, won't do song change when doule click it.

If your download fully cancels in the middle, do not resume the download. When you try to resume - the phone will think you want to resume installation [it thinks the download is complete] and will update the phone with the partial firmware download. For those phones that were bricked, that is what was said happened to them - myself included. Now, why would the update not realize the firmware isn't complete and just abort the update is beyond me. Many of us ended up with paperweights from that. Had to go to AT&T to replace the phone last night.

For 3 weeks now I haven't been able to check for an update for my phone. Everytime I try, it says "Cannot connect to the AT&T server" and it won't let me try again for 24 hours at which point it tells me the same thing. Any advice?

New to the forum and the Captivate (3 days) and I have been reading this site and learning as I go but I had a question about some sort of better indicator or popup for sms and email?I am coming from a Blackberry 9700 so I guess I was spoiled. I am really digging this phone and have no intentions of going back ever. I see the little indicator at the top of the phone but I wanted something more noticeable or annoying.is there anything better?Figured I would ask you folks what you use or recommend for this phone. I will continue to read and browse the market - thanks for this site and the great amount of knowledge.

I would like to know what you guys recommend as an email client. The stock captivate email is confusing. It's hard to see which email is new and which ones have been read already.I'd like to be able to see my gmail, and yahoo mail on one screen if possible. It would also be a plus if the icon would be in the dock and display how many unread emails i have.

I'm just coming from an iPhone 3G to the Captivate. I'm having a few frustrating issues that I can't seem to get resolved....I'll start with the email client...
1) There seems to be a DNS flushing issue when the Captivate moves from WIFI to 3G. I run a split DNS with the WIFI on a RFC1918 network and of course a routed IP when connected to 3G.The problem seems to be that as the Cap moves on and off WIFI as I move in and out of range of the WIFI signal and the Cap acquires it's new IP address, it does not expire the DNS cache and there when it tries to contact the IMAP server when going from WIFI -> 3G, it's doing so via the RFC1918 address and therefore doesn't work.Has anyon else seen that?
2) I have the email client set to get new email every 5 minutes. But it sometimes never updates the inbox until I actually go in to that inbox, then it updates.
3) It doesn't seem to keep a history of email addresses I've used for fast completion. For example, if I email Bob@accountemps, every time I send Bob an email, it doesn't remember that I've sent Bob an email before, and I have to type the entire address again.y primary use of the smart phone is an email client, and these issues are really frustrating to me.

Just got a captivate yesterday and coming from an Incredible so far there are some things I really like about this phone and a couple not so much. One thing I can't figure out is how to disable the default email viewer? I am getting 2 notifications every time a email comes in. I get one in my gmail launcher and another in the notification bar. The one in the notification bar takes me to the email viewer that is blue and black and is the one I want to turn off.

I have a huge issue with email. I successfully added my Google Apps email account using POP. The client does indeed download the emails, though very slowly, but the main issue I have is that as soon as I manually check for new emails or the Captivate automatically does it (I set it to 15 minutes intervals), all the emails in the inbox on the phone disappears. After much investigating, it turns out that all emails that was already downloaded prior to a reload, were sent to Trash in Gmail. So when I log in online, every message that was originally downloaded to the phone, was now found in Trash. The only workaround I have found in order to keep the emails on the phone, is to delete them instantly. That way they remain in the Deleted Messages until I manually remove them.
So my question is: does the default email client work like it should at all or should I replace it with something. And if so, with what? It's a shame that a new phone such like this have issues with such a basic task.

This is my first andorid phone and as such i am a complete noob so please forgive my silly questions. My current issue is i am trying to use both gmail and my work email in one button(the email accounts stock app ALMOST does this but it will not allow me to use gmail labels which i must have!). Even if i could live without the labels functionality it seems the gmail app is not only my gmail email but myh contacts/calender sync and perhaps even my app ordering account? Does anyone have any ideas for combining my work email with my gmail app while not losing any gmail functionality as well as garenteeing i dont doubel download/sync with the current gmail stock app?
I also have the GPS issue that most people are haveing... are there really people who do NOT have this issue? or are those without the issue not checking? It would seem that if some people dont have this issue it must be a hardware issue? I am quite concerned with this issue... i ave tried the fixes and some work untill i reboot a couple times then i return to an unsable state(settings have not changed)

Just notice that when I use the provided email app with exchange it forwards emails as attachment. So when I go to read the email in lets say yahoo all I see is an attachment file. Is there any way to make it forward the message in-line? If not is there an app that will allow me to do this? Does touchdown do this? Any other apps that are cheaper or free?
