I found out that if you use the Samsung Keypad that it not only makes your phone a ton easier to use, but it also has an arrow pad if you hold the ?123 button down. I found it when I held down settings in the samsung keypad. Now my frustrations of cursor control are null and void and I don't have to worry about swype getting my text spelling horribly wrong

Why is the text cursor not there when using Swype? If I type a paragraph and need to change a word, I need to be able to put a cursor right where the word is so I can edit/delete/replace the word. Since it's invisible. Is this a problem or is there a different mechanism to achieve that in Swype?
View 8 Replies View RelatedI don't know if this is an android problem or more device related. All I know for certain is that its one giant headache. I thought it was just a matter of getting used to a different keyboard feel and figured I'd give it a while.
But its been several weeks now and its still Many times if its just a minor typo I'll just leave it rather than go through the torture of editing it.
The main problem is that it cannot be placed with precision. If you try it just jumps around from back to forth and line to line.
I know I'm used to the way it works on iPhone where you can get it approx near where you want it and them just press down firmly to move it to the precise place you want it.
Its impossible for me to do that with this cursor so I have to keep taking multiple stabs at it and hope for the best. I have pretty small hands and fingers and am obviously quite used to online keyboatds. But this thing is driving me nuts.
Am I the only one with this problem? Or is there just some little trick or technique of which I'm totally I the dark about?
Is there some sort of tweak to extend the amount of time the control keys at the bottom of my Captivate stay backlit? I hate guessing in low or no light conditions.

View 4 Replies View RelatedThe structure of some of my activities is a simple ListView with a custom CursorAdapter. The cursor is created in onCreate() on the activity from a SQLite database. The problem is that querying the SQLite database can be quite slow at times with lots of data (and let's assume I've already optimized the sql query as much as possible). Because it occurs in onCreate() on the UI thread, I get ugly black screens when opening the activity, which sometimes turn into ANRs, on a slow phone like the G1. I want to load the cursor in a background and show "Loading.." on screen while doing so. I saw AsyncQueryHandler used extensively in the framework, but this seems a solution geared more towards Content Providers and not application-local SQLite databases. I then thought of trying to load the cursor in a background thread, but realize that this might be problematic, as the CursorAdapter should be instantiated in onCreate() and should take a cursor as a parameter. The latest thought I had was to instantiate an empty MatrixCursor in onCreate() and pass that to the cursor adapter, while kicking off a thread/TimerTask to query the database. Then, on database cursor load, call cursorAdapter.change Cursor to the properly filled cursor. This doesn't seem very elegant and seems quite wasteful, however.

I am looking after an alternative way now. As what I ideally want is:
Get order of contacts by a custom order held in my database (this involves joining CR with my DB cursor, and doing an order by, later seams it's not possible with CursorJoiner) but there is more, if the join is not unique I want to sort by contact's name as last measure
Which is impossible using Cursor and Joiners, because of the missing feature of order bys, also I need to return a Cursor, as I will be using the in an ExpandableList
Also this translated to TSQL it would look like
select * from contactsdata
left join category on contactsdata.catid=category.id
order by category.pos asc, contact.display_name asc
So I am looking now after an alternative. I have in mind to load in a temporary DB table all data from CR, then do the query on the temporary table where I can join tables and do order bys? How does this sound to you?
How do you position the cursor in a text box? Evidently, some of the other Galaxy S models have an alternate keypad pop up when you press and hold the ?123 key in a text box.I have not been able to make it work on my Fascinate. Something like what's present on the iPhone(magnifies the text as you drag your finger to move the cursor along).
I rooted my captivate thinking that i could install apps that are blocked on my phone, like Sirius XM, WiFI tethering.....even after rooting the programs are still being blocked and i cant install them. am i missing something? im new to android and had an iphone that i jail broke. im confused on what rooting actually.

I was using simple free phone earlier which doesn't require data plan but after two weeks I bought samsung captivate, AT&T added $25 data plan. I got my phone from AT&T store where my friend works so he took my data plan out of the plan for now but he said they will find out and add into your plan again. Also, He said that they recognize by your IMEI number. My question is: Is there anyway I can change my IMEI number? I was thinking to use my simple free Nokia phone's IMEI number and use it for Samsung Captivate so AT&T thinks that I am using Nokia phone.

It happens at the top of the screen just to the right below the battery. It's a quick yellow glow then it disappears until my phone is locked then unlocked again. Now I have an AT&T captivate and wonder whether GPS or other apps will work. Does GPS require a data plan to work? If so I'll have to figure out whetted I can add this to my T-D1 plan. However neither Super Manager or ASTRO will allow me to uninstall the crap ware on my phone. Is there something I'm missing? I followed all the steps at XDA. When the phone vibrates during a call, it causes a severe rattling noise when the phone is in my hands or if the bottom is not resting against a hard object. Removing the battery compartment cover and repeat, and the rattle is non existent. With the battery cover on, the rattle can be diminished by pressing firmly on the top section of the cover.

I am having an issue with my M3U playlists.
I use the default Samsung media player, Isyncr and Itunes. Although I have also used the Doubletwist Player (not the desktop software) and had the same issue, I just prefer the Samsung default player mainly because of the lock screen app.
Here is the issue.
First, I sync my playlists with Itunes using Isyncr, all of the songs come over great, art and tags, everything is perfect. It also creates M3U playlists on my phone. I double checked that everything is there.
Then when I unmount, media scanner scans my SD card (which takes way longer than it should) and it deletes all of my playlists. Now a little research on XDA forums tells me that this is because anytime the media scanner scans a playlist and can't find all of the songs from that playlist, it assumes it is an old playlist and deletes it. The problem is that when I look through the M3U files, every song referenced in the list is on the card...they are all there, yet it keeps deleting them.
Does anyone know of a solution to make it stop deleting my playlists?

When I added the phone as an upgrade, not only did it not make me choose a data plan, it didn't even give me a choice to pick a data plan (at the moment I have just minutes and texts). Is this an error on the ATT system or you can get the phone and the data plan is only set up once you use the phone?
Because what I am thinking is upgrading 2 lines on my family plan - my line with an iPhone which requires data when you purchase the phone, and the Samsung on the line that will not get Data. I will only use one phone (the Samsung on my line) and sell the iPhone brand new in box. Will that work or will ATT realize when I only have one phone in use on my plan even though I 'upgraded/renewed' two lines?
Is there a way to make my fascinate a remote control for my tv without using Allshare? My TV is a year too old so doesn't have the allshare.?
