Samsung Captivate :: Rooted Captivate But Still Unable To Uninstall Bloatware
Oct 27, 2010
I rooted my Captivate tonight and I know how the superuser icon with android skull and crossbones. However neither Super Manager or ASTRO will allow me to uninstall the crap ware on my phone. Is there something I'm missing? I followed all the steps at XDA. So far I've tried to remove YPMobile, ATT Navigator, and ATT Maps. Any suggestions? I tried searching this on google and this forum but didn't come up with anything.

I got AT&T Samsung Captivate i897 (2.1 Eclair). I unlocked and rooted my phone. I was using simple free phone earlier which doesn't require data plan but after two weeks I bought samsung captivate, AT&T added $25 data plan. I got my phone from AT&T store where my friend works so he took my data plan out of the plan for now but he said they will find out and add into your plan again. Also, He said that they recognize by your IMEI number. My question is: Is there anyway I can change my IMEI number? I was thinking to use my simple free Nokia phone's IMEI number and use it for Samsung Captivate so AT&T thinks that I am using Nokia phone.

I've been with Apple for the last two years, so I'm sorry if these questions are relatively simple.
1. Will rooting let me get rid of any bloatware? Or touchwiz?
2. I hear that rooting on this isn't "true" rooting. What does this mean, will it eventualy be "true", and what apps will this prevent me from running

I checked my data usage at the AT&T web site and found that the phone was sending lots of data on its own. One night while sitting on the counter it sent over 19 megabytes at 2:41 am. For 4 nights in a row a data transmission ocurred at this exact time. Following are excerpts from my bill: Code...

I've rooted my phone and used TitaniumBackup to remove the AT&T bloatware. I've also configured it for sideloading apps so I could load the SiriusXM app from their website. Of course - now I can't get the OTA update. I just get the error where it says it's downloading, restarts the phone, says it's installing then reboots the phone again and says the update failed.
Maybe the OTA update is trying to update one of the bloatware apps and that's why it's failing? Or would removing the Superuser app (unrooting) and Busybox be enough to get the update?
Either way - because I deleted the apps using TitaniumBackup I have no backup (I know, I'm an idiot). I thought I did a TB backup before removing the apps but I have no idea where to look to restore them. They aren't listed in the app list when I click on Backup/Restore.

When custom roms come out for the Captivate will this be able to make it where it is bloatfree from AT&T and have custom things being able to add any apk app without doing the sideloading stuff ect? I am wondering if custom ROMs will make it where we can do whatever we want without AT&T restrictions.

Ok I figured out how to delete the ATT bloatware off the Captivate using Titanium Backup. But how do I reinstall it? I only deleted 'ATT Family Maps' for now until I can figure out how to reinstall things, incase I have a problem later and need to go back to ATT. I clicked 'backup' before i deleted it. But I don't know what buttons to press to get stuff back from the backup.

Droid Explorer
Check This Tool Out I Found! Android is Getting Convenient
Droid Explorer is a tool to manage your rooted android device with the simplicity of Windows Explorer. You can browse every file on your Android device, much like the infamous app "Root Explorer" does. I think this is very much so a handy tool for those that are in need of removing some software....like the bloatware that comes preintalled. Some of you may even want to add stuff, like Google Maps and so on. Try it out!!
I highly recommend standalone for Windows users.....

The title kinda says it all. I know how to uninstall an app (press, hold and drag to garbage can), but, I can't figure out how to uninstall a widget. I can go the apps folder and try the press, hold and drag thing but the widget remains.

So for the past year I have been using a blackberry bold 9700. At the time when I bought the phone, AT&T didn't have any really appealing android offers. Anyway, the captivate came out, and it seemed like finally there was a good, high end android phone for my carrier, despite AT&T's usual bloatware BS. So I went onto craigslist and found some dude who was willing to sell his captivate for 200 bucks + my bold 9700 (side question, was that an OK deal? I feel like a little less money would have been fair). So we met traded, I'm finally on android, I love the phone, but there is one problem. There is an application on the phone called superuser permissions that I can't delete.I found out it's a program used for rooting.Even though I plan to root my phone eventually, I don't want to root it yet (I'll wait until froyo is released for my phone), and I would rather just root it myself and know what I did to my phone, if that makes any sense.
To make matters a little trickier, I use a mac. I can transfer files between my phone and my computer by going into usb debugging, but the samsung only has drivers that work with Windows... I don't know if that's a problem or not but I just thought I'd mention it.

I just installed appbrain, and it shows bloat like cityID and VZ navigator. It also shows an uninstall option as well. Theoretically, can you Sync with AppBrain, uninstall all that bloat, then perform installs again when you need restore the bloat (for when updating or anything)? Haven't tried this yet but just wanted to see if others have.

I finally decided to root my phone. Ok everything went good with that done and done. But now what? I am not very good with all this just learning bit by bit a day, I know I want to get rid of the Att crap on here and have been reading a bit on how to do that and i think I can without screwing up my phone.

Sorry if this has been answered, but I haven't found any many solutions through Google or this forum. The OTA update for the Samsung Captivate (that was supposed to fix the GPS and a couple other bugs) isn't working on my [rooted] phone. I am able to download it, but it says that the process failed after my phone restarts. Luckily, it doesn't brick my phone like it has done to some other people's phones. From what I can gather, it doesn't fail because the phone is rooted but because some of the stock AT&T apps have been removed. Is this the problem? If so, is there any place I can download those stock apps (AT&T Navigator, Where, Mobile Banking, etc.) and reload them onto my phone?

I just rooted my phone and got carried away deleting apps. I am not the quickest when it comes to computers so I started deleting everything in red. Yes I really did do that. Now I cannot download. I cannot use my dialer. I think I deleted up to about C before I said uhoh I may be in trouble here. I rooted because I hate the phone. I liked my iphone better as it was quicker and had better email. Those are my main two things. Figured if I rooted I could get rid of the lag and set up a better email. Well here I am. I need help or this thing will be taking a jump out my truck window soon. Help me like this phone please.

I have rooted my phone using 1 click lag fix. everything is working fine.
I went to install the droid x Eye wallpaper - I transferred to my SD, then tried to install using Astro File Manager.. I get the popup stating that "For security, your phone is set to block installation of applications not sourced in the Android Market".
Is this because Astro is not using super user privileges?

Basically, something happened, my phone's battery died, and as usual,I just switched in a new battery, turned it on, it went to the splash screen, the glowing S.and then turned off.I tried to charge the phone, that didn't work.I thought the battery might just be dead, so I charged it over night, but nope. After I put a battery in, it does it's usual swoooshhh noise, turns on, S glows, then turns off. Then it won't turn on again until I take out the battery, put it back in, after which I turn on and the same thing again. Just for more information, the screen sticks on the glowing S for a reallllyyy long time, and it doesn't go through the "Turning off" animation anymore either. What's weird is I didn't even do anything at all with it this past week, other than play Angry Birds, call/text some people, and use the alarm on it.No idea what went wrong at all.

Im pretty much a noob to all these cell phone device operations etc. I thought launcherpro was pretty cool so i installed it but when i started using it, it seemed that my device was much slower than with just the original launcher. Also i was wondering if there is an app to take a screen shot without the phone being rooted (what does that even mean?)

What do I have to do to fix this? It keeps happening and I can't do what I want on my phone. Do I need to install a program to fix it? Or do the odin ROM load to stock and reroot it?

Alright, I am trying to root a friend's captivate but am unable to get to the recovery screen no matter what I do. We have tried every variation of keys. I have held the power, vup and vdown and let go of the power as soon as we see Att.I have held them all for minutes at a time. We have tried holding one or the other volume keys. No recovery screen.I have also tried using the "one-click" option provided over at xda.I installed the correct drivers, turned on USB Debug, and got no where with the program.I shows that it pushes the "update.zip" file to the sdcard, but does not reboot the phone into recovery to give me the opportunity to apply the update. My friend has tried a couple of different market root options...one called lagfix of something like that.It was a no go either.
