Motorola Droid :: Software Keyboard - Move Cursor Around Text
Nov 12, 2010
I use the hardware keyboard exclusively, but am wanting to use the software keyboard more, figuring that my next phone may only have that. My real problem is figuring out how to move the cursor around in the text. If I want to go back and edit using the hardware keyboard, I just use the d-pad to move back to the spot I need. How do I do that with the software keyboard? Am I forced to tap the screen (which never chooses where I want it, and I have to key pecking at it to get it in the right place)?

I can't see any arrow keys on the keyboard to move the cursor around in a text entry box. So, when I want to correct a typing mistake I have to stab my finger somewhere to the right of the error then backspace over the error (usually deleting a few correct characters in the process) before retyping. There must be a better way.

I am new in Android and i am working to make an on-screen keyboard which can be visitable via arrow(direction) keys of my external keyboard. I mean i wanna move left, right, up and down in the on-screen keyboard's UI (keys) with pressing arrow keys from my external(hardware) keyboard. The key that cursor is on should be focused, when i press an arrow key from my external keyboard the focused key should change and when i press "enter" from my external keyboard it should be operated.(written to the screen etc.) How can i make this? Is there any idea? How can i make virtual keyboard's keys visitable? It doesn't look like moving around a matrix of buttons.

Sorry for the newb question. Of course you can tap in the right spot, but that is not very accurate. The d-pad on the hard keyboard works of course, but what about on the soft keyboard?

Just noticed that there doesn't appear to be any kind of optical trackpad on it. How will you be able to do things like move a cursor through text? Are they just relying on the bigger screen to enable more accurate touching?

Can you use the optical trackpad to move the cursor when writing text? So if you realise you've gone wrong you don't have to place your finger in-between two letters. On my existing very old touch scree phone this is a big issue as i can never get the cursor exactly where i want Another trackpad question - what purpose does it have when browsing, does it highlight links allowing quick navigation without using the pinch and zoom?
Final track pad question- do you use it? The battery- with moderate to heavy use will it ALWAYS last a long day 7-11 for example? Hows the froyo update, is sense still as smooth as ever?

Has anyone found an easy, reliable way to reposition the cursor so that you can modify text you've already written? The only suggestion I was given was to "swipe" the cursor over to where I wanted it, which turns into a series of moves that have the cursor jumping all over the place. Are there no equivalents to the "cursor arrows" that let you move the cursor up, right & left?
Does anyone have a better way?

Is there a replacement keyboard that has a way to position the cursor without sliding out the useless physical keyboard? I despise the keyboard and would never slide it out if there were another way to move the cursor around.
I wish I liked the Incredible, but I don't. I would pay retail for a Droid without the keyboard and with the cursor function of the Incredible.

I have a background thread which queries for 1000 records at a time. After querying , when i call cursor.move To First(), the UI gets blocked until the operation is completed.This is very disturbing experience for user , especially if there are 10000 plus records.I use Thread.sleep in between after each 1000 records, As soon as cursor.move To First is called, UI blocks for 2 3 seconds. Am i missing anything here ?

I know I can just tap the screen, but so many times, it doesn't land the cursor right where I want to delete. Yes, I can go back, but that deletes everything. I just want to be able to move the cursor back to the part that I want to edit, add or delete.
Is this not possible on the DINC?

myInput.setText(myInput.getText().replace(myInput.getSelectionStart(), myInput.getSelectionEnd(), myText));
myInput.setSelection(myInput.getSelectionStart() + myText.length(), myInput.getSelectionEnd() + myText.length())
I ask because I think this code is much longer than it needs to be - Is there something shorter like myInput.insertTextAtCursor(myText) or is this the way everyone does it?

So the 2.1 keyboard speech to text feature has proven itself nearly flawless for me and as such, I'd really like to use it to write much longer things like entire emails, but I'd like to know if there's a way to add punctuation and start a new sentence.

I think theres an app floating around to measure text speed somewhere. IF not tell me how fast you text with it. My friend hates it so he uses swype (which i can't use worth crap) I text really slow on it, so i got an n1. Verizon plans are just too expensive for me anyway.

So I have the Droid X but I noticed that the Droid 2 now has a themed version of Swype to fit in with the rest of the UI. I like it a lot.
My question is this. When you push the voice-to-text button does it pop up a window like earlier versions of Swype or does it do the really fast and slick thing that the multi touch keyboard does (just replace the keyboard with the audio waveform thing).

Is there an app out there that will allow you to modify the vertical keyboard to text using the normal T9 mode for texting?
Note: I did search before posting and came up empty handed so dont bash me if this has been asked before.

I tried it and it works so far.
Dev = ne0fhyk from XDA.
From the XDA forum: Link to app page = [APP][ROOT/Keyboard] Keyboard Manager - Dual keyboard: Portrait/landscape switch - xda-developers
Verbage:
Keyboard Manager allows you to customize what keyboard (input method) appear on input based on your phone orientation.
It displays the keyboards you have enabled on your android device, and let you select one per orientation (landscape/portrait).
As your phone switch orientation, the app automatically switch the keyboard.
Requirements:
- Rooted android device (app was tested on Samsung captivate 2.1)
- Root Explorer app, or similar app that allows you to edit the permissions of a file.
To install:
1- Download the app (KeyboardManager.apk) on your device sdcard.
2- Using Root Explorer, move the apk file to /system/app
3- Using Root Explorer, edit the file permissions like below:
-- User: 'Read/Write' checked
--Group: 'Read' checked
--Others: 'Read' checked
4- Exit Root Explorer
The app should be visible in your launcher as 'Keyboard Manager'
Update:
- Added option to disable notification icon
-' start on boot' feature is disabled because it's not yet complete and tested... Sorry for the confusion
Bugs:
-On certain applications (i.e: Messaging on Samsung Captivate), the input window occasionally freeze on orientation switch. Exiting the app, and resuming should fix it.
The app is still in development.

I noticed the 4 big cursor keys on the side (landscape) and bottom (portrait) of the HTC Sense keyboard on the EVO. After playing with the HD2 that has the same layout, I prefer not having them there. It makes me have to reach farther with my right thumb to get to the spacebar and gives an unbalanced feel. I end up hitting the period by accident.
-Can the cursor keys be removed?
-If I install a 3rd party keyboard like Smart Keyboard or Better Keyboard (I've purchased both) on the EVO, will that get rid of the cursor keys?

One nice thing with the Evo is the always there cursor keys. I like some of the alternative keyboards but they all require toggling the ABC/123 key to get to cursor keys and then you have to go back to the keyboard to continue typing. It's quite annoying, and no matter how convenient they are (better key spacing, swype and what not), I just keep going back to stock for that convenience.
With the Evo being the first 4.3" screen, there is plenty of real estate to throw cursor keys in there with the keyboard as shown. I'd gladly pay for swype, better keyboard or keyboard pro (think that's the main ones), if they were able to do this.

Is there any way to add the cursor arrows that pop up every time the keyboard opens in AOKP ROMs? I'm looking for a mod or an Xposed module to allow this on my CyanogenMod ROM. Here is an image of it I found through Google.

I only just discovered this after owning the phone since January - but you can move the text autocorrect bar up and down by press-hold a la moving widgets on home screens! To many of you this is old news, but to many others this is kickass. This is great since I was always miffed that the default location of the text-correct bar always overlayed the text I was entering.

I discovered by accident that if you tap and then tap and hold on the screen it brings up a zoom box of where the cursor is and you can slide it where you want it.
