Motorola Droid :: One Concerned Google Has Too Much Personal Info Via DROID?
Nov 27, 2009
Don't get me wrong, I think its great what they are doing by integrating search with all the "smartphone features", along with trying to bust up the Mirosoft entrenchment, but it seems like they can potentially have access to too much personal info. I know much, if not all of Google access can be turned off, but if you want to use the phone to its fullest, everything you do can be stored/monitored on a Google server.
- If you want to transfer contacts from a non Android phone, list has to go to Google for conversion (Exchange excluded).they know who you associate with.
- Turn on GPS, use for application and search assistance.they know where you are.
- Create custom maps and use Nav they know your habits and where you're going.
- Calendar they know when you're going to go.
- Use search/browse history to aid Google in helping you find what you're looking for they know what you like.
- GDocs, stored online they know what you're working on.
- "Backup my settings".they know how you use your phone, and copies of personal files store on the phone (full flash of phone and SD card, still got wallpaper back then some?).
- You want a decent POP3 mail app, "have" to use Gmail they have all your personal email.
I understand that being able to get free "stuff", there has to be some sort of give/take, but working in IT and being the cynic that I am, I can't help but think that this phone was rolled out more for Google's benefit than ours (read, Data Mining). But I'm more concerned about a security breach given that so much personal info is stored in one spot.

I bought an Eris which I love, but will probably take it back within the 30 days to get an Incredible. Just wondering what's the best way to clear all my info & downloaded apps off the phone so it's back to the way it came in the box?

"You can tell that the processor is fast, but the UI still has a jerky quality to it - it's not totally fluid. We'd say that's more of an Android thing, though."Quoted directly from engadet's preview."Dont get me wrong: the Droid X is a delight to use. But at times, the hypothetical finish feels a little rougher than it should, and its lacking a certain refinement in how it switches between screens, in how it responds to the touch that one sees in an iPhone or even iPod."Quoted from Zdnet.com's preview.I have hopes that the phone is nice and fluid. I remember the droid when it first came out was lagy, especially on the home screens. Lets hope the X is not.

Am I doing something wrong? If I am using Google Maps/Navigator - happily following along as my car wends it's way down the street and I have to exit to say, answer a phone call, look at another app. when I go back into Navigator my destination info is gone. I have to re-enter my destination.

Whenever I see an app that requires the use of this information, 9/10 times I do not download it. I see a lot of games on the marketplace that require this information and I just don't see the point in a game where I toss paper into a trash can needing to know my location at the time I am using the app. Do any of the rest of you see any red flags that turn you off of certain apps despite how cool they may seem?

I have been wondering over the last few days since getting an Android phone and trying to configure it to make it at least as productive as my previous smartphone. How secure is the information in a world where we put a large amount of personal info behind google-id and password? This id and pwd is plugged into the phone for functionality. We browse the Android Market for necessary apps provided by complete strangers and click Install. We click OK when caution is raised, with unknowing consequences and taking complete responsibility for the installation. Am I justified in being paranoid with Android model of doing things?
Please read the thread "ActiveSync for Android, Moment?" to understand better why I raise this question.

My husband & I both have Droids and use the calendar daily. Usually we just invite each other as guests to every event we add. We decided to share each others calendars in hopes that the calendar info would show up on the Droid calendar, but its not, only on the computer.

Is there a good program to backup your all your apps, files, shortcuts, bookmarks and personal settings. I know Astro has a "backup" function but I don't know what it actually backs up. I know you can back up your contacts Google.
I guess what I'm asking is if there's a way to "clone" your Droid, not just the SD card.

Does my contact list need the socialnetworking.apk to update the data for the contacts from FaceBook? (pictures, status.)My "last" updated was a date AFTER I removed the .apk, but since then it was stuck basically on the 24th of Oct.Pictures I know are different on facebook dont come to my phone.I tried deleting and re-adding the account, and that fixed it, but thats not a long term solution.Does it need that APK or not? If not - how do i get it to sync more often?

My wife brought up a good point the other day. In case of emergency, my phone couldn't be used to identify myself, or be used to contact her. This seems to be a major oversight on Googles part. When locked, all you can do is dial a number from the emergency screen. There is no option to call someone listed as an emergency contact. Leaving my phone unlocked is not an option.

Just realized something that kind of upsets me. My buddy asked me for another friends phone number the other day so I of course went into contacts expecting to be able to text it to him like my dumb razr could. Much to my surprise I couldn't find the option, pretty disappointing considering he has an iPhone and made a HUGE deal out of it...
Ive tried Contact Sender which works, but I would like something that integrates into the "share" options in the contacts, or even the attachment menu in a text.

So is anyone still waiting on progress to be made on the bootloader before going OTA? With root of course
I am having rare stability issues with Flyx / Tranquility on 2.3.9. I never went past this update/combination.
Im thinking if going to 2.2 OTA and rooting seeing as though it seems like no work is being done on cracking the stock bootloader. I know it is, but we haven't gotten any info from anyone lately. What are you guys doing?

In a current thread, a forum member asked if there was a way to disable data. Putting my search skills to the test, I found the method ... and a whole lot more. This is really cool stuff. (I thought it was worthy of it's own thread.)
- Open dialer
- Dial *#*#4636#*#*
- Tap on 'Phone Information'
- Press Menu button
- Tap on More
- Tap Disable data connection (Or, Disable data on boot.)
Simply reverse the steps to re-enable your data connection either immediately, or after your next reboot. There's a whole lot more to checkout while you in there.Just be careful. You don't want to screw up anything.

So when you go to the *#*#4636#*#* menu there are copious amounts of things referencing gsm and gprs? You can change the mode to gsm only and wcdma and all this gsm stuff that doesn't work! If your connected to the 3g it says the gprs network is connected?? There is no gsm so why does it say that? I am not trying to start something that there is a hidden world mode because I know there is not. There is also a sim card address book??? So why on a phone that has no affiliation to gsm is there even any data in about gsm and almost no data on cdma? I mean sprint has had android so it is not new to cdma? It just makes no since that it almost has no cdma id but all gsm? Can anyone explain why Motorola would even consider adding this info?
