Motorola Droid X :: WiFi And 3G Signal Drop Because Of Hardware Or Software
Aug 28, 2010
Has it been determined if the issues with WiFi or 3G signal dropping a hardware issue on the device or a software issue? I have 3 days left to exchange it for a brand new one and it would defeat the purpose if it ends up being on the software side. I really love the heck out of my DX (52hr battery life with light usage!). But I'm getting sick and tired of either signal dropping randomly and not being able to connect on the Internet. I have to turn WiFi off/on, or with 3G, wait 'till it finally decides to reconnect itself again or close window and try again. When I do get a locked signal, it is fast, but within 10-15 minutes it drops. With WiFi I have tried many configuration with my router and everything is a No Go, same results.

Are you guys experiencing any issues with the WIFI signal on the droid? I am not getting any signal in areas of my house where my iPhone and Droid Eris (exchanged Eris for Droid) had no problems.

I launch the wifi tether program, but my laptop (a whopping 6 inches away) finds NO SIGNAL. I am running Bugless Beast 0.1 Froyo with P3's 250-1000MHz kernel. Everything else works great, including Flash 10.1 but I can't seem to get wifi tethering working. Not a show-stopper, but a nuisance I would like to fix. Anyone else with this problem? And have any of you figured out a fix?

Is there any way to set up WiFi so that the phone automatically connects to a saved WiFi signal? Example. when I walk into my house my phone auto detects and switches to WiFi without me going into settings?

I think I figured out why sometimes my Droid stays on for 1.5 days and sometimes after 6 hour of just being idle the battery is drained.
When wifi is turned on an connected to a network, the cellular signal is way low and it just drains the battery.

Lately it seems as though every time I tried to use the Market ,Slacker radio or Pandora radio I have problems staying connected to the network. Even with a fairly decent wifi signal I receive a network error message. My phone is completely stock other than Apps I have downloaded.

So, I'm reading all of this hubby about the iPhone losing signal when you hold it. Mr. Jobs says this is normal for all phones. I disagree. See my video for proof. /so glad I ditched the iPhone and ATT. You Tube - HTC EVO doesn't lose signal strength when you hold it!

Just wondering if anyone else has seen this issue. I have some Altec Lansing Backbeat (903) bluetooth headphones that I use with my Galaxy S. Very nice, decent quality, signal doesn't drop much, etc. Generally very pleased. My phone is however now being a pain with them....
Previously turning the headphones on, with the bluetooth already enabled would cause them to connect automatically. If i didn't have bluetooth turned on i'd have to manually connect from the bluetooth settings once I had enabled it. So far so good.
About a week ago my phone started 'forgetting' the headphones. This means almost every time I want to use them I have to pair them again. A huge pain. Even when the phone hasn't forgotten them they don't connect automagically, meaning I still end up in the settings menu. Any thoughts?

My droid x signal pretty much always between -92dBm and -87dBm with 1-3 3g bars. My former droid eris would get -92dBm with 1 bar and also drain incredibly fast.
On the droid x, if I go into google maps, the circle of the cell tower appears and the place I live at is half way within the edge of the circle and the other half is outside of the circle. I always seem to be connected to this tower. Bad luck I guess that I'm on the outskirts of the circle.
Does anyone know how cell towers are distributed? Do they overlap sometimes?
I run pandora with the screen off for a half hour with the screen off and my battery is down to 70%. I have about 15% screen brightness and battery saving mode on.
yesterday, I was on meebo for an hour and 45 minutes and it was down to 60% from a full charge.

I am switching my phone from Droid X to something new one (probably Droid Charge..) soon. After I switched, my old Droid can be used for checking email or surfing web within Wifi area? Since my Droid will soon end its contract, I want to give it to my friend who just wants to have it as a web checking device.

I'm certain this is a router issue seeing as my Eris can find all other hot spots, but my phone cannot detect my Belkin Wireless N+ router, even when it's very close. I am wondering if anyone has had this issue and how to maybe fix it.

New to Eris and have set up Wifi to connect to home router (Verizon FIOS Actiontec). Successfully connected (accepted WEP) but get very weak signal and then lose connection. I've turned off "Mobile Network" but still have this problem. I am one room away from router and receive full signal on iMac and printer but only a dot under the Wifi symbol on the Eris. Exchanged a Motorola Droid (which received and held full signal -- as did my prior iPhone)) for Eris. VZW tech support clueless and immediately sent me to HTC support. While they tried (had some not very good explanations -- battery not pushing enough power) still nothing working. Any advice/help would be greatly appreciated -- this is the only downside right now.

I am virtually unable to get a wifi signal in my house on my droid x unless I am a few feet away from my router. None of my other wifi devices in my house are having this issue. When I check my wireless settings on my dx it says the signal strength is poor. I'm running rooted GB 4.5.602. Does the baseband have to do anything with this (BP_C_01.09.13P)?

As many of you have probably read, the Wall Street Journal said yesterday that Verizon will be selling the Iphone early next year. How many of you will drop the Droid X for the Iphone?I am so fed up with the 3g drop issue! Verizon sent me a replacement phone. Not only did the replacement phone arrive with the same 3g drop issues, the replacement phone has such a bad buzzing in the ear piece that it's hard to hear someone speaking!

Has anyone done a drop test on the Droid?I love the phone but hate how my case makes it look even more clunky. I used to have a blackberry which I dropped many times, and it was fine.I'd love to just use a skin. Thoughts?

This was updated about 5 minutes ago, I happened to refresh the page after the DL links were broken and from Beta 5 to Beta 6. Different color choices. I like this theme ALOT - I used the Blue Beta 4, and there were some quirks, hopefully that's all fixed up. Loading now DropTheme [MM] - Droid Forum - Verizon Droid & the Motorola Droid Forum

I have my Droid connected to my computer via the USB that came in the box. The phone recognizes the cable, chimes, and has the USB icon on the screen. But the computer doesn't recognize the phone at all. It could be a problem with my computer, but I'm checking here in case I just can't find the option on the phone to "allow USB connection" or something.

I want to reach out to others here before I take my Moment back to Best Buy to exchange it for another Moment.
My signal strength fluctuates wildly just sitting in the same spot. With the Hero I got a constant 5 of 6 bars, but the Moment will vary between 0 and 5 of 6 bars. But it's more complicated than that.
It seems that whenever the EVDO data kicks in, it causes the signal strength to drop to 0 or 1 bar. Once the data is idle, the EVDO indicator turns grey and then changes from EV(^v) to EV(D). At that point the single strength will return to 3 or 4 bars.
At times, though not as consistently or often, the EVDO connection will fall back to 1xRTT and will switch between them every few minutes. This will occur even when the signal strength bars are in the 3 to 4 range.
So, the my questions are...
Does the signal strength apply to the data signal or just the voice signal?
Is there any legitimate reason for the signal strength to vary wildly like I've described, even when sitting in the same recliner where the Hero had a constant 5 bar connection and data service that never wavered?
Is anyone else having signal strength and/or data service issues?
Should I exchange the Moment for another Moment or will I likely experience the same issue?

I have a Apple Time capsule I use for my router and I'm not getting very good signal when using wifi on my EVO. If I'm sitting on my couch 8 ft away it only gets 1 signal bar on the phone. If I walk up to it with my phone the signal starts to get better. Any advice? I have the Time Capsule because I use a MAC. Just FYI before the bashing starts.

Originally when I contacted HTC about wifi issues I got an email reply with a potential solution in it to try. That solution didn't improve anything so today I received a phone call from them. The person I spoke with was trying to collect as much info as possible. Evo software version, s/n, meid, type of router i use, distance away from router when signal drops out etc.I asked him if they'd been able to find something wrong with hardware or software so far and he said i'm the first person that he was actually able to get a hold of to get feedback. Seems like this is in the infant stages. While the evo was booting up I asked if there are anymore OTA updates coming soon and he said they are working on a lot of fixes right now so it was hard to say. I also asked when evo would be getting 2.2 and he didn't sound optimistic about getting it soon. His understanding was that nexus recently released to press that it was getting 2.2, he doesn't think the actual phones even have it yet.

The wifi indicator sometimes only show 1bar. Meanwhile i sitting maybe 10 feet away from my modem/router. Speed test shows me getting 3200 kbps down and 1200 kbps up.With two bars I am getting 8700 down and 2400 up. I never get 3 bars. Any analysis of these numbers? Are they typical? Anything I can do to achieve 3 bars?
