Motorola Droid X :: Diminished 3G Quality
Jul 16, 2010
I've loved my X; I've basically camped on it the last 24 hrs.
Anyway, I am having a slight - yet frustrating - issue. Sometimes when I'm using the browser, or more prominently, downloading an app, the 3G seems to come to a stand still for about 5-10 minutes (or until I restart the phone).
It can be very frustrating. Has anyone else noticed this problem? I was thinking maybe it was a hardware issue with my particular phone.

call quality been on the X? I have spent a lot of time in the forums here learning about the phone's capabilities and havent once thought about the phone being used as a. However, that is a good thing, because I have had great clear calls which was in contrast to my previous phone, so since the phone has been working as it should, I havent thought about it. But my calls (listening to the person on the other end, and how they say I sound) have been pretty near perfect.

can anyone recommend a quality car mount for the droid? I know Google made one specifically for the N1 which was a pretty nice unit, did verizon or Motorola offer one?

Next wenesday I go on vacation so I thought id put a few movies on my droid to watch on the trip. So I have a few questions:1. Is there a way to watch .divx or .avi movies yet on a droid? My droid is rooted if that matters.2. What resolution will fill the whole screen? What resolution would you reccomend?3. If divx and avi, don't work, what codecs should I encode movies into?4. What is the best converting application for movies?.

I didn't see anything about scratchy voice on MY end, just other's end. Anyone else have the issue? Everything sounds fine and loud, except a consistent scratch in the background. Does the programming thing help for that? Or is that just on their end? Granted, actually talking on the phone is the LAST reason I bought it, but for the couple times I actually do use the phone part, it's annoying.

What do you all think of the quality of the pictures on your DX's? No need to post pictures..... just want your opinions. Maybe rate 1 - 10 with 10 being best. I hated the pictures I took on my Droid 1. The quality was poor at best. Especially inside. I've taken a few with the DX using Vignette and they are pretty good.

I thought something was wrong with my specific phone. But, once I spoke to some buddies they explained they were having same issues. Inside, and night photos are horrible. Outside shots with no movement are ok. 5 Megapixels,, quality seems more like 2 megapixels.

I am trying to listen to pod casts on my DX while it is charging via USB. For the first 5 minutes or so it works great but then I start to get static. The static goes away as soon as I unplug the USB cable. Same thing happens in the car while listening to pod casts and plugged into my car charger.

On the Droid X, the caller ID which is synced from my Facebook or Google account is very low quality and small in size/dimensions. Is there not a setting to show high res quality and to make it appear larger on the screen? I just switched from the Evo and know that it was a similar issue on there. just curious if there is a known work around for the Droid X. Other than that, I am very happy with this phone so far. The build quality is much much better than the Evo's.

Emulators are fun and all but, I have just been playing Tom Clancy's H.A.W.X. on my iPod Touch and nothing in the android market can touch it. The difference in graphics and game play between the Apple App Store and the Android market is huge. Is it a limitation of other android devices? From what Ive read the Droid has the same (or similar) processor as the iPhone 3GS. I am playing games on the 2nd Gen iPod Touch which has a slower processor and it performs flawlessly. I am not an apple fan boy and have never owned a iPhone. I love my Droid and want to be able to hand my touch to my wife and forget about it. Will the Droid ever get any high quality gaming apps?

I wasn't having much luck with the video recording, but saw a thread on how to improve the quality with a few modifications. Thread here: http://androidforums.com/motorola-droid/39706-higher-quality-video-recording.html. It suggested that I change the bps from 300,000 to 800,000. I couldn't really figure out how to do it, so I never did. I eventually installed the Sholes ROM from the Market and noticed an instant improvement in video quality. I checked my Astro file, (in the system/build file as in the link posted above), and noticed that it is now set to 900,000 bps, rather than 300,000 obviously this was changed automatically by the Sholes ROM. Just another confirmation that the Sholes was a great decision, for me at least. Here's a couple of videos to show the difference. This is a breakfast/storage room and my dog, Riley, who never knows exactly how to behave in front of the camera.

Liking the music sound quality (out of the 3.5mm) on your Droid X. Since I use my phone as my primary music playing device, SQ is critical. (I typically listen with super high quality in-ear monitors - Shure SE530;s.) I haven't had a chance yet to A/B with my iPhone 3G (which sounded pretty damn good!) but so far, I'm reasonably impressed with the DX audio.

Does anyone actually have decent voice quality on their Motorola Droid? I am on my fourth DROID and so far every call I have made people have complained that I sound muffled. I know there are a slew of threads on this, especially on Motorola's forums, but no one has an answer. Some people say they do have good voice quality. I am wondering who does and if they can post recordings of their voice quality. The Droid is an excellent device, however it should always first be a phone. It absolutely sux in that department, and I am seriously considering exchanging for an old fashioned flip within my 30 days from verizon. My RAZR and RAZR2 were far superior.

Has anyone else experienced this? I got the dead pixels on the camera after the update as well, but now there seems to be a red tint in video mode and well, the video doesn't seem very "HD" to me.

I am hard to impress and this device really impresses me. No bugs or issues yet that I haven't been able to fix. Camera works great. Screen is beautiful. Everything is solid. Call quality is great. Signal is rock solid (better, in fact, than my old LG, which was itself good). GPS is crazy accurate (can tell which couch I'm sitting on within the same room).
Motorola, Google, and Verizon is a team that's hard to match if the owner is ready to invest the time in setting up the device properly.

I currently have a Jawbone II headset and just got my Droid a couple days ago. My wife keeps on saying that when she calls me that my voice is very echoy. is this a common issue w/ the Droid, or is there something I need to try to do to possibly fix this issue. Other then this, the phone is great, but because I live off my bluetooth headset this is a big issue for me.

I did not see any other open threads on this; there is a very simple system edit you can perform to record video @ 8 mbps, up from the default 3 mbps. This is from a reliable source. Works very well. Root access is required and, of course, be sure to backup everything before you try anything.
The Droid compresses recorded videos (which results in blurriness and some blocking), so today I started poking around the system files and found this line in build.prop:
Code:
ro.media.enc.hprof.vid.bps=3000000
Which basically means video is compressed at a fixed rate of 3Mbps. I didn't think it would work, but I went ahead and changed the value to 8Mbps:
Code:
ro.media.enc.hprof.vid.bps=8000000
Rebooted and shot a test video. Lo and behold, the video is now recorded at 8mbps, resulting in a MUCH crisper image!
To apply the fix, you need root access. Simply edit that line in your /system/build.prop file. You can pull the file from adb, edit it, and push it back, or mount the /system partition as read-write and edit the file with Astro.
Edit: For the more adventurous users, here's another tip: I've been tinkering with the rest of the video settings in build.prop and comparing the resulting videos. So far, the best setting I have found is actually using MPEG-4 SP instead of H.264, 8 Mbps bitrate, and 30 frames per second. The phone chokes at 30 fps in H.264 mode, but does a pretty good job with MPEG-4 SP, and at that bitrate, the image quality is still very good regardless of the codec. The pertinent settings are "ro.media.enc.hprof.codec.vid" for the codec ("h264" for H.264 and "m4v" for MPEG-4 SP) and "ro.media.enc.hprof.vid.fps" (you can choose anything from 1 to 30)

Just gotta say that they are in for a hell of a ride. The N1 looks to be an awesome device and they are going to get to have the kind of fun we've all been having with a spanking fast shiny new Android phone.More than that I'm really excited to see this tsunami of sweet Android devices to hit the market.It doesn't take much imagination to realize how much the Market is going to grow with quality apps.
That said, I'm still very happy with my Droid AND a little bit jealous of the N1 already, all at the same time. I may even buy it at some point in the coming months, but most of all, this is exciting news for the platform we all know rocks

I never watch YouTube videos in anything other than high quality. But the only way I can see to change the quality is via the menu on a per-video basis. It defaults to the lesser quality, which is REALLY crappy!
Is there some way to change the default to play videos in the best quality?
And also, what's to gain by playing them in the lesser quality? Bandwidth? Battery conservation? Load time? For a phone with such a magnificant display size & resolution, I can't imagine why anyone would want to view videos in anything but the best quality possible.
