Motorola Droid :: Where Apps2sd Location Actually Move Apps?
Oct 4, 2010
So I have moved several apps from internal memory to my SD card using the 'Move app to sdcard' option in managing programs. My question is where does it actually move the apps? I know by default the apps get installed to /system/app but where is the sdcard location?

With 2.2 installed, I am wondering which types of apps I should be moving to the SD card. All that will move? Just data hogs? Is there any performance difference coming off the SD card as opposed to internal memory?

Is there an app for rooted users to accomplish this, outside of custom roms? I'm using simply stunning.. If there is an app, is there a way to move all stored apps to the SD card?

Just curious, I ordered a new Droid X and it will be here in couple of days and I wanted to know if I can either uninstall my paid apps from my original Droid and then install them onto my Droid X or is there a way to move them over to my new X. I only have a few paid apps. Documents to Go Pro, Weather Bug Elite, Remote VNC Pro, but didn't want to have to pay for them again, if they can be moved over.

I used the option in batching Titanium Backup to move apps and data to my sdcard to save some space. I've decided I want to move it back so that it's available when I press the Launcher. I know where it's stored on the sdcard and I have root explorer, but I'm just not sure which folder to move it back to in the first place. which folder houses all the apps that are currently available via the Launcher?

I'm running succulent desire 7.0 simply black on my droid with chevys 1.2 kernel, and under manage applications I don't have the option to move all apps to the sd card. Only a select few are moveable. My sd card is partitioned also. How can I get the option to store all the apps on sd. I remember seeing a way on terminal emulator, but I forget the code/steps.

As the title suggests, is it possible to add/implement apps2sd into an ESE81 ROM? This is the only feature CM offers that I am really after... I understand of course the kernel also has to allow for this, which AFAIK the regular ESE81 kernels do not do as of yet..
If not, hopefully CM for Droid gets more refined/polished specifically for the Droid itself soon..

As of now, you have to go to settings->applications->manage applications and open up every app individually just to even SEE if its enabled as an option.

If you are using apps2sd, will all apps install on the sdcard by default or can some go into internal storage space? Reason I ask is that I had previously removed ThinkFree Office from my stock ROM for space saving purposes. Now with apps2sd capabilities, I figured i'd reinstall it (from an .apk backup I had) since it would go on the sd card, so I thought. After installing it, it seems like it installed under internal storage space because I lost about 9mb of internal storage, which happens to be the same size as the app itself.

I have just installed CyanogenMod 7 on my HTC Desire.
I partitioned my 16GB Class 10 MicroSD card into a 14GB FAT32 partition and a 2GB ext3 partition. I installed DarkTremor's apps2sd scripts, and the apps2sd gui. I set it to save apps to the SD card, and to move the dalvik cache to the SD card.
Everything was working well: I was able to install apps, and they were going to the SD card (had they not, I would have hit the limit of the Desire's internal storage!). Rebooting didn't negatively affect anything - I rebooted several times and the apps were still there.
Then, when I opened the Theme Explorer, the phone just hung. It didn't respond to any input, from the touch screen to pressing or long pressing the power button. Eventually, in desperation, I took the battery out to do a hard reset.
When the phone booted back up, all the apps I had just installed were gone. Their icons remained on the homepage, but with the generic Android icon instead of their actual icon. They were missing from the ADWLauncher panel. The apps are still present in the list of apps, but are missing their icons and proper names. Instead they are displayed with a generic Android icon, and their "long-form" name, for example "com.amazon.kindle".
In addition to all the apps I had installed being missing, certain apps that came with CyanogenMod were also missing, such as: ROM Manager and the program that lists the apps with root permissions (I forget the name). Also, the Market application is missing. However, the calendar, messages, Google Talk, Theme Chooser, etc are all still present and working.
I tried rebooting the phone multiple times, as well as unmounting and remounting the SD card, with no improvement.
Using the terminal emulator, I can see that /sd-ext still has five directories: app, app-private, dalvik-cache, data, lost+found. However, all these directories, including the /sd-ext/app directory, are empty.
Running a2sd reinstall goes through the list of apps, but for each app that is missing, it says that it cannot find the .apk file for that app.
I suppose, then, that I have two questions:
1. Can I restore my apps somehow?
2. If not, and I have to reinstall, how can I prevent this from happening again?

Force apps2sd with Titanium backup! Make sure you have froyo, busybox, and of course root. Once in titanium backup, go to all your apps, long press on one such as flash 10.1 app and you can move it to your SD card! Note: not all apps can be forced to SD card, but most can! Is there a way, to go from Apps2SD to NOT using Apps2SD without losing apps or app settings?
The process as I understand it is:
Make a Nandroid Backup (or do you need Nandroid+ext?)
copy SD contents to PC
Wipe phone, Wipe and repartition SD card w/ no ext
replace contents of SD card (while in Recovery you can mount the card, correct?)
flash ROM
Restore
The question I have is, will all the apps and settings be in the restore, or will I need to reinstall and set everything up again?

Just a quick thank you to all the regulars who give up their time to populate these forums with some great advice that has made my first week of Hero ownership so much more fruitful. Now I wish to move a photo from one place to another folder using Astro and somewhere I'm losing the plot. I long press the photo, I then choose edit, then move......but then how do I actually move the photo/file to it's new location?

I want to move some files from sdcard to /data/data/myapp/files folder, I can use OpenInputFile and OpenOutputFile and write to it, then delete the original one. But it is slow, so, I tried to use oldFile.Rename(newFile), but it always return false. Any idea? The reason I am doing this is to hide some files from my sdcard, so, nobody can see them.

I've moved some apps to the sd card to free up memory on the Droid 1.
I'm wondering what happens when I flash and install a new os. I'm sure that, like a Windows PC, the new ROM won't see those apps on the sd card. No problem reinstalling.
Is there a way to find those orphan apps on the sd card and delete them so as not to clog up the sd card?

I am using an Android and I have downloaded several media files using xscope, but I can't figure out how to make them my ringtone. I use ringroid to organize my ringtones, but I can't get the files I downloaded through scope to show up in ringroid. I know it is a stupid question, but I'm not phone savvy so if anyone knows how to move these downloads to the proper location to use as ringtones.

I got a X about 2 months ago and have loved it so far. I moved a digital version of Star Trek to the droid but did it by just copying directly to the droid after enabling mass storage mode.
What i'm wondering is if that's the best way to move movies over? It looks great but the sound seems to be a second behind the video which I wasn't sure is because of the way I transferred it.
I saw people recommend dvdfab, which i've heard of. Does Vcast media manager work as well or does it not matter as long as you use a good converting program?
Also, just bought Blue Ray versions of SWAT, Death Race, Shooter which were newer so there is no digital version. Is there a legal program to copy them to my pc so I can put them on my phone?

I just want some input on what i should do. i realize this is the droid forum so im probably going to get some biased answers from people, but i am looking for some good feedback. basically, im tired of going back and forth between trying to decide if i should keep the eris or go to the droid (or wait for something better). the factors i am looking for in the phone are the following:
-fast system that can compete with today's best smartphones
-longevity of the phone (meaning once i get on the 2-year, i won't regret it because something far outdoes this phone)
-best internet experience possible
-"bring it all with you" design, meaning, i want it to be an all-in-one unit that can do basically anything on the go.
-i do not want a budget phone, i want power to do things.
what can you guys say about these factors compared to the eris? im especially interested in the longevity for i do not want to be outdone by some new smartphone so quickly with a 2-year contract. is the moto droid going be around for awhile? on a final note--design. i chose the eris because when i went to verizon i saw it and it looked so much more slick. and its a beauty.....

So I finally DL'ed the root explorer app just so I could move the su file and update to 2.2. Well after I longpressed the su file and selected move, I went back to /system/xbin to paste it. I selected paste and it told me that I "Cannot paste here because the file system is read only." What? Is no one else having this issue?

After many weeks of waiting and my fiasco almost switching to an Incredible, my X finally arrived today. I'm new to the forum but have been reading around since ordering my phone. I don't intend to root at the moment because it's not what i need and I want to see how I like froyo. I will be using launcher pro but I really want these, or similar, dock icons but can't seem to locate them. I don't need to root or anything to get the completely transparent dock background do I? And for those with macs, what do you feel that the best way to move things between your phone and mac are? I plan on using double twist unless someone can mention something they feel is better!
