Motorola Droid :: SMS Vs Data - Applications Such As Meebo
Nov 27, 2009
When does the Droid use SMS?
When does the Droid use Data?
For applications such as Meebo, I'm reading that each message on an IM client counts as a text (Instant messaging counts as text messaging?) . However, I'm also reading otherwise. So is something like Meebo on Data or SMS? I got only 500 texts because I thought it was data.

I just did a search on the market for meebo and ebuddy and came back with nothing. I saw them there a week ago. Have they been taken off? Is it just me or can other people find them on the market?

I've noticed that my Facebook chat rarely stays logged in on MeeboIM app. Is it something I'm doing wrong? I use the "talk" google thing for one of my accounts [not tied to my facebook], then my facebook tied to another. How can I get it to stay logged in?

I'm starting to develop an application for Google Android and heavily relying on a web API that can deliver data in a restful way via json or xml. I now have to decide which library to choose.
I saw that google includes org.json classes in the API but haven't tested them yet.
How are your experiences? What library/API should I use and why?

Meebo, the free IM app is now available for download in the andriod market place.
I've been using www.meebo.com to IM on AIM, MSN, and GTalk with 1 logon and without any download (at work mostly heh) for a while now and I have nothing but praise for it.
Now they're created an app that does the same thing for the G1.
If you'd going to try it out, I'd recommend setting up your accounts on the computer/website first (really easy) that way it's ready to go when you DL the app for the phone.
I'm using it, it works, check it out if you need an all-in-one IM client.

I want to backup my application's data in Android Cloud's Storage. I have some questions regarding this,
1) To backup the data it needs Backup Transport. What will happen if the Backup Transport is not present on the Android device?
2) Will Android Backup Service provides any Backup Transport(if not available on the device) when the application get registered with the Android Backup Service?
3) How to store the data present in the SQLite database to Cloud's storage?
4) If i distribute my application to many users. In that case how the data backup will happen?? How the Android Backup Service will get the primary google account present on the device if it contains more than one google account?

I want to share data between 2 applications. the idea is both applications can write and read the SAME data and there is no dependency which one of the apps is installed or first created the data. I have 2 version of the same app: regular and premium and I don't know which of them will be first installed and both of them can change it.I tried to use ContentProvider but the problem is that only the first app can create the Provider and when it is uninstalled it deletes that custom Provider. I want the Content to be kept for the second app. Also, I tried to use Settings.System which keeps the data regardless if the application is installed or not but I don't want to use the permission for that (it is very problematic from user perspective). BTW, it seems that I can change ANY of the Settings.System which is not secured from Android OS perspective - but this is a subject for other post.

I know that I can put applications on my SD card now that the phone is rooted (very easily using Liquid Frozen Yogurt). Anyways, what I was wondering is if I put all my apps on my SD card, what happens when/if I reflash my ROM? Will I have to wipe the SD card, reinstall the Apps and reback them up top the SD card? Or does it install once the SD card with the programs is inserted?

This was in the Android Forum News, but I wanted to link it here. For those who have received the OTA and/or forced the update, apparently, the update has caused the DROID to experience performance problems, particularly in the area of 2D apps. What used to return 60fps is now being halved (30fps). Here is the link to the article: Droid 2.1 Update Causing Performance Problems? | Android Phone Fans.

I go to "Settings" and then "Applications". Once in "Applications", I go to "Running Services" and turn off certain applications I am not using. How long are these applications supposed to stay off: Until I turn my phone back on again? Until I turn my display back on? I am trying to improve my battery life. I have turned off the background data and uninstalled the app killer. My display goes off after 30 seconds and I already have the brightness as low as it goes (I do this on every phone, I see no need to have a crazy bright screen).

Got my X today and after playing with it for a while and moving apps over I had worn the fully charged battery down to 30%. I decided to go ahead and make the old droid call quality trick of switching to ERV-B, after which the phone resets. The weird part is that the battery came back to 70% after the reset.

Today I purchased a higher capacity micro sd card. There is a similar thread but no info on apps that are instaled to the card. If I just copy everything to the new card will the apps still work? Or do I need to move all the apps to the phone and just transfer my media, bookmarks etc?

is anyone else having trouble in the application launcher where the applications arent sorting alphabetically? I can't figure out how to sort...I would have thought this was a default....not sure if it's because I restored my apps using MyBackUp Pro or not.

How are you restoring your apps?
Titanium Backup?
Astro?
Manual?
If manual, do you keep a list of which apps you've got installed so that you can restore them more easily? Does anyone restore /data from 2.0.1? Or will that just cause more problems? I've used Astro in the past, but not for ROM purposes. And I've got Titanium installed, but have never used it. It seems like there are several options but I've yet to hear of any preferred option from anyone. Look forward to getting in on this ERE25 action!

Im on the Rom manager 2.1. It's been working for days now and I backup my roms pretty much every day. Today I installed a new app Vlingo and my apps disappeared off my home screen. I restored from 2 days ago, but I'm getting the same thing. The apps load at first, but within 5 minutes, they go away. Then, if I apply some apps on the now empty screens, they will be on top of the old ones when I reboot.
