Motorola Droid :: OpenVPN Connections
Nov 10, 2009
Several threads have indicated that the Droid supports OpenVPN connections, but for the life of me, I can't figure out how to configure this. The only VPN option that even looks close is "Add L2TP/IPSec CRT VPN", but I can't figure out how to load the user and CA certificates...hell, I don't even know if this is the correct option for an OpenVPN connection.

Can the Droid be connected to two bluetooth sources at once?
For example:
I am always connected to a parrot handsfree bluetooth car kit when in my car. But I also want to be able to stream music via bluetooth to a separate bluetooth dongle attached to my stereo receiver.

I just recently started using pdanet when my high speed internet connection at home was having issues. Oddly i found it to be very fast and work pretty flawlessly from my droid. My question is during the summer i have a 2nd home which has no option for high speed connections, but does get 3g Verizon. I mostly would use my laptop for reading emails and teaching online classes through my college. Has anyone on Verizon ever had issues using bandwidth through a tethered device as i described? I know there is this on going battle of whether our unlimited plans are truly unlimited or not. I would not use massive loads of data but i do not want to incur problems with my service either. Love to hear your opinions.

Does KaosFroyo v34 have SetCPU built in? Or is it even compatible with this kernel? If yes, where do I find it? I really want to tweak things to see if I can get this battery to last longer.
Also, any idea how to set a CA/user certificates in: Settings>Wireless & Networks>VPN Settings>Add VPN>Add OpenVPN VPN (when I select either of those, the only option I have is "Cancel")

I'm a new droid user and have tried desperately to disable all data connections.I'm without a data plan so I feel very unsafe just going on the net or using the apps I downloaded, afraid that it might accidentally use data connections.I've tried disabling the 2G network, data roaming, background data (what is it anyway) and even going to the key pad, typing *#*#4636#*#* to disable the data connection and data on boot up. I'm left with disabling the APN but don't know how to. And the thing that worries me is that I am unable to go to the Android Market because I will need to enable the background data which I'm afraid that will cause $. And also, I don't know if doing all that will be effective.

Download a terminal client, e.g. ConnectBot and connect to your local shell.Enter `su` to become root. (Double check with whoami afterwards). Enable wifi tethering and ensure your data connection is working (connect to VPN)
Run `netcfg` and note your interface names (typically tun0 and wlan0 (ignore m.wlan0 or similar, only take the one with a real mac address), as is on my SGSII)..Double check the subnet for your wlan0 device and enter the following commands:
iptables -A POSTROUTING -s 192.168.43.0/24 -j MASQUERADE -t nat
(setup a postrouting entry for the tethered devices subnet, implementing NAT)
iptables -A FORWARD -j ACCEPT -i wlan0 -o tun0
forward packets from tethered devices across the tunnel
iptables -A FORWARD -j ACCEPT -i tun0 -o wlan0
forward packets from the tunnel to the tethered devices
Note, because you are using NAT, you will need to configure port forwards on your Android device to be able to run servers etc on tethered devices. Unlikely you'll need to worry about that though. Feedback if it worked or not. Posting this now from my home IP, OpenVPN for Android and these iptable rules!

Is it possible to write a in-app openvpn connection (via streams and sockets)? If it is, then is there any android application which managed that already? I have also problems finding in-depth openvpn protocol description.

Been trying to get OpenVPN to work properly and have not had much luck.
Here are my specs.
HTC Incredible
Virtuous v3.1.0
2.6.32-Hydra-ssuv-v05
OpenVPN binary has been installed. I have also install busybox and then softlinked ifconfig and route to the commands the same way CM6 has it.
I was able to get OpenVPN to work properly within CM6 without much hassle. I have found battery life and experience better for me with Virtuous ROM so I went back to it.
When I launch the connection to establish the VPN session it connects but I am not able to work within the network. I was not able to communicate even with the VPN server.
I ran a netcfg and discovered that tap0 was down. I brought it up but its routing table was empty. I filled it in and was able to communicate with the VPN server and my advertised networks. If I drop my VPN connection, tap0 goes down and the routing table is cleared.
The VPN server works. It works with my other boxes and worked with this phone under CM6.

I have searched for this for a while now and have not found what I was looking for (if something like this even exists). Is there an SDK of some sort or a package program that would basically give a place on a server for a database and a membership system that is easily integrated into a android app I am developing? Something that would connect the users in my app like they do in instagram, or words with friends, or pretty much any other multiplayer game. (i am not looking for a facebook connect, or a twitter connect. just something that connects just my app together so to speak)

I've written an application which involves a lot of simultaneous connections to different servers. I've noticed some big stability issues with this as sometimes the program crashes totally (not just ANR, but a segfault type thing). What's the recommended number of maximum simultaneous connections for speed and stability?

Is there any option that makes it so the phone connects automatically when its required? For example, I open up the internet browser or an app that requires a connection and it starts the Internet connection without me having to do it manually? And is there a way of it disconnecting automatically when the connection is idle? Also, on my phone, when I am connected, I only ever see H, E and G but never 3G. I am on o2 in the UK, can anyone tell me why I'm not seeing 3G?

For the buzzer round, I was thinking of writing 2 app for android (we have a few handsets), one for the quiz master and the other for the contestants. The contestants will be connected to the quiz master through bluetooth. After reading the question, the quiz-master clicks a button in his/her app, the button in the contestant apps will be enabled for X seconds. As soon as a contestant clicks his/her button, the quiz master's app will flash the name of that contestant. Is it even possible to have multiple connections and accept concurrent (or multiplexed) messages from them in bluetooth (something similar to select() in unix/c)?If possible, where should I look for any examples? What kind of problems will I face trying to develop this (I know reliability is an issue here) and how to avoid them?

I'm hoping someone could help me out with intermittent connections I'm getting using code with HttpsURLConnection.
The code I'm using is below:
CODE:...............
The connection works the first time everytime when I use it to pull a json file. However, when I use the connection again to send a command, it always fails the first time. It then typically works if I send the
command quickly ( within 5 seconds), but fails if I wait a while. I don't think its a SSL issue because it connects the first time correctly, but I could be wrong here. I also tried many different
variations such as adding:
CODE:.............
However, I had no luck. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I am looking for an app that can:
- make a log of all the other apps, including stock ones, that make attempts or actual connections to the internet, and at what time
- be able to intercept those connections
- preferably I would create a white list of apps that are allowed to connect, but others do not have permission.
Purposes include:
- saving on bandwidth in poorer countries where internet is expensive.
- making sure apps or malware doesn't try to send off my data when it shouldn't be.
- prevent annoying background sync/apps from running when I don't want them
I find it strange that we either give all the permissions the app wants, or it doesn't work. Why can't we restrict their internet access?
Does this sound feasible? Does it already exist?
I'm rooted and using an Asus Transformer.

I have a Star A3 running 2.3.4
I am running Ttorrent Pro on the phone, and the speeds are less than impressive (everyone else says the same thing) I am on a very fast connection, using speed guide I literally max out the speedtest servers in my local area (20Mb up/down which is the max they let you go to, I would get 100/100 if my speedtest server would allow it) and I have a port forwarded correctly.
but anyways, what I have noticed is, when wake the phone, and open the torrent application the speeds are down to around 3Kbps if I leave it open the speeds immediately start ramping up to 200-300Kbps if I keep it awake.
So this makes me think, when the phone is sleeping a lot of the connections are being closed, or when the phone is asleep it won't try and open new connections to new peers (and the current peer list may go stale while its asleep)
this is with all torrents, now the exact same torrent on another PC with a DSL connection (3Mb down 300Kb up) is downloading faster than the phone.
Are there any developers out there than can explain what processes are going to sleep that may be useful to keep awake for downloading, and also what are the tcp limits on the phone, ie. max open connections, max half open etc?

After rooting my Incredible, I installed the only application that I needed from the root....VPN Connections 0.99
I am trying to connect to a Cisco ASA 5520, and as far as I know this is the only application that will allow group and shared secret.
As soon as you try to connect to a configured VPN server, I get the message:
Sorry! The application VPN Connections (process org.codeandroid.vpnc_frontend) has stopped unexpectedly. Please try again.

This just popped up my on my twitter. Y5 Battery Saver Keeps Wi-Fi On Only Near Trusted Spot. When you connect to wifi, it'll remember the rough location (without GPS). Periodically it'll tap back into that location and if you are near it it'll flip on WiFi so you can connect. If you aren't near an area you've connected too before, it'll keep wifi off.

I have some code that uses a network connection. I create a connection by calling openConnection() on a URL object. Is there any documentation that explains how this process works? Which access point is being used? When that access point becomes invalid, will it automatically switch to another accespoint? etc. I would like to use only WiFi access points and otherwise fail even tho 3G or GPRS could be available, is that possible?

I am working on developing an application that requires me to establish multiple client-server based connections. Connection can be of two types where the Android device can be a server or a client. I can have up to 6 - 8 connections. Once the connections are set-up they need to be running in the background and are not typically affected by UI actions.Since each connection can be blocking, I am wondering what is a good away to design this app. Should I have two services for handling the server and client connections? Each service could have a "connection manager" that can spawn new threads when necessary. Or does creating two services even help? I presume spawning new processed would not be good as they will be expensive. Is this correct? I would appreciate any suggestions. Also, if this use case is not typical please let me know if you need more information to make any recommendation.
