Motorola Droid :: Keyboard Improvements Gone After Rooted
Feb 14, 2010
I rooted my phone yesterday for the first time. It seems like the on-screen keyboard is back to the way it was before the 2.0.1 update. My typing is missing a lot of letters when I type fast and it isn't responding as well with multiple touches. Does rooting the phone take away the improvements from the 2.0.1 update? My keyboard was flawless before the root.

Has anyone noticed improvement to the call quality and echo issues that many of us have had with the Droid. I have force/updated today and as yet the problems have not recurred.

I got an Android device specifically for Google integration, since my employer uses Google for 50% of our work (email, calendar, chat). Yet bizarrely, Android's Gmail app seems to be the weakest point of their platform.
IMHO (and please not let this become some kind of fanboy bashfest of someone trying to put in constructive criticism here):
The "Reply," "Reply All," and "Forward" buttons are very inconvenient -- at the bottom of the message, rather than a toolbar of some kind. This means that when I want to respond to one of those interminable email chains, I have to scroll past wads of old crap to reply. I've had intermittent success with forwarding attachments. It seems unpredictable when an attachment will forward and when it won't. Can someone shed some light into when it works? I suspect it has something to do with Outlook or other clients that attach files in non-standard ways. Very limited offline functionality. I would really prefer if there were an IMAP mode so I can review email while offline (e.g. on the plane or underground). Specific to the Droid: The D-Pad has so much potential, but instead all it does is jump from link to link in an email, which I do not find intuitive at all. At a minimum I'd think that the D-Pad would let you scroll; ideally, I'd like to see the D-Pad help solve the first problem described above (lack of access to the reply and forward buttons) so enough whining from me. I'd appreciate any solutions to the above (and "Shut up and deal with it" is not appreciated). It could be keystroke shortcuts I'm not aware of, apps that work better than the default Gmail program, pending app updates that take advantage of the Droid's unique hardware, etc.

I tried it and it works so far.
Dev = ne0fhyk from XDA.
From the XDA forum: Link to app page = [APP][ROOT/Keyboard] Keyboard Manager - Dual keyboard: Portrait/landscape switch - xda-developers
Verbage:
Keyboard Manager allows you to customize what keyboard (input method) appear on input based on your phone orientation.
It displays the keyboards you have enabled on your android device, and let you select one per orientation (landscape/portrait).
As your phone switch orientation, the app automatically switch the keyboard.
Requirements:
- Rooted android device (app was tested on Samsung captivate 2.1)
- Root Explorer app, or similar app that allows you to edit the permissions of a file.
To install:
1- Download the app (KeyboardManager.apk) on your device sdcard.
2- Using Root Explorer, move the apk file to /system/app
3- Using Root Explorer, edit the file permissions like below:
-- User: 'Read/Write' checked
--Group: 'Read' checked
--Others: 'Read' checked
4- Exit Root Explorer
The app should be visible in your launcher as 'Keyboard Manager'
Update:
- Added option to disable notification icon
-' start on boot' feature is disabled because it's not yet complete and tested... Sorry for the confusion
Bugs:
-On certain applications (i.e: Messaging on Samsung Captivate), the input window occasionally freeze on orientation switch. Exiting the app, and resuming should fix it.
The app is still in development.

Currently I have an Eris with v3 Leak meaning I can't root. But my wife loves my phone so I plan on giving her mine and either getting another eris and rooting or a Moto Droid and rooting. I've been trying to read up on the Droid and the different ROMS available and have some questions.First I want to make a few things clear:
1. This IS NOT a phone comparison.
2. The Incredilble IS NOT an option since it can't be rooted and I don't want to spend $200 on it.
3. I'm looking for WELL INFORMED OPINIONS, if you don't have one keep moving there is nothing to see here.
To be fair I've obviously done a lot more reading on the Eris which is why I'm looking for well informed opinions from Droid owners that way I can make a well informed decision.

Dont get me wrong, the QWERTY keyboard is sick, and I love it. But after typing on the keyboard for while, I wanted to switch it up, so I tried the on screen key pad. And to my surprise, the on screen keyboard appears to be much quicker than using the QWERTY!

Well, it's being reported, however not confirmed that the Droid Incredible has finally been rooted. He's also reporting that he's OCed to 1.5GHz.What's more he's working on 2GHz.Good Lord, could you imagine?I've been saying that as of right now, based on personal preference, that a rooted Droid is the best option. But this will def start to sway opinions, including mine.

One thing that SEVERELY bugs me about Android is that this "Google Experience" is better executed by other means and on other platforms than on an Android handset.
I've used the Moment and Hero - both 1.5.
My biggest problem is with Gmail - the app is pretty bad (IMO) - and if you want easier access and better features and UI you have to use the browser and go to the mobile gmail site.
I can't download or attach anything but a photo with the app. I can't copy/paste with the app (well technically I can but its execution is so tricky it's worthless). These things can be done on the mobile site.
Is the Gmail app improved with 2.x?

Has anyone noticed improvements to the Hero camcorder video quality under Android 2.1? I thought I remember hearing that the upgrade might improve this. It's not a big deal, but I was hoping the recorded video would be smoother than the 15 fps under the 1.5 OS. I don't see a difference, but wanted to hear some other opinions.

I just saw a write-up for this app on another Android site and decided to kick the tires (well, that was the plan anyway).I downloaded the app from XDA using the SWM and all seemed fine. However, I can't get the app to open for more than a couple of seconds before it goes Force-Close-crazy on me. I rebooted the phone twice and still no luck.Incidentally, the purpose of the app -for those not familiar with it yet- is to give you the ability to lock your phone into a certain type of keyboard depending on the phone's orientation (e.g. Portrait = always Swype, Landscape = Always Android keypad, etc.).Has anyone else tried this app yet and have you gotten it to work?

Since everyone says that 2.2 is a lot faster than 2.1, does that include the music player also?
I like the stock music player (although i have the incredible, so it is the sense music player), i like all the features it has (delete songs, playlists, full lock screen support, etc.
The only thing i don't like its that its way slow when going to the list (either artist, all songs, genre). I have over 2500 songs so i know this is the reason, but im just hoping that once we get the upgrade the speed will be more acceptable.
Other than that does anyone know of a third party app that has lockscreen art, and all the basic functionality of the stock music player but performs faster when viewing the list? I've tried all I could find, mixzing, doubletwist, museek, cubed, astro media player, vanilla music player, meridian, btunes, and some other ones I can't remember now but they all have something missing from the stock media player.

I have not really found any threads in these forums deticated just to overclocking the Droid. I am running BB v.9 and would like to overclock past 600 mhz. I have 2 overclocking utilities. (Setcpu, and overclock widget) I understand that I have to update or flash the Kernel. I tried doing this OverClocking Motorola Droid To 1.3 GHz In 7 Easy Steps | areacellphone.com
The adb commands were successfull. WHen I rebooted my droid it was bricked (well not really cause I did a Nandroid backup right before I did this) It was just frozen with the white Motorola logo. Perhaps I downloaded a bad 800 mhz evilboot8.img.

I just ran a anti virus program and it says I am rooted. I do not want to be rooted. I did click on the shole updater but I never opened it up because I am a chickenshit and know my limitations. I thought the scan found the download and assumed I was rooted so I deleted the download ( I never opened or saw any type of process). AV still says I am rooted. How can I look to see if I am or not rooted?

I'm a bit noobish since this is my first Android phone, so please forgive me. I rooted my Droid X running 2.1 using the GUI program. I used Root Explorer to rename a few bloatware apps. I did not make any other changes, just installed Titanium Backup and used it to make a backup. To successfully install the OTA update to 2.2, what do I need to do? I read that I need to restore the bloatware. Do I also need to unroot first? I've also read in a couple places something about moving Superuser.apk from bin to xbin. Is that what I need to do to stay rooted in 2.2?

So (as far as I can tell) I've successfully rooted.I've been searching around and trying to install SPRecovery so I can backup using nandroid or whatever and install ROMs, with no luck. Is SPRecovery a file I need to download after rooting? If so, where can I find it? And after backing up, where do I find and how to I install ROMs?I know I'm probably posing questions that have been answered, but in this forum and elsewhere I cannot seem to find a simple, step-by-step set of instructions of what to do after initially rooting.

Howdy gang: Back in the 2.0.1 days, I rooted my droid, using the "root your droid.com" guide. I never did anything with it, never loaded any Roms (planed on it, just never got around to it) When 2.1 came out, I did the OTA. After the OTA, I still have the "super user" ninja icon. Now I want to jump on the 2.2 bandwagon and I need root. But do I still have root? how can I tell?

Hey everyone. So a couple of weeks ago i took the plunge and rooted and haven't looked back. I wanted to get rid of my ipod for the gym seeing as i carry my phone anyway so i spent a few hours making playlist (i have over 20gb of music to go through) and used isyncr to put them on the droid. Great app by the way. Anyway so i tryed to pair my bluetooth headphones to the droid and it just scanned and never found the headphones. I tried like 20 times and yes i had the phone discoverable. So i had my Lt. at work try it on his android phone and the hooked right up. Is there something that could have happen in the root that messed up my bluetooth. Running sholes 2.0.6. Went to droid mod1 but it was killing my battery so i went back to sholes. Any help would be great.
