Motorola Droid :: Improvements To Gmail App - Reply - Reply All And Forward Buttons Very Inconvenient
Dec 10, 2009
I got an Android device specifically for Google integration, since my employer uses Google for 50% of our work (email, calendar, chat). Yet bizarrely, Android's Gmail app seems to be the weakest point of their platform.
IMHO (and please not let this become some kind of fanboy bashfest of someone trying to put in constructive criticism here):
The "Reply," "Reply All," and "Forward" buttons are very inconvenient -- at the bottom of the message, rather than a toolbar of some kind. This means that when I want to respond to one of those interminable email chains, I have to scroll past wads of old crap to reply. I've had intermittent success with forwarding attachments. It seems unpredictable when an attachment will forward and when it won't. Can someone shed some light into when it works? I suspect it has something to do with Outlook or other clients that attach files in non-standard ways. Very limited offline functionality. I would really prefer if there were an IMAP mode so I can review email while offline (e.g. on the plane or underground). Specific to the Droid: The D-Pad has so much potential, but instead all it does is jump from link to link in an email, which I do not find intuitive at all. At a minimum I'd think that the D-Pad would let you scroll; ideally, I'd like to see the D-Pad help solve the first problem described above (lack of access to the reply and forward buttons) so enough whining from me. I'd appreciate any solutions to the above (and "Shut up and deal with it" is not appreciated). It could be keystroke shortcuts I'm not aware of, apps that work better than the default Gmail program, pending app updates that take advantage of the Droid's unique hardware, etc.

I've been using my Droid for about a week now and would like some suggestions or help with three frustrations I have with the default Gmail app in 2.0:
1. The Reply/Forward buttons are all the way at the bottom of the message - which is very frustrating when you're trying to respond to a long email thread that has a billion embedded replies. How are you dealing with that, other than scrolling all the way to the bottom? Shouldn't reply/forward buttons be available on-screen at all times? (The hardware option button doesn't present "reply" or "forward" among the popup choices, either).
2. When I forward mail with attachments, I can't predict whether the attachments will forward or not. So far, it seems like they don't go through more often than not. Is there a setting somewhere I need to throw to make attachments work reliably?

I'm on a rooted D1. I've had this problem w/ the last couple rooted ROMs. When I reply to a person's email it gets stuck in the outbox. The other day I happened to check it and there were 9 messages in there from the past 3 days that never were sent. I type the message and hit send, but it's never sent. It keeps saying 'sending' I had this problem today w/ SS 4.7 and prior to that had a problem a few days ago w/ ultimate droid and also whatever other ROM I was using last week. I can't remember. I am pretty sure I went to apps, gmail and cleared data and that didn't help.

Unless it is just my settings, when I text I can send a text and receive a quick reply and can reply back and forth. However, if I back out of messaging (go to main screen to any other app) the reply that I receive has lost the area code prefix and my replies will not be delivered. All my contacts have been entered with the 10 digit number but like I said, if I leave the messaging session after my first send, the contact number is truncated to 7 digits.

Every now and then when I get a text and try to reply, none of the letter buttons will work. From what I've tried, the only way to fix it is to exit all the way out of the messaging application and go back in. The buttons will animate like they are being pushed, vibrate, and even show swype trails and word suggestions, but none of my words will show up on the screen.
I haven't figured out the specific instances when this happens. It seems a little random but I think it may only happen when I lock the screen without leaving the messaging application first, I get a text, and try to reply immediately from the app. But I'm really not sure - it might just be random.

right, have had my hero for several months and only this week gmail has started playing up. I receive emails however when I delete this is not actually reflected in my account and still there when I logon via internet. That means volume count of messages remain high and eventually they return back into my gmail account on the phone. When I try and reply to an email it simply states "sending" without actually sending. Not sure if this is ROM specific, I have used a couple now with the same issue (Villain 10.3 + Superhero 2 - although admittedly they have been authored by the same people).

I've seen the video for the Nexus One handling multiple Gmail accounts, that's fantastic, but what it does not show me, and what is killing me about my Eris, is that there is no "Reply As" drop down menu like there is in the regular Gmail app for Desktop OS. Ex. I have 3 email accounts (Hotmail, Work and Gmail) that I have setup on my Eris. Currently, the only one getting pushed to my phone is Gmail, which means that the other two are constantly polling for messages and causing a drain of battery, not to mention the hassle of having to enter into different mailboxes, apps to retrieve mail. I would love to be able to have my Gmail pop those other accounts and label them accordingly so that I can receive all my mail via Push from Gmail, saving on battery and making email management on my phone much easier.
However, this is not a possibility for me simply because I need to be able to Reply As the account that the msg was originally sent. Ex. Someone sends an email to my work email, and I'm on the road. I need to reply as me@work.com, not me@gmail.com. That would be really confusing to the sender, not to mention unprofessional for me. I've read some work arounds where some people have Gmail setup the way i described above, but also have their sep mail accounts setup on their phone w/ the Auto Polling set to manual. That way, they can manage their email in Gmail, but if they need to reply to one from a specific account, they open up the Mail for that account, manually refresh and find the msg and reply. Also, the built-in Mail apps have no ability to do batch operations such as "Mark as read" or "Delete all" functionaility, GMail does.
So, I can't be pumping through 30 emails a day w/o this feature. I'm doing it now on my Eris and trust me, it's more work that it's worth. I'm not one of those people that can just leave the Mail Icon sitting there with a number on it. It has to go away. Otherwise, I don't know if/when another email comes in. It could be important. This is especially important to me because I'm an IT Professional, and, not only do I need to get my email in a timely manner (Push is instant and therefore ideal), but I need to be able to reply as such. I've been looking at alternatives, but this seems to be the only/best way, and I'm really hoping that it's built-in to Gmail on Android 2.1, like it is on the Desktop OS version.

So I've been using SMS Popup lately, but I've learned that it doesn't play well with the stock messaging application on the Droid X. It will send text messages that have been sent for a whole day back to certain contacts. Anyway, I've just been wondering what else is a good application for quick reply? I love the interface of the standard messaging application. Sure, I wish I could change some colours, but I'm not going to worry about it as it works flawlessly for me. I just wish more people would start adding a quick reply feature with a feature to turn it off for those that don't care for it. So has anyone come across any good applications like SMS Popup? I'm not really willing to go to Handcent or Chomp when stock app works just perfectly.

I have a bit of a dilliema when it comes to texting on this phone. I am coming from a BB curve. I run a small business and I schedule my employees through text message. I do so 10+ employees at a time. The problem I have found with Handcent and Chomp, is that if I message 10 people "Work Thursday at 315" when they reply to confirm, it doesnt show my original message, so I have no idea what they are confirming because Im often sending out many different times to many different people. Now, the stock messaging app DOES show my original message when they reply, but the sort order is all screwed up.

Since I got the original 2.2 update for my Droid, whenever I get a new text message and slide down the notification bar and select the new message, it takes me to the main text message window rather than the actual thread to reply to the person. It is really annoying because it requires an extra step. I figured it would be fixed with the second 2.2 update but it didn't. I called Verizon and they called Motorola and nobody knew of the problem so they shipped me out a new phone and it still does it! I am not sure if I am the only one experiencing this or if its normal. It doesn't do it 100% of the time but closer to 90% probably.

Anyone else have problems using the gmail app, when I hit reply sometimes it does not resister the tap. The word "reply" lights up and sometimes I have to push it three times before it will open the reply window. No other apps give me this problem so it is not my touch throwing it off it is the app. Cant uninstall it since it is part of the core.

Ive got a really annoying bug with a contact on my phone using the default SMS app. I can text him no problem, but if he sends me a message and I try and reply I get a text from my carrier T-Mobile UK saying the number I am sending to is incorrect because it is missing the +.
For example say the contacts number is +4412345678 it is stored in my phonebook as "+4412345678". But when I reply the SMS client sends it to "4412345678" which is not correct as it is missing the +
If I change the contacts number to 0712345678 when I reply it still fails as it tries to send the text to 712345678.
Its totally random and confusing it also missed out the first number or +. I have tried deleting the contact all together but even then when repying it always forgets to put the "+". Its only the default SMS client which does this and it only happens with one contact. If I use Handcent it works ok but I would prefer to use the default client if possible.

Let me make this clear up front- this is with the HTC mail client and connecting via an exchange account. I have replied to messages, attaching documents and pictures but the recipient does not get them. However when I send the document or picture in a new email and they get it. Am I missing something? I have searched on many forums and do not see where anyone has complained of this before. Any guidance would be greatly appreciated. For now, I am going to try Touchdown to see if this remedies the problem.

Is GoSms the only sms app that has pop up with reply feature? None other I've found has this feature. I love apex too much to switch to Go Launcher.
Popup SMS is nice, but it doesn't have a reply feature on the pop up window, worse part is, it doesn't even have a button to go to the message. Only button to go to inbox and then having to click on the message.

I understand how to create a new message and send it to multiple recipients...but...how do I send a reply from one recipient to multiple people?
Example:
Incoming text from 555-1234: "It's a boy!"
Reply: "Congrats!" <-- will only respond to 555-1234
I would prefer to have something like:
Incoming from 555-1234: "It's a boy!"
Reply to 555-1234 and 2 other people: "Congrats on your new baby boy, 555-1234!"
Can't seem to figure out how to add additional recipients on the response.

This is more of an annoyance, but whenever I reply to a message off the home screen widget, it automatically defaults to the home number for that contact, instead of replying to the same (cell) number that it was sent from. If I go into the messaging app, it works as it should (replies to the same number).

So when I send someone a picture/video through messaging and they reply, there is a download button. When i touch that it says "downloading" for about 1 second and then a message pops up saying "Download of message Re: New Message from *friend's name* was unsuccessful." I have wi-fi and cell service so I don't know why it won't download. I'm assuming they are replying with text but either way nothing is downloading.

A while back I was looking through either the stock messaging app or Handcent and saw an option to auto reply to text messages, and you could change the text to make it say whatever you needed it to say. Today I tried looking for that option again and didn't find anything. I searched on the forum but only found other apps that I would need to install in order to do this. Hopefully someone knows what option I am talking about or uses it. If not, I can always use Tasker to do this, but prefer to use the messaging apps.Edit: So I found the answer about 30 seconds after posting this. Only for missed calls.Text option when dismissing a call

When I forward/reply from gmail on my phone, it doesn't retain the whole email chain. It just cuts the text off somewhere down the line.
