Using ACTION_SEND it's possible to post messages to various sharing services such as gmail, facebook, twitter, etc. Most services have reasonably long message lengths, but twitter in particular is very short (140 characters).
Not knowing in advance which service a user is going to select once the Intent.createChooser() dialog appears, is there a way to construct an intent that will result in a short message for twitter but a longer message for other services?

I've noticed today that sending a picture messages takes a loong time on my Droid--considerably longer than on my old feature phone. Usually, it takes around 3-4 minutes. One picture took around 10 minutes to send. My apartment has bad reception, but when I sent these messages I had 3g and 3 reception bars. Is this normal?

I'm having an issue where I open g mail message and (especially for long messages) as I am reading the message, I am kicked out of the message and back to my in box. It makes it really difficult to get through the entire message, but it is not very consistent. Sometimes I can stay on the message for ever and sometimes it just bumps me out. Anyone else noticing something like this from time to time?

I have a question regarding syncing and g mail. I have only had the phone for a few hours, and I love it, but I am a little frustrated. I have setup my Google Mail, Contact, and Calendar and everything works great until I try to delete a goggle mail from my phone. When I delete the msg from the phone, it deletes the msg from the g mail server. I DO NOT want this to happen. I have looked into g mail and the settings, along with the settings on the phone. I have also tried to create filters, and I still have the same results. Is it possible to only do a "one way" sync? I do not want to lose msgs off my g mail. Am I doing something wrong, or am I just missing something?

im not an expert on how push email works, but my understanding is that gmail messages should appear on my phone without me having to refresh or manually sync the gmail app. for a reason unknown to me, sometimes this works and sometimes it doesnt. at night, i shut down wifi and the mobile network to conserve battery and start up the mobile network when i leave for work in the morning. i get notification of new yahoo email, thru the htc widget, almost instantaneously, yet gmail doesnt come thru until i manually sync the gmail app. then during the course of the day, sometimes gmail messages get pushed right thru and other times not at all until i manually sync the app. meanwhile my yahoo mail comes thru flawlessly.
considering gmail is supposed to push and the htc widget does not, this is the opposite of what i expect. as far as settings, i have auto sync enabled for both the device and for the gmail app. while i always assume user error until proven otherwise, in this instance i think i have all the correct settings, which makes sense considering sometimes gmail does get pushed. its just erratic and unpredictable. anybody got any ideas what's going on here?

I get my gmail on my Droid, but I also like to keep the messages on my home computer too. Sometimes the messages I get on my phone also come to my computer after I check them on the phone, and others do not. Is there a way to make sure they are not deleted from the gmail server after they are received on the phone so I can also get them at home? It is odd that sometimes they come through but not always.

I just noticed something that is quite annoying in the native gmail app. If you "reply" to an email, but change the address you are replying to, you lose the ability to see the original message of the thread on your Droid. Here is an example. A friend of mine, Jane, was organizing a ski trip and sent out and email to the 20 people that were going with the details (dates, addresses, prices, contact info, etc). I replied to the email, but changed the address to John's email, because he was going to be driving me and I didn't want to reply to all. John and I continued the thread with multiple messages back and forth to setup details of when we were leaving. In all versions of g mail (on both my desktop and my Droid), I see "Jane, Me, John (8) >> ski trip details..." for this thread. When I am in the browser version of g mail (either desktop or the Droid browser) I can click on the thread and see all 8 messages. However, in the native g mail app on the Droid, I click on the thread, see the last message, and behind that it only says "6 read messages" (there should be 7 more) and when I expand them, Jane's original message is the one missing. The thread comes up though when I search for Jane's email address or any of the text within Jane's original email. But I can't read it.

Just curious, it's taking some serious getting used to this phone but I have a question about the messages box. Why is it that I have an separate icon for GMAIL, EMAIL , and MESSAGES? Why is Gmail separate from the "email" icon? and why can't I have my email and gmail as an icon in my messages box which currently houses the universal inbox, facebook, and twitter, and text messaging?

I have encountered a strange issue. I received two emails from the same source with similar (but not quite the same) subject. Both show up fine in my gmail inbox (as expected) on a browser, but if I use the gmail app on the Droid X, it only shows the most recent message. The two messages were received about 3 days apart, the content of the message is different, but the from address is the same and the subject line is similar (just a few #'s different).

If I have several messages in a thread, I am not able to see the entire message. Basically the most recent message is truncated and I have to search all previous messages to try and understand the thread. Is there a way to show the entire text from previous messages while ready the current message in the thread?

To clean the inbox of my HTC I often erase all messages. However, this action is synced to gmail and erases the messages. I don't want that; I want them to stay in the inbox (forever) Is there a setting that disables the sync action?

I've got an app that lets users send sms messages. Works great when the message < 160 characters. After that, things work less-perfectly. Seems like there are a few options here:
Manually break the message up into multiple SMSs, send each part as a separate SMS. Use the multi-part send SMS function (sendMultipartTextMessage()). Send the message as an MMS message (sendDataMessage()?).
Here's my novice take on it:
1)most well supported across carriers. Users may get mad that you just cost them N separate messages though, instead of converting to MMS or something.
2)not sure if this is supported by different carriers, and read that once the message is greater than 3 * 160 chars in length, gets converted to MMS anyway by different SMS apps - maybe stay away from this altogether.
3)not sure how to do this, and older phones might not support MMS. To send an MMS using the android SDK, do we just use the SmsManager.sendDataMessage() method?

When pulling down the notification bar and you see each notification's title and subject lines, many times the info in the text is wider than the screen. Is there a way to get the text to scroll so you can see the entire string?

In my Gmail app, I have messages showing up in my Inbox that are *no longer* in my actual Inbox. There are a couple of messages I have since deleted, or moved to another folder, or archived that are still showing up.I keep refreshing, and these 'ghost' messages still show up.Just to be clear, when I go to gmail.com in my browser, these messages are *not* in my Inbox. They are only showing up in my Gmail app Inbox.I'll take any suggestion that doesn't require me factory resetting my phone
