Motorola Droid :: Camera Application Banding Shown While Recording Video
Jan 25, 2010
Any of you see a lot of banding on the camera app in medium to low lighting. The flash usually prevents banding from appearing in pictures but when recording there is huge amounts of banding. is this normal?

Is the Incredible's camera capable of 720p video recording? Do you think it will ever be released in an update? Is it even possible to enable this feature in an update? Any ideas are welcome.

My device is rooted. Android 4.0.4 kernel: 3.0.13
I deleted my device's system camera by mistake. I didn't have any backup of that. Now I am captureing photos with other camera apps but no video recording. Cause my system camera had 1080x720 in 30p/s video recording and there is no app with such this option. So how can I now get my old system camera back?

Is the Droid capable of recording video with an external stereo mic (Sony ECM-MS957)? I was thinking about getting the Kodak Zi8, but hey, if the Droid can do it then I'll save the $200.

I have not taken a lot of video with my Droid (I have Flip for that), and what I do take, I just watch on the phone. But, I may eventually want to play this on my computer or on my TV using a streaming media device. My current device plays a LOT of formats, but I have not tried any of my Droid videos. What format does the Droid capture video in? Is it the 3gp I have heard about? If so, I think that is one format I can't play where I want it. I heard that my wife's Incredible actually records in mp4, but then converts to 3gp, but there is something you can install which prevents that conversion and keeps it in mp4. Is there something like that for the Droid?

I did not see any other open threads on this; there is a very simple system edit you can perform to record video @ 8 mbps, up from the default 3 mbps. This is from a reliable source. Works very well. Root access is required and, of course, be sure to backup everything before you try anything.
The Droid compresses recorded videos (which results in blurriness and some blocking), so today I started poking around the system files and found this line in build.prop:
Code:
ro.media.enc.hprof.vid.bps=3000000
Which basically means video is compressed at a fixed rate of 3Mbps. I didn't think it would work, but I went ahead and changed the value to 8Mbps:
Code:
ro.media.enc.hprof.vid.bps=8000000
Rebooted and shot a test video. Lo and behold, the video is now recorded at 8mbps, resulting in a MUCH crisper image!
To apply the fix, you need root access. Simply edit that line in your /system/build.prop file. You can pull the file from adb, edit it, and push it back, or mount the /system partition as read-write and edit the file with Astro.
Edit: For the more adventurous users, here's another tip: I've been tinkering with the rest of the video settings in build.prop and comparing the resulting videos. So far, the best setting I have found is actually using MPEG-4 SP instead of H.264, 8 Mbps bitrate, and 30 frames per second. The phone chokes at 30 fps in H.264 mode, but does a pretty good job with MPEG-4 SP, and at that bitrate, the image quality is still very good regardless of the codec. The pertinent settings are "ro.media.enc.hprof.codec.vid" for the codec ("h264" for H.264 and "m4v" for MPEG-4 SP) and "ro.media.enc.hprof.vid.fps" (you can choose anything from 1 to 30)

I'm running my HTC Legend with the stock "Camcorder" app and the most I can record with is 480p. Since the iPhone 4 has the same MP (5) and can shoot HD, why can't the Legend. Is there an app for such a thing? Any way without rooting, since I still want to keep my warranty till it expires.

I have two questions regarding video recording on the Droid X.
1. What options are there for encoding? On my HTC Hero I can encode in MPEG4 or H.263. What about the Droid X?
2. My friend sent me a video from her Droid X, but I can't hear anything as far as audio in a normal setting. The only way I can pick up anything she's saying is if I max out the Media volume and hold the speaker directly up to my ear. Is there something she's doing wrong when she's recording the video? This has happened twice now.

When I take videos with my droid, they always have "noise" in them. Little fuzzy dots of green and such (If you don't know what I mean by noise). I have set the quality to high and all that good stuff, even did changed the videos mbps from 3 to 8 with that trick that was posted, to no avail. Anyway, here is the video. Its pretty hard to see the problem with youtubes quality, but if you can spot it just picture it as being a hell of a lot worse. Also, the darkness is not part of the problem, I realize the droid doesn't do well in dimly lit areas, although my room is brighter than the video lets on. Pay close attention to the walls, especially when I look at the ceiling and you may see it through YouTubes bad quality.

Does anyone know of a video loop recording app that would work so as to allow "retrospective " recording - i.e. it records full time but discards after say five minutes, so that by -say -pressing a button, the previous five minutes recording could be retained , reviewed and possibly saved? I know it could be done by recording to a file for a fixed period and then discarding that file and starting a new one, but then it would be random as to the length of the recording that was available on the current file - depending on when the button was pressed. What I need is something that writes data to a fixed length file and pushes the earliest written data off the end - or some other process that simulates that.

The default android video player and the other one provided by my vendor display clear banding when playing videos. The video itself is fine because when played with BSPlayer with HW experimental there is no banding visible.
The videos are played through the MediaPlayer interface of Android. I am still not sure if it is a dithering issue or a surface format issue. I tried different modifications to the player/machine without success.
1. Build.prop settings: persist.sys.use_dithering=1 (tried 2 as well) and video.accelerate.hw=1
2. Adding the dither flag with addFlags( WindowManager.LayoutParams.FLAG_DITHER )
3. Making sure the surfaces are in RGBA_8888 with setFormat of surfaces
4. Forcing dithering in View.smali of framework.jar
How I could fix this issue with the default player. Wondering if it could be related to drivers or native code.
I ran those two apks listed here and no banding visible at all: [URL]

BGR has a video comparison up. The Droid X has much better contrast both indoor and outdoor. The iphone has horrible bloom in highlights outdoors Which crushes all detail. I would even go as far to say that the iPhone video is really bad. Not surpisingly, he declares iPhone the winner because it is 30fps and not 24fps. Personally I couldn't see the difference between the two speeds.

From all the pre release stuff I saw it looked like the Droid X was going to include a front facing camera. At the announcement today the pictures of the X looked like there was no camera and I haven't seen it mentioned. Is there not going to be a front camera on this phone. Doesn't matter to me, but I'm trying to talk my wife into getting one of these and she really wants a front camera for video calls.

I tried a few different google searches on the subject and most of the results were about playing different video format, not recording. I'm wondering if there is a way to change the factory default video recording format to something like generic avi or mpeg formats?

I have taken videos with the Droid in the past, but the past few days, as soon as i toggle the camera switch UP to capture a video, it gives me a force close screen. i have restarted the phone a few times, but same thing..
also, sometimes the camera button does nothing when trying to use it to bring up camera , i have to manually go to drop down list of apps to get to it. not a HUGE problem, but still a problem when it doesn't do what its made to do.

I wanted to write an application that makes use of the camera taking extremely slow frame-rate video and uploading it. Right now I am reading over this:
http://itp.nyu.edu/~sve204/mobilemedia_spring10/androidCamera101.pdf
My question was in regards to the camera's use. The above article makes use of a canvas to preview the image, if one didn't want to preview the image before taking it could that be done? Is it necessary to use a preview of the camera image or can I just call takepicture to take the picture and catch the resulting callback to save it to a file?

I was scrolling through the Settings for my Droid, and I noticed that under Manage Applications (after changing the filter options to ALL) that Camera was listed twice. Same icon and version (6) but different data size (124 KB and 192KB). Is this normal? I was thinking it might just be for video and photos to separate the two, but I was hoping to get experts opinions.
