Motorola Droid X :: Video Recording / Options For Encoding (MPEG4 Or H.263)
Sep 23, 2010
I have two questions regarding video recording on the Droid X.
1. What options are there for encoding? On my HTC Hero I can encode in MPEG4 or H.263. What about the Droid X?
2. My friend sent me a video from her Droid X, but I can't hear anything as far as audio in a normal setting. The only way I can pick up anything she's saying is if I max out the Media volume and hold the speaker directly up to my ear. Is there something she's doing wrong when she's recording the video? This has happened twice now.

Is the Droid capable of recording video with an external stereo mic (Sony ECM-MS957)? I was thinking about getting the Kodak Zi8, but hey, if the Droid can do it then I'll save the $200.

I have not taken a lot of video with my Droid (I have Flip for that), and what I do take, I just watch on the phone. But, I may eventually want to play this on my computer or on my TV using a streaming media device. My current device plays a LOT of formats, but I have not tried any of my Droid videos. What format does the Droid capture video in? Is it the 3gp I have heard about? If so, I think that is one format I can't play where I want it. I heard that my wife's Incredible actually records in mp4, but then converts to 3gp, but there is something you can install which prevents that conversion and keeps it in mp4. Is there something like that for the Droid?

I did not see any other open threads on this; there is a very simple system edit you can perform to record video @ 8 mbps, up from the default 3 mbps. This is from a reliable source. Works very well. Root access is required and, of course, be sure to backup everything before you try anything.
The Droid compresses recorded videos (which results in blurriness and some blocking), so today I started poking around the system files and found this line in build.prop:
Code:
ro.media.enc.hprof.vid.bps=3000000
Which basically means video is compressed at a fixed rate of 3Mbps. I didn't think it would work, but I went ahead and changed the value to 8Mbps:
Code:
ro.media.enc.hprof.vid.bps=8000000
Rebooted and shot a test video. Lo and behold, the video is now recorded at 8mbps, resulting in a MUCH crisper image!
To apply the fix, you need root access. Simply edit that line in your /system/build.prop file. You can pull the file from adb, edit it, and push it back, or mount the /system partition as read-write and edit the file with Astro.
Edit: For the more adventurous users, here's another tip: I've been tinkering with the rest of the video settings in build.prop and comparing the resulting videos. So far, the best setting I have found is actually using MPEG-4 SP instead of H.264, 8 Mbps bitrate, and 30 frames per second. The phone chokes at 30 fps in H.264 mode, but does a pretty good job with MPEG-4 SP, and at that bitrate, the image quality is still very good regardless of the codec. The pertinent settings are "ro.media.enc.hprof.codec.vid" for the codec ("h264" for H.264 and "m4v" for MPEG-4 SP) and "ro.media.enc.hprof.vid.fps" (you can choose anything from 1 to 30)

When I take videos with my droid, they always have "noise" in them. Little fuzzy dots of green and such (If you don't know what I mean by noise). I have set the quality to high and all that good stuff, even did changed the videos mbps from 3 to 8 with that trick that was posted, to no avail. Anyway, here is the video. Its pretty hard to see the problem with youtubes quality, but if you can spot it just picture it as being a hell of a lot worse. Also, the darkness is not part of the problem, I realize the droid doesn't do well in dimly lit areas, although my room is brighter than the video lets on. Pay close attention to the walls, especially when I look at the ceiling and you may see it through YouTubes bad quality.

Any of you see a lot of banding on the camera app in medium to low lighting. The flash usually prevents banding from appearing in pictures but when recording there is huge amounts of banding. is this normal?

BGR has a video comparison up. The Droid X has much better contrast both indoor and outdoor. The iphone has horrible bloom in highlights outdoors Which crushes all detail. I would even go as far to say that the iPhone video is really bad. Not surpisingly, he declares iPhone the winner because it is 30fps and not 24fps. Personally I couldn't see the difference between the two speeds.

I am sending a MPEG4 video stream in RTP format over RTSP to my android emulator using ffmpeg and ffserver. I use the Android VideoView to play the RTSP stream. I do not see the video. The error in LogCat is pasted below. Is there some specific that I need to do? If I use the Android 2.2 to run the same code, the video plays fine.
I also tried coding video using H263, but that stream does not play in 1.6/2.2 emulator =================================================================================== 07-16 15:50:46.073: DEBUG/PlayerDriver(554): buffering (6) 07-16 15:50:46.273: DEBUG/PlayerDriver(554): buffering (6) 07-16 15:50:46.474: DEBUG/PlayerDriver(554): buffering (73) 07-16 15:50:46.683: DEBUG/PlayerDriver(554): buffering (73) 07-16 15:50:46.884: DEBUG/PlayerDriver(554): buffering (73) 07-16 15:50:47.092: DEBUG/PlayerDriver(554): buffering (73) 07-16 15:50:47.293: DEBUG/PlayerDriver(554): buffering (73) 07-16 15:50:47.492: DEBUG/PlayerDriver(554): buffering (73) 07-16 15:50:47.703: DEBUG/PlayerDriver(554): buffering (73) 07-16 15:50:47.902: DEBUG/PlayerDriver(554): buffering (73) 07-16 15:50:48.113: DEBUG/PlayerDriver(554): buffering (73) 07-16 15:50:48.123: DEBUG/PlayerDriver(554): buffering (100) 07-16 15:50:48.162: ERROR/SW_DEC(554): PV SW DECODER is used for MPEG4 07-16 15:50:48.223: INFO/MP(807): onPrepared called 07-16 15:50:48.223: INFO/MP(807): vv start 07-16 15:50:48.252: INFO/mediaDuration3(807): -1 07-16 15:50:48.384: ERROR/PlayerDriver(554): HandleErrorEvent: PVMFErrCorrupt 07-16 15:50:48.652: WARN/PlayerDriver(554): PVMFInfoErrorHandlingComplete 07-16 15:50:48.652: ERROR/MediaPlayer(807): error (1, -10) 07-16 15:50:48.652: ERROR/MediaPlayer(807): Attempt to call getDuration without a valid mediaplayer 07-16 15:50:48.652: ERROR/MediaPlayer(807): error (-38, 0) 07-16 15:50:48.794: ERROR/MediaPlayer(807): Error (1,-10) 07-16 15:50:48.794: DEBUG/VideoView(807): Error: 1,-10 07-16 15:50:48.794: INFO/MP(807): onError called 07-16 15:50:49.063: ERROR/MediaPlayer(807): Error (-38,0) 07-16 15:50:49.072: DEBUG/VideoView(807): Error: -38,0 07-16 15:50:49.072: INFO/MP(807): onError called ===================================================================================

There is an online stream that is 512Kb MPEG4 and total size of 312mb online and if I'm correct after looking over docs in order to play the movie I just simply put:
CODE:..................
It is triggered to play after a button press which after a few seconds after pressing the button it plays the audio BUT doesn't show the video, why not? Do I have to use a surface view or something for visual playback of the stream.

IDK what went wrong but it wouldn't play from my phone but played fine on my Mac. Does anyone have any suggestions?

If it does support then in which format and where is the example. Also I am trying to figure out MP3 encoding long ago but still no solution. I have recorded an audio ()which is in AMR by default, how can I convert it in MP3 (any external package I can use?)

Don't know if anyone knew this but if you download the LED Desire light from the app store, use the app first to leave the LED lights on and go to your video recorder. You can now record video in the dark and have somewhat clarity with the LED lights on. Granted it would probably be a big energy waster, but atleast you know have a choice.

Is video recording supported in 1.5? I got it mostly working with the Haykuro 1.5 ADP image - the video file was legally formatted but didn't play properly.
With yesterday's official 1.5 images, it doesn't work at all.

with the wonderfully informative error message
"setVideoEncoder failed".

Is there any way to pause the video recording function? I've looked all over the net and can't find an app or a reason why this feature seems to be missing from all Android phones.
This is HD recording and could potentially replace low end video units. Seems like it should be unnecessary to use an external video editor to get a vacation video in one piece.
