KitKat 4.4 :: Google Cloud Messaging (GCM) Behind Firewall?
Nov 15, 2013
easy way to use GCM (push message on Android for Gmail, Hangouts, etc.) behind a firewall?
The problem is not that companies want to block GCM, they are just unaware of the fact that their firewall is blocking it by default. GCM uses ports 5228, 5229 & 5230 which are almost always blocked on corporate networks. This means push messages don't come through. It also seriously screws with Hangouts (when I open the app random messages come though while others don't; this results in only being able to see parts of conversations).
Response from Google is to request the ports to be opened. This is not an option as I work as a consultant and move between clients. I can't get them all to open up the ports.
Google is seriously hampering the use of Android and Google services for professional use by using non-standard ports. I don't understand why they are not openly pushing for the ports to be opened by default or use standard ports (could also just be as a fallback if the preferred ports are blocked).I can't use Hangouts professionally now (which I would prefer over Skype).

I just downloaded the android 4.4 kitkat to my phone and I am having a problem with the hotspot.
On the 4.3 I have used my hotspot to play online games without any problem, but with the 4.4 it says that I have a firewall blocking it.
What should I do??? (By the way I took my sim card and put on my old phone that has android 4.3 and it worked normally, so its not a problem with my internet or service).

So Android 2.2 is out, we've got a new SDK, and a promising new feature "Android Cloud to Device Messaging". But I just can't find any traces of this in the API diff.Did anyone find an API? Or some further docs?

My Nexus 4 was just upgraded to the android Kit Kat version via OTA. However, I am having problems with the stock messaging app. No matter what app I choose as the default messaging app Textra or ChompSMS, the pop-up notification for the stock messaging app always shows up, despite the fact that I have already turned the notification off on the stock messaging app. This means I am getting two pop-ups each time I get a text message.

Can someone explain to me how it works? Did a search on google and couldnt find the info I thought I knew about it. Am I right in thinking that it is via this that chrome/firefox to phone works, and that you can do backup and restore to and from the cloud? If so, how does one go about that? And in that case, is the cloud better for backing up than lookout? Cause I'm thinking of getting look out now that my wavesecure free trial is over (dont really want to spend $19.99 if lookout is just as good and free?)

I have got a new moto milestone and am in the process of migrating from my trusty blackberry 8800. I just need to migrate the contact list from my bb to the moto. Is google sync enought for it? I have synced all my calendar and contacts to the google cloud. Will android pull up everything when i put my sim and activate it? The usual method of exporting everything to outlook seems so cumbersome.

Specifically related to when/how often the backup is sent from phone to google servers, and whether that data is accessible from somewhere other than the DROID.I'm curious as to how to plan restores if a install a jacked up app.I've done a hard reset already, in an attempt to cure the 3g -> 1x issue, and was surprised the auto-restore re-installed my wallpaper without any type of user intervention.

In facebook app, a friend posted a soundcloud file, when I click it, it takes me to soundcloud in the play store app. I installed it and still opens the play app. Facebook says it has no defaults set. I reset play's defaults and its still doing it.

I've noticed that despite having only four or five playlists on Google Music (desktop) my phone shows a bunch - mostly ones from albums I've downloaded. They don't show up in the browser version on my desktop so it looks like the only way to get rid of them is to manually delete every single one via the phone app.
Also, I've noticed that when I switch the settings to "on device only" my playlists created on the web page no longer show up, despite me having the majority of the songs on my microSD. I remember I used to be able to switch to "on device only" and the cloud playlist would scale down to only what I had on local storage. Was so....logical! Is there any way I can still do this? My microSD music is pretty much pointless since I don't have access to the playlists when I'm using "on device only".

I have an HTC One running Android 4.1.2 and I want to listen to Google Play over my Yamaha DLNA receiver.
I've already tried some apps, and BubbleUPnP promises to have this feature, but it just won't play songs from the cloud.
Is there any chance to install a system-wide service that routes all the sounds of the device to the DLNA receiver? On an iPhone that works via AirPlay, there must be something like that for Android too, right?

Does anyone have any suggestions on where to start in case one wants to write a firewall for Android? I am interested especially in how would one go about in blocking access for various applications that are blacklisted from a firewall application. As far as I could find, there are no firewall applications in the real sense except Droidwall which uses iptables on rooted phones, but I would like to see if there are any API calls currently in Android that may help with this task, be it NDK or SDK.

I have the needs to have all instant messaging apps disabled at work. But I need data for other stuff on the android phone.
I have tried a few android firewall apps and while they all work flawlessly, there is one problem: NONE of them can stop the (Facebook) Messenger app from receiving messages.

I am looking for an app or a process to see what is using the data connection to send and pull random crap and be able to block things at the App level. I know I can just turn off Data altogether but I would like to still use the apps I WANT without needing to go and manually turn Data back on. Any ideas?

One thing that really bothers me about Google Now on a mobile device is that if you say "Set a timer for 'x' minutes" it will set an alarm (vs a countdown timer) for 'x' minutes into the future. If you say the same command to Google Search on Chrome on a PC it will set a countdown timer. I would really like it if I could just say "Okay Google (Now)... Set a timer for 10 minutes" and then have it start counting down.
Does KK updates Google Now to the ability to set a timer?

I'm still new to Android in general, so maybe I don't know something. I like to option of automatic sync of my photos to G+. However, when it comes to accessing those photos from my PC, it's rather inconvenient. The web interface is, to my feeling, rather lacking.
Is there a way to access the photos as if they were in a regular folder? Mostly, I want to be able to select a number of pictures and move them. To do this, right now I have to mouse-select them one by one, then download a weird zip archive, then select them one by one again and delete them from G+. Is there a way to do this faster and easier? If not, is there a way to sync them as they are now, but to Google Drive instead of G+?

Im looking to get a Droid X or 2 but I have recently been hitting over 500 texts per month.
I just read about the new Google Voice and how it is able to send and receive text messages. I dont seem to understand how it works can someone explain this to me?
As far as I know, when you install GV you signup and then get a #, from there I give that # to everyone to text me (not my cell phone #) and GV just stays on in the back ground all the time waiting for texts?
And, does this use the data connection to do all of this or use the phone miniutes?

I am looking for a firewall that allows setting rules for individual apps, for example allow an application to connect to [URL] and nothing else. The firewalls I've tested so far (like avast! Mobile Security) only allow the selected application to connect or not, but not filtering by url, domain, ip or such.
The only firewall I've heard of is WhisperMonitor, and is not public yet. Furthermore, it is supposed to require device encryption.

I was in an elevator, was trying to record a note to self.
When I pressed the record button in the app, the google red mic in a circle appeared.
I got an error saying I had no internet connection.
What's up with that? I thought it was supposed to work offline?
BTW, I own swiftkey keyboard (I didn't try the same elevator experiment using that)
