KitKat 4.4 :: Hotspot - Firewall Blocking It
Nov 23, 2013
I just downloaded the android 4.4 kitkat to my phone and I am having a problem with the hotspot.
On the 4.3 I have used my hotspot to play online games without any problem, but with the 4.4 it says that I have a firewall blocking it.
What should I do??? (By the way I took my sim card and put on my old phone that has android 4.3 and it worked normally, so its not a problem with my internet or service).

easy way to use GCM (push message on Android for Gmail, Hangouts, etc.) behind a firewall?
The problem is not that companies want to block GCM, they are just unaware of the fact that their firewall is blocking it by default. GCM uses ports 5228, 5229 & 5230 which are almost always blocked on corporate networks. This means push messages don't come through. It also seriously screws with Hangouts (when I open the app random messages come though while others don't; this results in only being able to see parts of conversations).
Response from Google is to request the ports to be opened. This is not an option as I work as a consultant and move between clients. I can't get them all to open up the ports.
Google is seriously hampering the use of Android and Google services for professional use by using non-standard ports. I don't understand why they are not openly pushing for the ports to be opened by default or use standard ports (could also just be as a fallback if the preferred ports are blocked).I can't use Hangouts professionally now (which I would prefer over Skype).

Does anyone have any suggestions on where to start in case one wants to write a firewall for Android? I am interested especially in how would one go about in blocking access for various applications that are blacklisted from a firewall application. As far as I could find, there are no firewall applications in the real sense except Droidwall which uses iptables on rooted phones, but I would like to see if there are any API calls currently in Android that may help with this task, be it NDK or SDK.

I have the needs to have all instant messaging apps disabled at work. But I need data for other stuff on the android phone.
I have tried a few android firewall apps and while they all work flawlessly, there is one problem: NONE of them can stop the (Facebook) Messenger app from receiving messages.

I am looking for an app or a process to see what is using the data connection to send and pull random crap and be able to block things at the App level. I know I can just turn off Data altogether but I would like to still use the apps I WANT without needing to go and manually turn Data back on. Any ideas?

I am looking for a firewall that allows setting rules for individual apps, for example allow an application to connect to [URL] and nothing else. The firewalls I've tested so far (like avast! Mobile Security) only allow the selected application to connect or not, but not filtering by url, domain, ip or such.
The only firewall I've heard of is WhisperMonitor, and is not public yet. Furthermore, it is supposed to require device encryption.

I'm launching an IntentService using startActivity from inside the onClickListener of a button. startActivity returns immediately. No blocking there. But the button stays "pressed" until the IntentService finishes its work. In addition, the screen does not respond to rotation while the IntentService thread is running. I can see that it's a separate thread in the debugger but the UI seems to be coupled to it. As soon as the IntentService thread finishes, the UI is unblocked. Any idea how I can prevent this and let the UI continue?

Now i want my application to handle the incoming call instead of default android application. So for this, i am trying to kill the android phone process. Please tell me can i do so. If not, then how can i reject the incoming call.

On the market, there's an application called App Protector, which seems to effectively block the launching of configured activities until a password is correctly provided. By default, it blocks access to itself (not very interesting), Settings, and a few others. I wrote my own app to launch settings (rather than doing so through the home screen) and App Protector continued to do the job it claims to do.
When an activity that is protected is started, App Protector's password input activity is shown instead. Once the correct password is provided, the activity that was started comes to the front.
First -- does anyone know how this app is able to get between the rest of the system and the activities it protects? I would like to do something along these lines in my own application as well. Perhaps this app is receiving a broadcast about other activities coming to the foreground, and when the foreground activity is protected, it forces itself to the foreground?
Second -- does anyone know how well this technique will stand up to attack? Are there other ways to circumvent, where start Activity(...) fails to? It seems that one could use adb to un install it, thus removing its protection easily, but if I pursue my plans here, the app will be a part of a device's firmware (which, I assume, offers some protection against its apps being installed?)

Is there a API for intercepting and blocking a call? What I want to do is to create app that autometically detect incoming call and based on the caller it either alert the user or don's alert the user. Like, if the number is stored in the phone book then alert the user other wise just send a message to the caller that the person is busy.

I have an Activity that implements a Gesture Detector to catch the user fling input for navigation to other screens. That was working fine - but - I recently updated a class that derives from my BaseActivity to add an onClick function and now that click event seems to block the onFling from being hit. The onClick is tied to a TextView area (in a LinearLayout) I have on my screen. The resultsClick method is wired to the TextView using its onClick property in the XML layout.
I've tried changing the return values in onSingleTapUp and onDown without luck. I've also tried adding log statements to all the functions below as well. None of them fire when I fling in the TextView area but they do on other areas of the screen.
Maybe I am using the wrong search terms, but I couldn't seem to find an example that addressed this - yet I'm sure this problem has been solved before.

I have two numbers I need to block from incoming calls and send directly to voicemail. If I block in the default "People" app will it do this or do I need an app for this (no pun intended). I just need to know if the default people blocking will send a call to voicemail instead of ringing? Will it also block text msgs if blocked in People? I would test this out myself but unfortunately that's not an option. I only have one phone here, my cell, so I can't test from another number here at home.

I am using two ics phones, Galaxy Nexus and Htc Sensation stock roms. I am trying to connect to my DVR devices through a 3g router using well known network ports numbers (>1024) for the dvr devices.
The network consist of 3 devices:
3g router: my domain com : 80
Dvr Device1: my domain com : 7687
Dvr Device2: my domain com : 5054
I can connect to the 3g router which is listening to port 80 from my android phones but not to the dvr devices using a 3g network.
But I can connect using the android phones if they are connected to a WIFI network or an Iphone (2g,3g,wifi), a Nokia symbian phone (2g,3g,wifi) or a Pc using adsl internet connection.
There isn't a port forward issue since I can connect from every device except android phones.
