i received kitkat yesterday on my N4, and installed GEL this morning, but one thing bothers me :
how does the "nearby places" function work? i try for example to type in "pizza" but nothing... and beleive me, there are pizza restaurants nearby.

I prefer the 4.3 dialer to the new 4.4 dialer in kitkat. I tried removing google dialer and replacing it with a copy of 4.3's dialer from my nandroid. It sort of worked. The dialer launches and works as you'd expect. However as soon as you press send to make a call, the dialer screen disappears. The call is placed successfully but you can't end it, see the keypad, or speaker options. The in call screen basically disappears. You can still get to call history but none of the call screen options are visible.

Only happens when I dial out that number and not when I receive it. Normally, I wouldn't care,I have like 10 Unknown calls at the top of my log.

View 11 Replies View RelatedSince the time I have upgraded to KitKat- I have been facing the issue of Call History. Every Time I miss a Call and I click on the name/number- Its asks me to select a default option of whoch way to open that entry , that is, through Dialer or through History. I tried selecting history and clicked on the "always use this option" but the same thing kept happening every time. After a few tries, I chose the other option and did the same thing and it again kept appearing... It looks like there's a bug in this and it never really saves my preference.

View 1 Replies View RelatedIv had my Eris for about a month now and love it.It's easily the best phone I've had (my previous were all dumb phones). However, this is the frist phone I have had where the voice recognition actually works. Google voice search is incredible. The wierd thing is though, my voice dialer doesnt work AT ALL. I thought it was maybe becuase I was running ATM, but I stopped like 2 weeks ago and it still isn't working. I mean it wont recognize anything- not even redial or open calendar.

I currently have my Google Voice settings to *always* use Google Voice, however when I call someone my actual number shows up. If you are unfamiliar with Google Voice, the Google Voice number should show up. This problems seems to be limited to my ROM which has the HTC dialer replaced by Dialer One.

View 4 Replies View RelatedOn an ATT Samsung Galaxy S3 running 4.3 Jelly Bean (not rooted), I want to create a shortcut to Nearby Devices so I can easily toggle on/off my DLNA. It is found in Settings | Connections | Connect and Share.
Exploring the launcher shortcut options in Apex, Buzz, Nova, TouchWiz home and ssLauncher (my default), I could find no shortcut to Nearby Devices.
Using ES App Manager set to System Apps, I found Nearby Devices at com.sec.android.pernission.PERSONAL_MEDIA, but the 'Add To Desktop' feature in ES seemingly does nothing with this app.
I know I could probably use an app like Tasker to do this, but it seems there should be another way.
I am just getting started with android development. I would like to know if it is possible to use Bluetooth to automatically scan for nearby devices that are running my app as well.
So for instance when i walk into my house it should automatically scan for another phone in the house running my app, and then say if it is running my app send a message to that phone.
I have a Nexus 5. If I choose a custom notification sound in hangouts, for example, that is an .mp3 file, I would get the word "Silent" underneath the sound setting. The same goes for ringtones, but the word that shows underneath Phone ringtone in settings would be "None". I've tried putting the file under the Ringtone folder and it still wouldn't work. How do I get custom sounds to work on KitKat/Nexus 5? It can be set all the way up and nothing would happen.

Facebook rolled out a new places feature last night. Non-Iphone users are supposed to be able to use it through the touch.facebook.com site, but I am not seeing the Places tab when I navigate to that site. Is anyone else able to access this feature?

I hear that Places has a lot of potential to surpass Foursquare but like that guy said, it looks pretty boring. View 12 Replies View RelatedMy phone entries are all area code first, then 7 digit phone number. I've noticed that it places a 1 in front of every number I dial out. I know I can turn this off, but is it necessary to do this by Sprint? I know my ATT phone didn't need the 1 in front, area code by itself worked fine, even on long distance calls. I also noticed, if I just type the number in, no area code it looks at it like it's a totally new number than the one in my phone. My last phone wouldn't care if I put area code first, it would pick up that contact and show that picture. Any thoughts on this?

View 5 Replies View RelatedI recently got my first Android and am really digging the Google contacts integration. Especially with the Google+ profiles (even though.. who uses Google+??).
One issue I have, though, is that some of my contacts have G+ profile pics, and they show in my Hangouts app (when I text those people), but those pics do not show in the "Google People" app where I go when I want to look at my contacts. They also don't show in my phone dialer when I dial them by name.
It should be application to iPhone or Android or other mobile platform, where, basically, user can access map with "places of interest" and add it's own "place of interest" (with photo and description). Kind of, community generated sightseeing map. I know it is quite simple and not a groundbreaking idea, but my google-fu is quite weak and I can't find anything like that.

I can't figure out how to set a location other than my current location when searching places. I guess if someone can tell me how to search for places NEAR an address or point on the map that I choose, it will be ok. I still don't like the interface as well as the old one though.
