HTC Incredible :: Getting Call Quality Creep - Caller Would Drop In And Out
Jun 28, 2010
My Inc worked well for about the first-ish month. I sometimes had "muddy" call quality and the caller would drop in and out (to the point I thought they hung up, but I would start hearing them again). I attributed this to the caller's device/network and not my device.
I went from noticing this just a few times, to almost all calls have the problem now, to some degree. It does not matter if using the ear or external speaker. GPS through the speaker is perfectly clear and so is playing movies and music.
This suggest it is not an audio output problem, but an actual voice call problem. It is getting so bad that I am beginning to dislike the Inc, since phone calls are obviously a critical function of the device. Everything else works fine.

Do you have any problems with call quality and/or calls dropping? I personally have never had a problem. I am in a major city and not the country or rural area. I'm just trying to see what percentage of users have these issues.

I know there are lots of comments that some folks have issues. Maybe OTA will fix it etc etc. My wife called my from Beijing, China on her Incredible to my Incredible here in California. Sounded PERFECT. Crystal clear no issues on either end. FWIW data has worked perfectly. She can access some sites like Facebook that the wifi in her hotel firewalls. The network itself was pretty amazing too. No call lag whatsoever.

I've had my Incredible since the 29th (yes, I had to wait) and it is been fantastic except for one important thing - call quality.I know everyone in here has been discussing signal strength and bars, but I've been experiencing very poor quality in calls. It only seems to be the audio I'm hearing (people on the other end say I sound fine) that is bad - with everything from little 1 second "scuffs" (sounds like someone blowing on the phone mic), to 1 second moments of silence while someone is talking, to what sounds like auto-tune on the person's voice. When there isn't distortion the person sounds kind of muffled. Many times even the audio of the ringing cuts out a couple times or sounds distorted when calling someone.Anyone on here experiencing a similar issue? I stopped by my local VZW store to which the technician didn't feel there was a problem and refused to replace my phone (although they had no new phones anyways). I've done a hard reset to remove any apps that may be interfering with the calls and it's still the same. Also have tested at least 50 calls in several areas of Rochester, NY (30ish mile radius) over the past 4 days.

I noticed this under the Incredible Wikipedia page the other day as a "tip" for improving call quality;
- Go to Phone and Dial ##778
- Choose Edit Mode
- Password is 000000
- Go to CDMA Settings
- Scroll all the way to bottom
- Change Home Page, Home Orig, and Roam Orig from option EVRC to EVRC-B
- Hit Menu and Commit Changes
- Phone reboots

Just got the HTC DROID INCRED yesterday...was pre-ordered. Like to know if anyone has expereinced of call quality like dropped calls, audio breaking up and poor reception in general? I understand there is a "quere" on how many bars appear on the display, but frankly coming from a Blackberry Storm 2, I have never had any of these issues. The location is well within city limits and was never a problem with other models of phones. Any possible patches or fixes in the works?

When I set a picture for the caller id/contacts in my phone and that person calls or I call them the picture is crap quality. Why? How do I fix this? The factory Android picture is good quality, why are my phones pure crap?

Codes to enter the programming menu can be found here: How to Increase Droid X Call Quality? Relevant EVRC-B settings are under NAM CDMA Settings on the Incredible. I myself am not experiencing the call quality issue, so I can't vouch for the results. Link above indicates it may cause extra drain on battery. I used this same code years ago on a Samsung "dumb" phone and it did wonders for call quality and I did not notice a difference in battery life.

With all the doom and gloom threads around here it makes one feel that the phone is a complete dud and no one is getting good signal strength. "If you hold the phone wrong your dBm signal strength drops by 20!" "The battery doesn't last through the day!" etc. etc.I know usually it's a "vocal minority" thing but the sheer volume of complaints on this forum is worrying me.Is anyone here having a more or less flawless experience with the Incredible as far as phone calls are concerned? I.e. are you getting good 3G reception as compared with prior phones you've had on VZW and so forth?I am really REALLY on the fence between the Incredible and the Motorola Droid and I don't want to regret getting the Inc if these problems are blown out of proportion.

I was setting up some photos for the Photo Caller ID function for incoming calls and was rather disappointed at the quality of the image that comes up. I either add an image to the contact in the People app or I go to the gallery and chose to "Set as" a contact icon. The picture pops up and you are given a little square crop/zoom tool to chose the portion of the picture that you want as you icon/photo caller ID. When I stretch the square OUT as big as possible to crop and then set the image with the contact, the caller ID image that comes up is good. However, any cropping/zooming is significantly Degrades/Pixelates the image that is chosen.
I'm not using the FULL 8MB resolution (set to 5MP) for the camera and I know if you crop and zoom any image, the more you zoom the worse the quality of the picture, But the 5MP shots I have should be MORE THAN sufficient to produce a little square of a photo caller ID. I had photo caller ID that popped up on my Palm Centro with photos was cropped to 320 x 320 and saved with LOW resolution and those photos were very clear. Even with the crop and zoom that is required to produce the contact/photo caller ID image, the 5MP photos I am using should be more than sufficient to produce a clear image. Is there a fix/trick for the quality to improve? Here we have this big beautiful screen and you crop a nice-sized 5MP picture for a tiny square caller ID photo and the quality is horrible.

On the Droid X, the caller ID which is synced from my Facebook or Google account is very low quality and small in size/dimensions. Is there not a setting to show high res quality and to make it appear larger on the screen? I just switched from the Evo and know that it was a similar issue on there. just curious if there is a known work around for the Droid X. Other than that, I am very happy with this phone so far. The build quality is much much better than the Evo's.

Some Droid users were having the same call quality issues and someone suggested this fix. Worked for some, not for others. As always, be careful if applying:

I'm having some call quality issues but they're mainly on the other end of the line. Those I'm speaking to are picking up some static/background noise. I really don't have any complaints with the call quality on my end. Also, I've noticed it seems to be worse when I'm in the car traveling. If I'm at home and make a call, others tell me the call is clear. Anyone else experience a similar scenario?

I use Google Voice (love it) primarily because of it's visual voicemail on my Droid. I do have a Google Voice number, and I'm trying to decide whether to set the Droid app to "make calls using Google Voice" or not.
I have no problem with giving out a different number, and my placed calls seeing the GV number in caller ID.
My question is, does this affect how the call is actually connected, from a quality standpoint? I tired a call both ways, and the sound quality seemed a little bit different. But then, I am an obsessive compulsive weirdo.
Is there any difference in call quality or routing between making a native Verizon call and a Google Voice call on Droid? (Like, does Google voice actual use 3G to connect to Google server over the internetz, then place the phone call?)

We originally bought 5 for our business. Of those 5, 2 have been returned and exchanged for Blackberries. We continue to have terrible Signal Strength, and in 2 phones a very loud echo. All other little bugs aside, im looking for some answers. Since I didnt see any side by side tests, I thought I would
1. I tested the signal strength at 5 locations. All locations had great 3g speeds for all the phones. The first INC is an original phone, and the second INC is a replacement.
Droid Eris INC1 INC2
-75 -80 -98 -96
-85 -74 -101 -100...
My question is, how can i have GREAT 3g speeds with all the phones, yet have a terrible signal strength. I'm on my 2nd phone and still have the same issues. ( So its not a bad batch)
2. The first thing the other 2 users of the phones mentioned right out of the box there was a very defined echo. The echo was of their own voice, not the other person on the line. I've noticed it on and off, but nothing to bad. People also complain they can hear the echo, making us hard to hear on the phone. I really like the Incredible, but I guess unless someone from Verizon tells me to wait for an update, or someone here has a solution Im gonna have to go back to the Blackberry. Anyone else having the same problems?....

Just got my Incredible and love it. I charged it up last night for the second time. Turned it on this morning and all looked good. Received a call this morning and I could hear the caller but they could not hear me. Several more incoming calls and the same issue. Then I made some calls...I could hear the person but they could not hear me. Finally turned phone off and back on and it is now fine. Mute was not on.....anyone know what this could be?

Froyo 2.2 issue. When I am on a phone call and another call comes through, that person's Caller ID contact list name does not come up, just their phone number (even though they are in my contact list). This did not happen on 2.1...it always showed the contact name info. why or if there is a setting to change?

At about 5-10 seconds into a call (either outgoing or incoming), my transmissions are muffled for about 10 seconds. Thereafter, I have occasional intermittent similar problems. I can always hear the other party perfectly; they just can't hear me. It happens with either the built-in mic or the corded headset or bluetooth.

Is there an app that will send a text to the caller if you miss their call? For example, I am expecting a call from my wife but am in the shower when she calls. I need something to send her(only her) a text if I miss her call. Other calls missed can go to voicemail.

Suppose my application xyz stores a few contacts(just like in the address book/ telephone book). Other contacts are by-default stored in my Android address book. Suppose I receive a call on the handset with my app xyz running in the background. All I need is to fetch the Caller's name from the application xyz and display this name as" Akash Calling..." instead of "+91... calling..." assuming that caller's details are present in the application say, his name and none of his details in the actual address book. Is this feasible.

I have the Galaxy S2 jelly bean version. My problem is that when I am on a call and I receive another call, I get the notification beeping sound, and the person I am talking to also hears the beep and becomes aware that someone is trying to call me! The person I'm talking to should not hear the beep or know that I'm being called by a third person!
how to prevent/turn off the beep to the person I am talking to without turning off call waiting ?

Is it possible that during the call a greeting message is played to the caller like: "Welcome, Please wait while the call is picked" ? Is there any Android app that can do this functionality? How do I search for this feature on Android? Is there any name for this feature of playing a greeting message to caller?

noticed something weird with KitKat, and confirmed this on two different phones (Nexus 5 and Moto G but running latest KitKat 4.4.2). On occasion (not every time) the phone seems to auto dial someone after you've ended a call with someone else.
My wife reported the problem first with her Moto G. At first I thought she might just be accidentally hitting a button after calling someone (this is her first smart phone and first touch screen phone) but it's happened several times for her. Final catch was today when I clearly had it happen to me (it also appears it may have happened before once or twice on my phone). I had called someone using my bluetooth in my car, at the end of the call I pushed the hangup button on the steering wheel, and the call ended. Then my wife picked up the phone to call another person and we both noticed it was calling some other friend of ours (that I had txt'd with maybe 2 hours before). It had just started calling this person for no reason. We quickly ended the call (hopefully it didn't bug them), but wow is that annoying.
It seems to happen every once in a while right after hanging up with another call. It seems to call someone in either your recent call or txt history. I'm not sure what might trigger it as it doesn't happen every time, and I'm not sure what number it chooses to call (though it does appear to be someone you recently called or txt'd).

One thing I've noticed with my HTC Hero (Sprint) is that I have a very short period of time to answer an incoming call before the caller is directed to voice mail. When I do answer the phone people are routinely telling me that it rang 4 or more times before I answered even though, from my perspective, I answered it rather quickly. Could this have something to do with using downloaded ringtones? Perhaps, while the phone should be ringing, instead, it is loading the ringtone off the sdcard.

Is anyone using the Skype modified app that allows you to call over the data network? I was wondering how it's working for others. Mine has been horrible as far as call quality. Almost unusable. I'm on 3G. I was wondering if there were any settings that needed to be enabled or unenabled? My Skype WiFi works great.
