HTC Incredible :: Signal Test / Strength Call Quality In Doubt 2nd Phone

May 5, 2010

We originally bought 5 for our business. Of those 5, 2 have been returned and exchanged for Blackberries. We continue to have terrible Signal Strength, and in 2 phones a very loud echo. All other little bugs aside, im looking for some answers. Since I didnt see any side by side tests, I thought I would

1. I tested the signal strength at 5 locations. All locations had great 3g speeds for all the phones. The first INC is an original phone, and the second INC is a replacement.

Droid Eris INC1 INC2
-75 -80 -98 -96
-85 -74 -101 -100...

My question is, how can i have GREAT 3g speeds with all the phones, yet have a terrible signal strength. I'm on my 2nd phone and still have the same issues. ( So its not a bad batch)

2. The first thing the other 2 users of the phones mentioned right out of the box there was a very defined echo. The echo was of their own voice, not the other person on the line. I've noticed it on and off, but nothing to bad. People also complain they can hear the echo, making us hard to hear on the phone. I really like the Incredible, but I guess unless someone from Verizon tells me to wait for an update, or someone here has a solution Im gonna have to go back to the Blackberry. Anyone else having the same problems?....

HTC Incredible :: Call Quality Very Sub-par (not Signal Strength)

May 2, 2010

I've had my Incredible since the 29th (yes, I had to wait) and it is been fantastic except for one important thing - call quality.I know everyone in here has been discussing signal strength and bars, but I've been experiencing very poor quality in calls. It only seems to be the audio I'm hearing (people on the other end say I sound fine) that is bad - with everything from little 1 second "scuffs" (sounds like someone blowing on the phone mic), to 1 second moments of silence while someone is talking, to what sounds like auto-tune on the person's voice. When there isn't distortion the person sounds kind of muffled. Many times even the audio of the ringing cuts out a couple times or sounds distorted when calling someone.Anyone on here experiencing a similar issue? I stopped by my local VZW store to which the technician didn't feel there was a problem and refused to replace my phone (although they had no new phones anyways). I've done a hard reset to remove any apps that may be interfering with the calls and it's still the same. Also have tested at least 50 calls in several areas of Rochester, NY (30ish mile radius) over the past 4 days.

HTC Incredible :: Having GREAT Signal Strength And Call Quality?

May 7, 2010

With all the doom and gloom threads around here it makes one feel that the phone is a complete dud and no one is getting good signal strength. "If you hold the phone wrong your dBm signal strength drops by 20!" "The battery doesn't last through the day!" etc. etc.I know usually it's a "vocal minority" thing but the sheer volume of complaints on this forum is worrying me.Is anyone here having a more or less flawless experience with the Incredible as far as phone calls are concerned? I.e. are you getting good 3G reception as compared with prior phones you've had on VZW and so forth?I am really REALLY on the fence between the Incredible and the Motorola Droid and I don't want to regret getting the Inc if these problems are blown out of proportion.

Sprint HTC Hero :: Signal Strength / Call Quality

Jul 18, 2010

Been thinking about flashing a new radio for my hero but I'm just not sure what is a good signal or a bad signal. At my house my phone shows 2-3 bars and between 84-93db most of the time. Is that good? what should be a standard for evaluating signal strength? Sorry if this has already been done. In past threads i've seen posts re: decibals but none i've ever seen has stated what the norm/standard is or what a person should expect. As far as flashing a new radio I know its trial and error. I was just wanting to know what I should expect. TYVM in advance for your answers. BTW running Fresh 2.3.3 with his stock radio 1.04.01.09.21

HTC Incredible :: Pinch Method When Hold Phone Improves Signal Strength

May 11, 2010

A poster said a week ago that basically putting one finger on the top left of your phone with a second on the lower left corner improves signal strength.

Well it works really well at my job (inside a big building) where I usually hover at 100db but using this method I get about 88-90db and adds 2 bars.

So my question is can I do something (or add something) that will duplicate that effect without having to hold my phone with a couple of fingers?

Samsung Moment :: Signal Strength Apply To Data Signal Or Just Voice Signal?

Nov 4, 2009

I want to reach out to others here before I take my Moment back to Best Buy to exchange it for another Moment.

My signal strength fluctuates wildly just sitting in the same spot. With the Hero I got a constant 5 of 6 bars, but the Moment will vary between 0 and 5 of 6 bars. But it's more complicated than that.

It seems that whenever the EVDO data kicks in, it causes the signal strength to drop to 0 or 1 bar. Once the data is idle, the EVDO indicator turns grey and then changes from EV(^v) to EV(D). At that point the single strength will return to 3 or 4 bars.

At times, though not as consistently or often, the EVDO connection will fall back to 1xRTT and will switch between them every few minutes. This will occur even when the signal strength bars are in the 3 to 4 range.

So, the my questions are...

Does the signal strength apply to the data signal or just the voice signal?

Is there any legitimate reason for the signal strength to vary wildly like I've described, even when sitting in the same recliner where the Hero had a constant 5 bar connection and data service that never wavered?

Is anyone else having signal strength and/or data service issues?

Should I exchange the Moment for another Moment or will I likely experience the same issue?

Samsung Vibrant :: Very Weak Signal And Call Quality

Aug 16, 2010

I've had the Vibrant for a couple days now.Unfortunately, I have a VERY weak 3G signal and my call quality really isn't that great. In my house, when I hold my phone right next to my Dad's Nuron, he has a full 3G signal while I have 0 bars. That is frustrating to see.The phone isn't incapable of having 3G signal, when I travel outside of my neighborhood it usually has a very strong signal. It seems that whenever I am around a lot of trees or in buildings, the signal is very weak.I mostly just have an Edge signal. Also, the call quality is terrible. I don't think it has to do with the signal because even when I have full 3G bars, it still sucks.

HTC Incredible :: Understanding Signal Strength?

Jun 14, 2010

Just downloaded "Real Signal" from the market and am trying to understand what the numbers mean. Tried searching here, no luck. Can someone point me to a good thread or a resource to help me understand what the #s mean? At home I get 2 bars and the battery lasts and lasts, at work I get 0 to 1 bar and the phone hunts for a signal, making the back of the phone very warm to the touch, eating battery like there's no tomorrow. I have it on 'airplane mode' right now but that sort of defeats the purpose of having it, might as well turn it OFF.

I have noticed where it is sometimes mentioned that on the Inc, they go to settings and somehow monitor the signal strength.... like -80 to -90, etc. I have looked and can't seem to find it. In fact, I have looked all through various wigets and programs and still haven't found anything concerning signal strength...

HTC Incredible : Will An OTA Improve Signal Strength?

May 1, 2010

Would an OTA update fix this problem? And I'm not necessarily talking the one that was mentioned here today. I can live with the battery issue until the extended battery comes out. I love this phone and don't want to send it back but I really might have no other choice. What are the chances that some update will improve the issue or is it a hardware issue that might never get resolved?

Also, anyone know how long you have with a phone till you can not port your number? I've been using the phone with a new number and still have my ATT Bold active. I don't want to port my number till I am sure I will be keeping the Incredible.

Android :: Crowdsourcing App To Map Cell Phone Signal Strength

Dec 18, 2009

There is a site Cellreception.com that tries to aggregate cell phone reception from users who bother to leave reviews. But data collection can be made much more easier, even passive:

Make an app that sends the phone's GPS location and the 2G/3G signal strength of the current provider in that location, to a centralized database, aggregate the results, and make them public online.

Nth Signal seems to be an app like that, but I can't find it on the market, and the reviews on Androlib are not good.

Android :: Measuring Real Phone Signal Strength On Mobil?

Dec 4, 2009

I want to programmatically measure the phone signal strength in a mobile phone. I don't actually care about the mobile phone or the programming environment: It can be based on android or windows mobile or even J2ME and can be from any manufacturer (please no iPhone). However, it needs to be a real, commercial mobile phone and not a special measurement device. This problem is not as easy as it seems with a first look. I am aware that there already exist a number of methods that claim to return the phone signal strength. Some of these are:

SystemState.PhoneSignalStrength for WM6 RIL_GetCellTowerInfo for WinCe (dwRxLevel member of returned RILCELLTOWERINFO struct) android.telephony.NeighboringCellInfo.getRssi() for android

The problem with the above is that they only return a few (under 10) discrete values, meaning that, for instance, the return values of SystemState.PhoneSignalStrength can only be translated to (for instance) -100 dbm, -90 dbm, -80 dbm, -70 dbm and -60 dbm, something that is not useful for my application, since I'd like to have as much precision as possible. It doesn't matter if there is an undocumented solution that only works on only one phone

HTC Incredible :: Poor Signal Quality Inside Buildings?

May 13, 2010

So far I have had bad luck with the signal/call quality. This is not just me not liking the number of bars but actually loosing all signal, not being able to make or receive calls, and it draining the crap out of the battery.Facts:

1) When outside, in my car, near the windows in buildings, the call quality is great

2) A Moto Droid in the same office gets acceptable signal and call quality

3) This is an issue anytime I'm in a building; Lowes, Walmart, the pet store, a mexican resturant... anything larger then my house.

4) My old iPhone never a problem in all of these places.

5) The side affect is it kills my battery life. I purchased the seido extended battery and it is always down to 30% by the time i leave work at 5pm (10 hours off the charger) On the weekends it lasts 40-60 hours no problem.

After talking with a Verizon Tech she told me they would send me a new phone. But due to the back order I won't get it before the end of the month. Which scares me since that puts me out of the 30 day return policy. So I asked her about that and she said this would extend it another 30 days. Which I wish I had in writing but heres for hoping this works because I love the phone when it works

Motorola Droid :: Poor Signal Quality Compared To LG Phone

Nov 29, 2009

I have had my droid for 21 days now. The first week I was frustrated because I could not use my "backup assistant" which I have used for a long time to transfer my contacts. ( im sure they will come up with an "app" for that soon, and it works very differently than my old LG. Once I worked through the basics of using the phone I started to notice I have very poor reception at my home. (This is really bugging me because my husband has the FREE LG flip phone and has perfect service everywhere in the house) I buy the best and he gets the free phone and he talks anywhere but I have to go out on the back porch or stand by the back door with my head against the window in order to talk to somehone. Part of me really wants to return it for that reason alone, but I love the other features of the phone and don't know if I want to give them up. Has anyone else had issues with poor signal quality>

Android :: Neighboring Cell Signal Strengths Better Than Those For Current Cell Signal Strength?

Jan 6, 2010

I'm writing an android application that collects cell signal strengths. I am having trouble getting the "current" cell signal strength, but I don't have any problem getting the "neighboring" cell signal strengths. To get the current cell signal strength, I created a PhoneStateListener and implemented the onSignalStrengthChanged callback. It works, but not very well. It seems like the signal strength hardly ever changes, and resolution jumps to only a few numbers. I would accept the answer that the resolution of the signal strength hardware is coarse, but when I use the TelephonyManager's getNeighboringCellInfo() method, it works much better. The signal strength readings from neighboring cells change frequently, and they have much better resolution. So, how can I get the current cell signal strength in the same way that I am getting the neighboring cell strengths? It seems odd to me that the functionality of the neighboring cells is better than the current cell. Am I missing something here?I would also like to directly call a method from the telephony manager to get current cell strength, as opposed to a listener, if possible. If anyone knows how, please let me know.

Android :: GPS Signal Strength

Jul 17, 2010

I'm guessing that the GPS hardware in most Android phones is the same or close. If it makes a difference I have the Moto Cliq XT.I'm going hiking tomorrow and will be using Google's My Tracks program. I've tried it twice... the first time I could not get a signal despite being out in desert with nothing to block the signal. Next time I was in the mountains and once I had a signal, it was rock solid. Worked like a charm. But I did not want to take a chance and held it in my hand the entire time. I'm wondering if anyone has tried it while the phone was in their pocket. Any issues with sat lock on? This would be much easier. I also can't imagine that you'd not be able to use GPS while the phone was in your pocket as it's not really possible to have it in your hand all of the time.
