HTC Incredible :: Getting Adfree To Work

I was following the directions for getting Adfree to work here, but I am having some problems. After I download and install hosts from the program, there is no "hosts" folder in my SD card.
i take no credit for this, just found it over on XDA. Here's how to get this working
1. Search for Adfree Android on the market
2. Install and run
3. allow it to download and install new hosts file, it will copy it to your sdcard and try to replace /system/etc/hosts but fail (it should reboot the phone shortly)
3a. Phone may reboot, this is fine, don't worry. if it doesn't reboot, check your SD card for a file simply named "hosts". if it's there, then continue on.
4. Power off the phone and hold Volume Down and power.
5. Use volume down to select recovery
6. In clockwork recovery volume down to "partitions menu" and hit the track pad to select
7. Select "mount /system", "mount /sdcard" and "mount /data"
8. Plug in your usb cord and open a command line on your pc
9. enter adb shell and type: cp /sdcard/hosts /data/data/hosts (This copies the AdFree hosts file from the SD Card to the /data partition, where it can be edited by AdFree)
10. mv /system/etc/hosts /system/etc/hosts.bak (This renames the current hosts file, rather than deleting it, should you ever want to remove AdFree and return to the original hosts file)
11. ln -s /data/data/hosts /system/etc/hosts (This creates a symbolic link, which allows AdFree to edit the hosts file stored in /data while allowing the OS to use the file as if it were stored in /system. You won't need to reboot into recovery each time you want to update the hosts file!)
12. Reboot and enjoy.
EDIT: updated with new method. just did this myself and it works great. it updates on it's own now.
ANOTHER EDIT: I just had a guy PM me asking "what if the phone doesn't reboot on step 3?"
it may or may not reboot. bottom line is that we want the "hosts" file to get downloaded from Adfree onto our SD card. so if the phone doesn't do an instant reboot when getting the hosts, just check your SD card for a file named "hosts". if it is there, then you are good to continue on and follow the rest of the steps. let me know if you need any further help. i did it the old way about a week or so ago, and then did it the new way last night so that i could have Adfree automatically update the hosts file on its own. the new method does work flawlessly.
Is anyone else having problems with adfree android after the 2.2 install?
View 5 Replies View RelatedI wiped my phone and installed Darchdroid 2.8 this morning. Now when I try to update Adfree Android's hosts, it gives me the following error: "Failed to remount system partition read-write" It worked on 2.8 before the wipe & flash.

View 5 Replies View RelatedI used AdFree on my Incredible. When I would run Wireless Tether, it would also block ads on my PC. I never even got a single YouTube, Pandora, or Hulu ad. I don't know exactly how it was done; it just worked.
Now, I'm on a rooted Rezound using AdAway. It blocks ads on my device, but not on my PC when tethered as AdFree did on my Incredible. I tested by accessing one of the blocked URLs in the hosts file...it was blocked on my device, not on my PC.
I thought maybe the webserver needed to be enabled, but no, that wasn't it. I've tried with both AdFree and AdAway, cleared DNS cache, etc. Is there some setting I'm missing in either Wireless Tether or AdAway? I know it's possible somehow; I've changed nothing on my PC and it worked perfectly on my Incredible.
Over the past week, the display on my DInc has been slowly tinting toward a redish/pink hue. It appears the greys are turning pink. Anybody having this problem with their device? Is there a setting to work out the color balance anywhere?

Amazon.com: HTC Standard Battery for Ozone XV6175 / Imagio / Touch Pro 2 (CDMA) / Snap S511: Cell Phones & Service
Im assuming its the 1500 mah OEM touch pro battery, but I dont see that listed anywhere.
I am making the jump from a Palm Treo to the Incredible. Came very very close to getting the Droid and then a friend told me to hold out for the Incredible. From everything that I am reading I am really glad that I have waited. Anyway, I use AOL and gmail. How is it expected these email accounts will work with the Incredible? Will I get instant notification of a new email, will I have to set it up to check each account for a time frame I specify or will I manually have to open the email and check it? I know that this may be a basic question, however on my Palm I have to manually go into my email and download messages.

Anyway, I want to try this thing out. I love SwiftKey, but I wanna play around with other keyboards as well.
I'm still running 2.1.
Gameloft Gangstar: West Coast Hustle works well as a GTA clone. Menu is glitchy when driving but game works ok. Can run over pedestrians.
Gameloft Dungeon Hunter works well as a hack and slash dungeon game. This is the best working game right now.
Sandstorm however - nothing but grief. At least so far.
Tried Quake 1 on the phone but the controls are terrible and can't cheat so it sucked. Have not seen working doom or duke nukem ports.
For some reason I can't get my MMS to work. It's always been buggy, ie a message comes in and it won't download the first time and normally I have to go into the messaging app for it to work right. But yesterday I sent an MMS and my friend didn't get it. I tried again with another person and same thing. Then today another friend sent me an MMS and I can't open it in Handcent or Messaging. I'm rooted with Virtuous Rom.PS - Now the message just says downloading on Handcent and on the Messages app and I can't cancel it to retry. Just sits there forever.

View 7 Replies View RelatedI couldn't see any indication that Flash 10.1 was on my phone after updating using the latest RUU (S-off and rerooted). So I downloaded the APK and tried to install it, and the OS thinks it's there, but will permit neither launching nor uninstalling. I'm sure there might be other info needed, but I would greatly appreciate if someone might have some thoughts about how to resolve this.

View 12 Replies View RelatedI listen to a large number of podcasts weekly. I use to download them to my computer and then transfer them to a folder on my Moto Droid called PODCASTS. This folder would show up under PLAYLISTS in the native android music player. This makes it very easy to listen to one podcast after the other. The HTC music player does not work this way. I drop a bunch of podcasts into a PODCAST folder and they are scattered throughout the music app. Has anyone found a way to put files directly in a playlist when accessing the device as a drive?
