HTC Incredible :: Should I Root Or Install OTA First?
Jul 26, 2010
I have a Droid Incredible on the way and it should be here in about 2 weeks *crosses fingers*.I want to get all the software I will need downloaded ahead of time, and I am confused about the order in which to do things.I have previously rooted and installed roms on my wife's Motorola Droid so I am somewhat familiar with the process. My plan is to have a rooted and OTA updated Incredible running 2.1 until there are 2.2 roms that function well with the camera. What I need to know is what order to install things. Do I install the leaked OTA update and then root?Is the OTA update officially out yet, and if so should I just wait for that to download and install before rooting?

To install jager's froyo rom does my Incredible need root? Or can I simply install it. According to what I have encountered I do not have sufficient permissions to run the "update.zip" for the rom. Can anyone help?

I woke up this morning to have a 2.2 system update available, but I don't wanna lose root by installing it. First of all I rooted using mejdam 10 minute root on youtube and I originally only wanted it for the flashlight and the WiFi tether, I rely on my WiFi tether now and well I want 2.2 also, I've never nandroid backup my phone or anything like that I just rooted and left it. What should I do now that I wanna install 2.2 and keep root? What would be the steps of going about this.

Do I need to root my phone to install apps with ADB?I think I followed all of the tutorials online for setting up ADB right, but when I try to install an app, it says "access denied" or something.Do I need root to get this to work, or am I doing something else wrong?

So the HTC sense is nice and pretty, but I think it causes some unnecessary flakiness. Is there anyway to install a plain 2.1 os? Or is this not possible with no root access?

So the other day I went to download an app out of the market. The download finished, but it seems my phone decided to auto-reboot itself in the midst of the installation. After the reboot completes, I go back to the market, reselect the app, and it's hung at "Installing..." (And when I say "hung," the market is still fully functional except that one app). I'm given no option to cancel the installation. Killing the market app then trying to go back in has no effect - same deal. Hung on install. Another reboot didn't help.
Is there any way to delete the install package and make the market forget I even tried in the first place?
It's Angry Birds (wanted to see what all the fuss was about), but the install seems to have failed in a way that any app install could have failed.

I have an Incredible, so not familiar with Eris, but I want to root my wife's phone and install XtrSense 4.1, as it seems to be a fast and stable ROM with no tweaks needed.
So, here are the steps:
1) One click root on XDA, install the rootme.zip file, reboot and should be rooted.
2) Run a nandroid backup
3) copy Xtr ROM to root of SD, wipe, and flash via "install from zip"
Is there anything I am missing, seems straightforward. The one step that confused me is this:
Wipe SD:ext partition
What does that step do?

My wife has an Eris, and the battery life isn't even 12 hours lately. I'd like to root her Eris and install a kernel to allow it to run slower while in standby. I searched this forum, and didn't see many if any threads dedicated to only kernels. Am I missing something? I saw the guide to rooting, and installing new roms, I want to leave everything in tact, just allow underclocking.

So I'm not quite ready to root yet but wanted to do some more custimization to my phone. I read in another forum about being able to change the boot animation without root. It worked so after reading about some of you all that don't like the sprint 4g boot animation I figured I'd share.
First, you need to install android SDK. Bill did a good guide to installing it: http://androidforums.com/tips-tricks-evo-4g/90418-how-install-android-sdk.html.
When I was installing the sdk I had a lot of trouble with installing the driver for the EVO for whatever reason. Eventually this is what worked for me:
dc50 Hideaway: ADB Driver for HTC Evo 4G
Once you get SDK installed find a new boot animation. There are a few here: [url]
The boot animation should be a zip file named "bootanimation". Put this file in the tools folder of the sdk.
Open up command prompt (Start>Run>type "cmd"). In command prompt you need to get to the sdk tools folder. To do this I typed in "cd C:Documents and SettingsUserDesktopandroid-sdk-windows ools" where "User"=you user name. This may be different depending on your version of windows and where you unpacked sdk.
Now from here you can check to make sure your device is connected by typing in "adb devices". If you get a line that says "List of Devices Attached" and then a line with some numbers and letters followed by "device" you are conneceted. If not go back a try reinstalling Android SDK.
Now with the bootanimation.zip file in the tools folder and command prompt pointing to the tools folder type "adb push bootanimation.zip /data/local". Make sure you put the spaces in or it won't work.
Restart your phone and you should see the new boot animation instead of the Sprint 4G one.

My current GS3 apparently had water damage, and a new one is coming from the insurance tomorrow. I figured that since the warranty is up and the insurance won't replace it again, I may as well finally root and flash a custom rom. From my poking around the internet, I like CyanogenMod 10.1. I am on AT&T.
I've only attempted a root once before with this current phone, which I think worked, but I abandoned the project months ago and don't remember. In any case, besides that, I've never rooted or flashed a rom before.
After further poking around on the internet, these are the sources I'm planning on using to successfully root and rom:
Rooting: How to Root the Samsung Galaxy S3 " XDA Developer TV " xda-developers
And for the ROM, I'm going to follow this video:
I understand that after rooting, I have to create a backup (using that Titan Backup app in the video I think?" and i am going to use Goo Manager to download the ROM and gapps. I saw another video that had me move files from the computer to my phone, but they didn't do any backing up, and apparently that's necessary.
What does it mean to "trip a flash counter"? And what is a toolkit, and do I need it?

I flashed the official nightly build of CyanogenMod on my Samsung Galaxy Ace.
The root explorer just closes when I try to open it. So I removed it, and installed it via an apk, same issue.
And when I download it from the market, it says it's "Purchased", but when I try to download it, it gives me a 403 error.

This was linked to within the Froyo Tips thread above however the link connected to a Blog where the blogger no longer wished to support the advice contained therein. He also appears to have taken down his blog completely since then.So here is the guide to installing your apps to SD by default by using the Android SDK and your phone attached to your PC under Disk drive while having USB Debugging active, to have all apps you download install to SD by default.

I have seen many threads & posts from confused Hero owners. The forum is cluttered full of them. So I thought it would be good for all the information to reside in one thread and if people are still having problems then they should make a new thread. I understand that it is sometimes difficult to find the right instructions as there are conflicting posts / thread everywhere.
There are so many guides out there. Each more confusing than the last. So many unnecessary steps. This way is quick and easy.
Note: I have to the best of my knowledge checked and performed the following guides myself and confirm that they work. If my spelling or grammar is wrong, my methods are wrong, you'd like to add something or whatever please Private Message me with the URL of the post and please specify what is wrong. I will try and change / update it ASAP.
I take no responsibility for anything that may go wrong. It is your responsibility to BACKUP everything periodically. The end.
The following Guides are for GSM Hero's Only (Europe)... US / Sprint Users Please See Here
I have made the following GUIDES:-
What Is Rooting & The Benefits & The Downsides
Which Method Do I Use? (Searchable by firmware) <-- Click Me FIRST
How To ROOT
How To Install A Custom ROM
How To Update The Radio
How To Back Up & Restore Your Phone
How to Back Up Your Applications
I am on T-Mobile/3UK & I can't Root my phone / upgrade to a customROM
I Am On Orange [2.73.61.66 Firmware] & I Cant Use Any Instant Rooting Methods
WORK IN PROGRESS // Thanks for your support. I would like to thank Modaco, its users and people on this forum for helpful information which enabled me to put this guide together after my own experiences and frustration at finding contradicting info.
My Work Here Is Done. My Time With My Beloved Hero (The Best Phone I Have Ever Had To Date)... Is Now Over. I Have A Samsung Galaxy S Now ^_^ So Unfortunately This Guide Is No Longer Going To Be Updated/Supported. However Everything Within This Guide Will Still Work & Will Be Valid For Ever & Ever ... Feel Free To PM Me If The Thread Needs Updating...I Won't Leave My Fellow Hero Users Completely.

Is there any word when a method to root and install custom firmwares on the Arc (such like Cyagonmod or something)?
I've tried just about most of the common methods I've found so far, and I've gotten nothing.
The only thing I can think of is the fact that the Arc is suspiciously similar to the Nexus 7, so can look into root and see if a port can be made for the Arc.
