HTC Incredible :: Root Before The 2.2 OTA?
Aug 13, 2010
So I was reading about the upcoming (maybe) 2.2 OTA. The poster said something like, "Make sure to root with Unrevoked forever before installing the OTA, or you might not be able to root again (at least for awhile)".
Is this true?
Can I root with "Unrevoked Forever" and install the 2.2 OTA (not a leaked version, but the actual version that actually comes over the air?). I don't want any custom roms or custom radios or anything, just the 2.2 OTA and the ability to install custom roms in the future (namely 3.0 if it ever comes out).
So do I need to use "Unrevoked Forever", or risk never being able to root after installing 2.2 OTA?

Ok, I ran the new beta flash, it appeared to do what it was supposed to do, it got hung up on the clockwork recovery page, but rebooted. Now, how do I tell if I am rooted?

I had a rooted Incredible using this method before however I had a problem with the on screen keyboard so I got a replacement. The replacement just came yesterday. Now I am rooting the replacement and the Unrevoked 3 program gets stuck at "Waiting for root... (Safe to restart if this doesn't work)"
I have the HBOOT drivers installed and my phone comes up in device manager as "Android Composite ADB Interface"
Did they apply a new update to the phone that prevents rooting? If so how long before I can get around it?

Im still slightly confused on the subject of rooting. all I want to be able to do is wifi tether on my incredible. Can you root without having a different rom? or do you have to use a new one to get the permissions for apps such as wifi tether? basically, can I get wifi tethering while still maintaining my ability to update to 2.2 when it arrives?

I rooted my phone when the root first became available using the "tricky" method...if I just want to get the OTA update directly from verizon when it becomes available, what should I do?
1) Can i get the OTA from verizon even tho I'm rooted?
2) Once the OTA is done can I root again?

Will the unrevoked root work with the update to 2.2. I do mean the over the air update that I just installed this morning. Obviously, this is a stock phone, otherwise the OTA wouldnt work.

How do you get adb shell to work outside of the root procedure?. I successfully rooted my incredible, but I wanted to go back and edit some system files using adb. I have to switch sd cards to get the root process to work, so I don't want to have to open up my phone and switch the card every time I use adb.

I have a stock incredible and I'd like to upgrade to 2.2 (I have the prompt for the OTA update) but I'd also like to root and retain that root on my phone, which I understand I should do before the OTA update.

So I rooted my Incredible last week, played around with CM6, then ended up using my nandroid backup to restore the phone. Everything worked like normal. Yesterday I decided to use the unrevoked forever tool and update my radio to 2.15 and play around with the leaked OTA ROM. Again I restored a nandroid backup to get things back to normal. Now my phone is getting the 2.2 update from Verizon, but when I tell it to install, it starts as normal, but ends up with an error screen with the green android, and a yellow triangle with an exclamation point. From this screen if I push Power I am in ClockworkMod Recovery and able to reboot my phone. Once I reboot my phone I am still running 2.1, and System Updates tells me my phone is up to date.

So i pretty much know nothing about computer or Rom's if thats what you call it nor Droid system. So i heard that you can get better battery life on your Incredible and you can also make you phone faster. Here is what i have done so far. I install Unrevoked on my mac and connected to my phone and did its stuff. after all said and done i have and Icon on my phone called SuperUser which i have no idea what that is. Then I read that i need to download busybox , Ok! But now what? I can't seem to understand anything. All i wanted was to remove some of the preinstall apps and get a faster CPU and get better battery life. But since i dont know what i am doing and getting frustrated i just want to go back on how my phone came when it came out the box. I am idiot to this so please i need step by step on what i need to do. I have a MAC not a windows computer. Also if you think that you can walk me through with either project (remove root or what i was orig planning on doing) please send me expecting details.

So I just got my hands on an Incredible. It seems as though the easiest way to root "was" unrevoked which as I understand is broken with the latest OTA, which I noobily accepted last night as I activated my phone. Is there another manual way to root this guy?

I have a Droid Incredible on the way and it should be here in about 2 weeks *crosses fingers*.I want to get all the software I will need downloaded ahead of time, and I am confused about the order in which to do things.I have previously rooted and installed roms on my wife's Motorola Droid so I am somewhat familiar with the process. My plan is to have a rooted and OTA updated Incredible running 2.1 until there are 2.2 roms that function well with the camera. What I need to know is what order to install things. Do I install the leaked OTA update and then root?Is the OTA update officially out yet, and if so should I just wait for that to download and install before rooting?

This is the RUU, and it will wipe your phone, Clean. (It won't wipe your SD card) , but it's up to you. It's the exact same as the official that Verizon is rolling out, except a Preferred Roaming List, which just determines what towers you can connect to. This will not root your phone.

I am currently rooted and held off my OTA update because I haven't done the Unrevoked Forever and S-Off yet. I'm always a fan of competely wiping devices then installing the OS fresh so I'm considering just ditching all that and doing the RUU. Can I acheive root if I do this?

I'd like to use the new Unrevoked root on my Incredible. The only problem right now is that I'd like to know my path back to root-free and stock. That path currently involves wiping everything, that kinda sucks.
Right now I'm scattered throughout backups. Lookout for contacts/call history/pictures, SMS Backup/Restore for that, VZW Backup Assistant, ASTRO for my apps. I feel like restoring all that would be a pain.
Is there a way to snapshot my current pre-root state so I can restore it if I decide to unroot?

I can't find another reason to root my phone other than use a LED Flashlight. I don't really know what I can do with root that is so special that everyone thinks is so amazing. I don't want custom roms, and I want to be able to get the OTA update naturally. Can somebody tell me what is worth voiding their warranty so much for?
