HTC Incredible :: OTA Update With Root
Jul 19, 2010
I rooted my phone when the root first became available using the "tricky" method...if I just want to get the OTA update directly from verizon when it becomes available, what should I do?
1) Can i get the OTA from verizon even tho I'm rooted?
2) Once the OTA is done can I root again?

Im still slightly confused on the subject of rooting. all I want to be able to do is wifi tether on my incredible. Can you root without having a different rom? or do you have to use a new one to get the permissions for apps such as wifi tether? basically, can I get wifi tethering while still maintaining my ability to update to 2.2 when it arrives?

Will the unrevoked root work with the update to 2.2. I do mean the over the air update that I just installed this morning. Obviously, this is a stock phone, otherwise the OTA wouldnt work.

Can I update my phone without removing root? Will it brick my phone, or will I just lose root?

So I rooted my Incredible last week, played around with CM6, then ended up using my nandroid backup to restore the phone. Everything worked like normal. Yesterday I decided to use the unrevoked forever tool and update my radio to 2.15 and play around with the leaked OTA ROM. Again I restored a nandroid backup to get things back to normal. Now my phone is getting the 2.2 update from Verizon, but when I tell it to install, it starts as normal, but ends up with an error screen with the green android, and a yellow triangle with an exclamation point. From this screen if I push Power I am in ClockworkMod Recovery and able to reboot my phone. Once I reboot my phone I am still running 2.1, and System Updates tells me my phone is up to date.

I rooted my inc back in July and received the ota.I did nothing but accept the ota. It downloaded and installed with NO problems. I did loose root, but not a problem since the only thing I used root for was the led flashlight. With the new Sense, an HTC led flashlight is installed. The new OS is faster and liking it. Another nice feature is the numeric phone lock.I also gained a WiFi hotspot and 720p video.I'm sure there is a bunch more features added.I am still exploring the new OS. Overall, I'm satisfied and not really concerned I'm not a su on the phone.

I saw the forum thread here: Cant root, is it the latest ota software update? I can't seem to use any apps that require root access after android update earlier this week. I have an HTC Incredible, 2.2, rooted with un revoked. I can't seem to re-root it either. Not sure if this is to do with the update or not.

I rooted my phone with Unrevoked Forever and installed the Virtuous 2.2 ROM a while ago, anyway, I'm getting a notification about a system Update that wants to install Verizon Bloatware on my phone, so I was gonna install it then promptly delete the apps just to get rid of the notifications, but when I go to install, it counts down from 10 to restart, then does nothing. So the notifications keep coming up, no matter how many times I try it.

I've been wanting to root my phone for a while, but I haven't had the bills to do it. I saw unrevoked released what looks like a fail proof way of doing it and I'm seriously considering taking the plunge. I'm debating whether or not to root it now or wait to see if this "possible" froyo update comes out later this month.

I am not responsible if this does not work for your case or if you damage your phone in any way. This information is provided to attempt to help other people in the community that were having the same issues I was for the OTA. The way I did my OTA and got root back is this: (simplified version)
- install unrevoked 3, and unrevoked forevor (s-off)
- wait for OTA message
- click install later
- reboot into recovery
- do nand backup
- find and download stock 2.1 recovery zip file
http://adrynalyne.us/?p=41 (stock recovery is here)
- find and download (to a different location) clockworks mod zip file
http://unrevoked.com/rootwiki/doku.php/public/forever
(near the bottom of the page)
- place stock 2.1 recovery file on root of sd card
- reboot into hboot
- hboot will ask to install recovery update
- click yes
- reboot back to OS
- wait for OTA message
- click install now
- wait for 10-30 minutes while phone does OTA update
- place clockworksmod zip file onto root of sd card (overwriting/deleting the 2.1 stock zip file in the process)
- reboot into Hboot
- when asked allow hboot to update recovery again
- reboot phone
- uninstall any old super user program you had on your phone
- install this new one using the information on this link
[APP] Superuser 2.3.5 - Now on the Market [2010-08-28] - xda-developers
You should now have wonderful froyo with root!

I have followed every guide that I can find. I cannot get my phone to either receive the OTA update and I cannot get it to update manually. This is the error that I get:
assert failed: file_getprop ("/system/build.prop","ro.build.fingerprint") == "verizon/inc/inc/inc:2.1-update1/ERE27/161494:user/release-keys" || file.getprop ("/system.build.prop","ro.build.fingerprint") == "verizon_wwe/inc/inc/inc:2.2/FRF91/231334:user/release-keys
E:Error in /sdcard/update.zip
(Status 7)
Installation aborted.
I had a stock Incredible that I rooted with Unrevoked3. I then ran Unrevoked Forever on it and then downgraded to remove root. I placed the 2.2 Update on the sdcard and went through the recovery menu to select it and then try to install it. The above error is what I get everytime I try to update. This is also the same error I got when I tried to accept the OTA when I was rooted (in my grogginess in the morning when I woke up and saw the OTA, I just kept hitting ok having completely forgotten about my phone being rooted). I don't know much about coding other than the little I use to do with Java/C++/HTML in school, but what I am getting out of this is my phone does not like the 2.2 update file. I am assuming that it may have an MD5 Hash in verifying/installing the file that it does not like?

I was sitting at my desk and work and saw the "System Update" notification pop up on my phone. I grabbed my phone, stood up, and showed my coworker. Unfortunately, in doing so I accidentally pressed "Update Now." I had planned to post-pone the update until I got home so I could Unrevoked Forever and S-Off. It's currently in the middle of installing (little ! icon w/ the Android guy next to it). I guess I'm going to lose my root. Any idea how long I'll have to wait to gain it back?

I rooted my evo a couple of weeks ago and its been pretty great, but I'm noticing an issue with my messaging app. Its only in the messaging app that the phone does this, but it wont scroll up in my messaging threads. I scroll up, it will stay there for a second, then it will jump all the way back to the bottom. I just noticed this today. It does not do this when I'm outside of message threads, nor does it do this when I'm browsing the internet.
Anyway, I was thinking maybe the root and the 1.32.653.1 rom were the problem. So I was looking to either update to the 653.6 while in root, or to undo my root and update to the 653.6 and use the unrevoked method, which seems to be doing all the things that I want my rooted phone to do (manage the overclocking settings in order to conserve battery life).

I thought one of the things the guy at Best Buy did this morning was update the phone, but it turns out that hasn't yet happened. I hear updating the phone kills the ability to root. I -just- got done downloading PC36IMG.zip, but now I wonder...should I root, or just do the update for now and wait for another way to root the phone later?

My questions:
1. Having received the official evo update (2.1?) to my phone ~2-3 weeks ago, can I still unroot my phone?
2. It seems that there are multiple avenues to unrooting the evo. Is one way superior to the others, or at least more easily performed?
3. For those who unrooted their phones already, name the three features you most enjoy now that your phone is unrooted.
4. Any regrets about unrooting your phone?
5. I understand that some people bricked their phones when they tried to update their unrooted phones. Were these phones truly rendered useless, or is there a way to reverse the process?

I just rooted earlier this week with unrEVOked. If I unroot and take tomorrow's OTA software update to 3.29.651.5 will I be able to root right away, or will I have to wait for a "root update"? I'm really interested in 30 fps uncapped (and I love my wireless tether).
See this xda post for information about the update:

Help? I'm stuck with the superuser appand can't get rid of it. I tried a factory reset and it didn't work...

I was rooted with unprovoked and have not experienced a single problem since the update. I clicked on unprovoked and then checked out the tether app. It starts up fine with no problems. Wasn't the update supposed to make unprovoked not work?

I know there are a few threads like this out there but I was wondering is there still a big advantage to root your phone after you update to 2.2 ? I am new at all this and don't really understand the lingo lol. But is there a big difference from a rooted phone to a phone updated? I am thinking of doing it to my phone but I really dont know much about it and will most likely not get to far into the guts of my phone.
