HTC Incredible :: How To Get Root And Official OTA 2.2?
Aug 28, 2010
I have a stock incredible and I'd like to upgrade to 2.2 (I have the prompt for the OTA update) but I'd also like to root and retain that root on my phone, which I understand I should do before the OTA update.

OK, some of us have the OTA update, and some of us got the update by downloading the update.zip (I downloaded the update from here.)
Froyo is nice however it is not clean. There is so much bloatware on this that i cant wait to get rooted again so i can get rid of all of it.
Has anyone done this yet? Can it be done yet?

I couldn't find the answer to my question even though this thread seems to dance around it.
There is pretty much only ONE reason i want root on my droid x: to rename all VZW bloatware. That's it. I don't want to overclock. I don't want to get rid of blur. I don't want to custom theme or anything. All i want is to rename the bloatware apk's to bak's.
So my question is, if i root my original 2.1 droid x and change the bloatware app names, when the OTA is getting pushed, will i receive it and be able to upgrade just fine? I realize that if i get the official 2.2 it should break my root and i'm ok with that because right now for me official 2.2 > official 2.1 with bloatware renamed. Mainly since i am confident 2.2 will be rooted soon after it comes out.
Lastly, is the universal and root still the simplest way to root droid x 2.1?

I used this to try to root. How to Root DROID X Running Official Android 2.2 - Droid Life: A Droid Community Blog and well when I hook up my phone to my computer its telling me that it can install the driver. (Its never done this before when I had 2.1) the SDK program wont even do screen shots for me so thats the main reason I am trying to root. I know thats a dumb reason but still. I know this isn't much info but its all I got for you. I did run the root program and it said my phone is now rooted and no errors occurred. I know its not rooted cause the screen shot applications are not working on my phone.

I would like to know if it is possible to upgrade/downgrade an android phone (samsung mostly) with official firmwares without the need to root? The reason is that some testing is needed on these devices and only with official firmwares it would be valid. And at will it would be nice to be able to switch versions for different test purposes.

I've just rooted my s4 i9500 runing official os 4.4.2, im new at this, I rooted my phone so I could get a different experience with it, like overclocking cpu to get faster performance (dont really know how to do this now that I have root access) (not thats runing slow, but just wanted to get the best out of it) Im really new at this I barely learned the process of rooting I've read I can flash a new rom like cyanogenmod (i guess is the best because it gets a lots of reviews) the thing is im not really sure how to do it and also is it worth it?
I want to get the best out of my phone (speed and goodlooks) mostlu because im bored of the original touchwiz.

There have already been several requests for information on how to downgrade back to the official 2.2. The following process will remove root. Whether you need to return a phone or you just want to clean the slate and go back to stock, here is how to get there:
Note: Your SD card MUST be formatted to FAT32 before proceeding. The file will not be recognized otherwise. If you have yet to format, remember that formatting wipes the card. Be sure to copy/move your SD contents to a safe place (PC desktop) and replace after the formatting process. I will not go into the procedure in this thread as it is easily found with a Google search.
1.) Need to return a phone and currently have S-Off? (aka Unrevoked Forever) If so, please visit public:forever [RootWiki] where you can download the latest S-On tool and the process to load to your phone. If you want to keep S-Off and just return to the official 2.2, skip to step 2.
2.) Download the 2.2 PB31IMG.zip (extracted from the official 2.2 RUU)
Mirror 1 (Credit and thanks to Doug Piston for hosting)
Mirror 2
Note the file size (172 MB) and the MD5 (31BB1611A0FA8197D447C0438426717E) to ensure a successful download and file integrity. If you have questions about how to verify MD5, please see post #2 of this thread.
3.) Attach phone to PC with USB debugging on and in disk drive mode.
4.) Access the SD storage and drag the PB31IMG.zip from the desktop onto the root of the SD card (any open area, do not place into a folder).
5.) Swipe down notification bar on phone and change to charge only.
6.) Unplug phone from PC and turn off phone.
7.) Hold volume down while pressing power button to enter hboot.
8.) PB31IMG.zip should be automatically recognized in hboot. Press volume up to continue with update. Do NOT interrupt.
9.) When finished, reboot to stock 2.2 and verify the following information at Menu > Settings > About Phone:
Android Version: 2.2
Baseband Version: 2.15.00.07.28
Software Number: 3.26.605.1
10.) Remove the PB31IMG.zip from the SD card to avoid an inadvertant reload in the future. You are now unrooted and on stock 2.2
Also adding the RUU option for those that are interested. Thanks again to Doug for the upload/host. For those new to RUU, download to a PC and run from there:

Just as the title says, I guess CM6 is officially out for download, but does not come up in Rom Manager, or searched CM's site, and doesn't have a "stable" build listed for DInc.

This phone is living up to its name for me, but I will stay on my topic...Has anyone used the new 'official' twitter app on the INC? I think Peep is fine, but was wondering what I would gain vs peep and if sense would loose any functionality. Thought I would ask here before installing.'

How soon will we be seeing Android 2.2 with Sense UI available for our phone?
Here is the place for people who have credible information (as credible as it usually gets around here, anyway ) to post it, whether it be info about HTC's official release, or even a ROM that can safely be applied to the phone to be up and running with 2.2 + Sense.

I have already removed clockworkmod recovery and now have the stock recovery. All my settings match what the thread said and it keeps on aborting the update. Can anyone help me?

Okay, I'm running the Lite official 2.2 ROM. I'm seeing a lot more BS running in the background than I used to on 2.1 (using System Panel Lite). Another thing I noticed is that no matter how I try to exit an app, none of them go inactive. They are all still listed as active. I'm not hitting "home" to back out, I'm actually hitting the back button.
I didn't used to see this behavior on 2.1-1. If I backed out of an app (gmail, quadrant, youtube, etc) they went to "inactive". Now all are listed as active. I've had a ton of little quirks with this ROM but I've been working through it. It's almost totally up to what I want except the issues of stuff running I don't start ("Mail", BUA, etc) and stuff not going inactive when not in use. I don't use any ATKs or anything, since I know better. But I don't want to have to constantly kill un-needed apps in System Panel because they're not going inactive like they used to.

Finally couldn't take it any longer and installed the RUU then hours later I hear that the Official update.zip is slightly different with a change to gmail (and frankly, at this point, who knows what else.) Also I am seeing "make sure you have the correct "baseband"(?) So for me and I would imagine a few others. Can someone make this a nice clean and complete how to get from RUU to update.zip thread? I have seen a lot of bits and pieces of what it takes.

So I just got done installing the leaked OTA and rooting my phone, but now I've read conflicting reports that when Froyo comes out in a couple weeks, I won't be able to install it without going back to stock 2.1. Even worse, going back to stock means erasing all the data and apps on my phone. I was under the impression that one could use Titanium backup to make sure all apps, data, and settings can be re-imaged to the phone, but then I realized that Titanium only works if you have root, which I won't if I go back to stock. But when the official update comes out, how do I install it without losing all my data? Why can't I just install it on top of the rooted OTA update OS?

Ever since putting a Froyo ROM on my Incredible, I've not been able to get my secondary gmail account to function properly. No automatic syncing from the phone to the cloud. I sometimes will get message pushed out to the phone but not all the time.
I've seen reports that a official OTA for the Evo came out last night that has fixed this gmail problem for them. So I'm wondering if it is possible for someone to get the gmail application off of the OTA release and then allow it to be installed on an Incredible running some version of Froyo.

I wanted to compare the results of the two different methods of installing this update.I wiped everything by installing the leaked RUU 2 days ago and I must say my phone's performance has significantly improved. My quadrant score went from 525 (stock) to 1365 (after installing the leaked Froyo) neither score was rooted.Scrolling seems much faster and the optical pad is a lot smoother.I'm hearing some people who installed the OTA saying that their phone has been laggy and hangs when scrolling.I've been running the official Froyo for the past 2 days and haven't experienced this. Can we get some feedback from some people who have installed the RUU vs OTA.
