HTC Incredible :: Preventing Apps From Starting Themselves

Sep 3, 2010

I did an OS update this am and since doing so, I've noticed that all the apps are starting on their own. I'll run task killer to stop them. However, when I check my phone 5 mins later, another 6 have started. What's the best way to prevent apps from starting on their own?

HTC Incredible :: Preventing Apps from Starting Themselves

General :: Preventing Apps From Auto Starting

Sep 19, 2011

I use the app called "System" and it lists about a dozen apps that are stored in my cache or that are using memory when I have not innitiaited the service or app...

I'm most familiar with computers so I'll relate it to that; is there some type of command line that I can use to stop some of these apps from auto start and being stored. For instance on windows you can 'msconfig' what programs are allowed to start on boot up.

Here is a list of apps that I want to stop: AccuWeather.com, Android Booster, Google Voice, HeyTell, Amazon's Appstore, Market, Music, etc.

Most are cached/ inactive but none the less in my task manager when freeing up memory when I notice things to be lagging I'd imagine these to be guilty. Android Booster always lists these as killed apps as well when optimizing...

Im familiar somewhat with how android works being that it often fills a large portion of your memory with what it wants to and frees space as it is needed but these apps for me are rarely used...

Im big on battery life being Im in and out of Sales accounts and rely on my phone heavily so I dont want these things running in the background sucking up resources. Not to mention I like a snappy phone...

Also, I know their are app freezers and applications you can program to kill apps at a set interval but again I would like the least amount of garbage running as I can .....

HTC Incredible :: Reverting To Stock 2.1 ROM - Preventing Upgrade To 2.2

Sep 4, 2010

When I first bought my incredible, I was ecstatic about how well it performed and everything that it did. Aside from downloading a few apps, I had no desire to augment or root it.

When the 2.2 ROM came out, I have to admit, I was hesitant about installing it because I figured "why mess with a good thing" but my phone was insistent. Every time I unlocked it, it was telling me to upgrade, so finally I did.

I've been miserable ever since.

Apparently this new ROM made the touch screen extra sensitive. So much so that when I hold it (I am LEFT handed) it is constantly thinking I'm touching the home button and responds accordingly. This is because the way I hold it, the thumb side of my hand is near the home button and though it's not pressing it, just being near it, beside it, etc, is enough to trigger it. Even plugging in the phone to charge or link to the computer causes the home button to go crazy.

In addition to this, the camera, which I was so pleased with and took excellent pictures all the time under any circumstance, has now become sub-par. I don't care about 720dp video, I care about taking great pictures, which my Incredible used to do, but now it has problems with lighting, I'm constantly having to adjust the ISO instead of leaving it at automatic, and whereas it used to do fine with people in motion, now these shots are blurry 100% of the time.

This has led me to the conclusion that I need to somehow get my phone back to the 2.1 ROM.

Now, I've searched the forums and I've found two sets of instructions that seem to both be getting me to what I want.

One is
How to downgrade and root your DInc from 2.2 |

The other is
Unroot - The Incredible List

Considering I've never rooted my phone at any point and I'm trying to get back to the original 2.1 (unrooted) Incredible ROM that came with my phone, I was wondering which set of instructions is for me (or is there another I have not seen).

I also wanted to make sure that PB31IMG.zip is the ROM I'm looking for as both reference that same file. I want to make sure this will get me back to the original 2.1 where I want to be.

My second question is this, once I get back to 2.1, how do I keep my phone from wanting the upgrade? I do not want to go to 2.2 and if I recall, when the prompt came up, I only had the option to "Install Now" or "Install Later"... there was no "Do Not Install" option.

I would like to go back to 2.1 and STAY THERE without being pestered to upgrade every 5 minutes!

Just so you know, though I've never rooted a phone before, I'm not skittish about this process, I'm a network administrator, I've hacked windows mobile phones before and though this is Linux, I'm confident that given instructions, I can follow them correctly. In addition, I'm not the least bit concerned about the potential of losing all my data or apps or even "bricking" my phone. I know it's a risk and I'm prepared to take it.

Android :: Apps Starting Up By Themselves

Nov 7, 2009

I've moved over from a Samsung Glyde (aka biggest pos ever) and am so far loving my droid. I'd like to thank everyone that contributed to the app lists/tips/tricks threads. All of it has made moving over to Android so much easier. Really, those kinds of things help us nubs

So far I've only had one real concern with the Droid, and I was wondering if this was unique to my phone, the Droid itself or if its an Android thing.

I downloaded Advance Task Killer as so many have recommended and have noticed that certain apps will simply start themselves running in the background it seems for no other reason than the phone sees the spare memory and fills it up in anticipation that I might run one of them. As you can imagine this is quite frustrating and annoying. Not only does it eat up valuable RAM space but also is eating battery (probably) in the process.

In particular, I notice the Corporate Calender, Voice Dialer, and Visual VM all tend to start themselves up on their own. What's interesting to me about this is I don't even use these applications. In fact, my corporate calendar is not setup, nor have I even opened it once. My phone could be sitting on my desk in sleep mode for an hour and then I'll wake it up and open Task killer to find 10 apps open that I never used.

Samsung Captivate :: Apps Starting By Themselves

Sep 17, 2010

I LOVE this phone, but what is it with these applications starting themsleves in the background? I use the gmail app for my mail, and I am trying to minimize my data usage and everything so I've done the WiFi sleep policy setting, but after I went to bed, I woke up all of these running:

Youtube
Email
Voice
Gmail
Twitter
Gallery
Music Player
Video Player

Granted, I don't think gallery/music/video uses data, but still. It seems weird that they just decide to start up. Is there any way to BLOCK applications from starting up unless I do it myself? Or at least a way to make sure they don't use the data network unless I say? I have ATK, but they still start on their own randomly.

Android :: Apps Starting Automatically At Bootup

I am NOT asking how to prevent these apps to start automatically at bootup, I could see that there are already a few threads for that and I read them. I am just wondering: why do these apps start automatically?
When I look at the list, I see that I rarely use some of these apps. Is this a setting that is defined within the application itself?

HTC EVO 4G :: Apps Running Starting Them / Killing Battery

Jun 13, 2010

I have an EVO and I have a problem with it. I downloaded the app Advanced Task Killer to take care of apps running in the background. However sometimes when I pull it up I find that things like Sprint Navigation, Qik, Voice Dialer, and sometimes others are running without me pulling them up. My question is, how do I keep these apps from doing this, because they kill my battery when they come on and I don't know it?

HTC Droid Eris :: 2.1 Auto Starting Apps

Mar 8, 2010

I loaded ATK onto 2.1 which tells me that more apps are running than the built in proc manager does. So I killed everything except clock. Put the phone to sleep, and came back an hour later to find that Clock, Voice Dialer, MP3 Store, Settings, Shopper, Google Voice, Mail, Messages, chompSMS, and Handcent are all running.

Now, I have sent/received a few texts, so that'd explain the messages, chomp and handcent (still screwing with figuring out which one I want, but only Chomp is set to notify).

This is the third time I've done this today, so can confirm it's no accident. I have never used the MP3 app, don't even have any music on the phone, so no idea why that or for that matter, Voice Dialer, Shopper, or Mail are even running. I've never launched any of them.

HTC Desire :: Apps Running Since 2.2 Update / Automatically Starting

Aug 31, 2010

Got a problem since 2.2 thats bugging me and draining battery life, in 2.1 I'd used Advanced Task Killer to kill all Apps I did'nt want which was fine, more often than not it was just Apps i'd manually started that popped up for killing. Now I find in 2.2 that theres Apps that start running without me even opening them and sometimes its 7-8 Apps at once which cant be good for battery life (and I've noticed a drop in that). Anyone else finding this? Anyway to stop apps Automatically starting once I connect to the Internet for example? as alot of them pop up after I do that, but other times the phones on idle and I select ATK and theres some appeared on it, last thing I want to do is check ATK every 10mines just to save battery.

General :: Stopping Unwanted Apps From Automatically Starting?

May 8, 2012

I have an Acer A100 tablet that I've upgraded to ICS (the upgrade went very smoothly, by the way). But under both ICS and the original Honeycomb, the Android OS has an annoying habit of starting a bunch of apps automatically. Facebook, Google Maps, media players and a whole host of apps that I do NOT want to start all by themselves. I found an "Advanced Task Manager" that will check every 5 minutes and kill unwanted apps automatically. But every time I check it there are still half a dozen apps running in the background that I don't want.

If it were just one or two apps, I would simply uninstall them. But it seems like half the factory apps are intent on restarting themselves no matter how many times they're turned off. My Acer has a very small battery, and I suspect I'd get much better battery life if it would only run the apps that I start manually.

Other than email and the system update manager, I really don't want any apps running in the background. And when I turn an app off, I want it to stay off until I restart it. Is there a way to edit the list of programs that start automatically? Do they all have to be disabled individually? I've checked a few of the apps, and don't see any way to disable the "automatic log-in", "check for new data" or whatever each program might call it's annoying insistence on starting whenever it wants to.

Samsung Galaxy S :: Apps Stuck At Starting Download Forever

Jul 12, 2010

I got my new Galaxy S one month back. I have no problems with any other functionality but Android Market. I can browse apps, but when I click install each get stuck at "Starting download..." screen, and never starts or fails. I had kept it for 3 days and still the same. Market / Google Apps / Download Manager clear cache / data does not help even. Phone restart also does not help.So far the solution is do a factory reset and lose all current apps, then install 5 to 6 apps again. Then the same story begins. No more apps can be downloaded. Stuck @ "Starting download..."."Samsung Apps" application works fine.

General :: Stop Apps From Starting Automatically / Overriding App Permissions?

Nov 2, 2012

Some backround on this post. I own 2 android devices, a Samsung Galaxy i9003 and since yesterday, a Nexus 7.

I have ditched my Galaxy as a phone and gone to Blackberry due to battery issues, and apps on my Samsung draining the battery from full to empty in the space of a few hours, so I am now very careful about what I install. Since removing almost all the apps (and the SIM card) from the galaxy, I now have a battery live measured in days (including watching video) rather than hours just sitting doing nothing...

I understand the use of apps auto-starting themselves to provide notifications, such as Facebook, Twitter & Accuweather, but even though I do use these apps for what they are, I do not need them running all the time to provide a notification: The added "work" in starting the app to check updates is worth the extra battery life I get, as if I leave things alone to be automatically managed, my battery life is divided by 10... and having to flip the phone in and out of flight mode is a pain... (especially when you forget to activate it in the afternoon after charging and at 3 AM in the morning you have no battery left to call a taxi...)

So, what I would like to understand is this: Where does android store the information on autostarting applications? Even if I use a task killer, some apps will restart later on. Android must have some sort of task scheduler to restart registered apps after a certain amount of time has passed or on certain events.

how Android manages this list - and more importantly, how to change it, and also if there is any way to override the registered permissions of an app once it has been installed?
