HTC Incredible : Preventing Forced Crapping When Selecting Wallpapers
Apr 30, 2010
To prevent any Android device from forcing you to crop your wallpaper, download the application Wallpaper Set and Save from the marketplace. This works real nice. I found this in the HTC Facebook post.

I did an OS update this am and since doing so, I've noticed that all the apps are starting on their own. I'll run task killer to stop them. However, when I check my phone 5 mins later, another 6 have started. What's the best way to prevent apps from starting on their own?

When I first bought my incredible, I was ecstatic about how well it performed and everything that it did. Aside from downloading a few apps, I had no desire to augment or root it.
When the 2.2 ROM came out, I have to admit, I was hesitant about installing it because I figured "why mess with a good thing" but my phone was insistent. Every time I unlocked it, it was telling me to upgrade, so finally I did.
I've been miserable ever since.
Apparently this new ROM made the touch screen extra sensitive. So much so that when I hold it (I am LEFT handed) it is constantly thinking I'm touching the home button and responds accordingly. This is because the way I hold it, the thumb side of my hand is near the home button and though it's not pressing it, just being near it, beside it, etc, is enough to trigger it. Even plugging in the phone to charge or link to the computer causes the home button to go crazy.
In addition to this, the camera, which I was so pleased with and took excellent pictures all the time under any circumstance, has now become sub-par. I don't care about 720dp video, I care about taking great pictures, which my Incredible used to do, but now it has problems with lighting, I'm constantly having to adjust the ISO instead of leaving it at automatic, and whereas it used to do fine with people in motion, now these shots are blurry 100% of the time.
This has led me to the conclusion that I need to somehow get my phone back to the 2.1 ROM.
Now, I've searched the forums and I've found two sets of instructions that seem to both be getting me to what I want.
One is
How to downgrade and root your DInc from 2.2 |
The other is
Unroot - The Incredible List
Considering I've never rooted my phone at any point and I'm trying to get back to the original 2.1 (unrooted) Incredible ROM that came with my phone, I was wondering which set of instructions is for me (or is there another I have not seen).
I also wanted to make sure that PB31IMG.zip is the ROM I'm looking for as both reference that same file. I want to make sure this will get me back to the original 2.1 where I want to be.
My second question is this, once I get back to 2.1, how do I keep my phone from wanting the upgrade? I do not want to go to 2.2 and if I recall, when the prompt came up, I only had the option to "Install Now" or "Install Later"... there was no "Do Not Install" option.
I would like to go back to 2.1 and STAY THERE without being pestered to upgrade every 5 minutes!
Just so you know, though I've never rooted a phone before, I'm not skittish about this process, I'm a network administrator, I've hacked windows mobile phones before and though this is Linux, I'm confident that given instructions, I can follow them correctly. In addition, I'm not the least bit concerned about the potential of losing all my data or apps or even "bricking" my phone. I know it's a risk and I'm prepared to take it.

Why does the Inc have to be rooted in order to install Froyo? My Motodroid1 was able to install a leaked Froyo without having to root. Is there something more difficult in the software that the Inc uses or is it the actual leaked versions were never designed for an Incredible or what? I really don't understand why we seem to be lagging the Motodroid community in being able to install this. I'm sure someone has a perfectly good explanation and I obviously don't have a clue. I am a newbie with the Inc and I did love my Droid1 until it got run over and no replacements were available. I have to say that so far I am not that impressed with my Incredible. It's slimmer, I rarely used the slide out keyboard on the Droid 1-so I don't miss that, a few things seem to respond a little quicker, but overall I liked my old Droid1 better. The 2.2 I forced on the Droid was a huge improvement over 2.1. The 3d gallery glitches were gone, the mass updates were great, camera worked super. Battery life was always excellent, pics were clear, no dropped calls, always had a signal. Output volume to headphones was a little weak on a motorcycle but I solved that with a nice little pocket amp. I don't mean to knock our phones but... I never had to worry about battery life, poor signal strength, etc. And I miss the 3D gallery after the fix but I did find a thread here to help me install it in the Inc. When 2.2 gets here it should be a nice improvement but I wish battery life wasn't an issue and signal strength was better. I don't feel like spending some pretty good change for a high output battery.

The track pad on my Incredible seems to scroll and select items whenever it feels like it. Pressing on it seems to stop it but often it forces me to select whatever is highlighted to make it stop. I searched but so much clutter I didn't find anything on the forum about it.

So when I get texts, gmail, completed app downloads, etc I get notification icons at the top as usual. When I slide the notification bar down to reveal the nofications and click on an item, the notification screen doesn't hide back to the top of my phone -- it just stays open. I either have to hide it manually or I have to hit the back button, which sometimes exits the app I was trying to open. 2.1 never did this for me, it always hid when choosing an item. Anyone have a solution to this? I've done a factory reset after 2.2 btw. I've also searched support to see if there was a similar problem, no similar threads.

For some reason my wallpapers won't change unless I reboot. When I change scenes or select a different wallpaper it just uses the (Ugly) HTC blurry bubble wallpaper...not even animated. A reboot sets it to the chosen wallpaper but that's a pain to do every time.

When trying to change a wallpaper to either the preloaded photos and wallpapers or a photo I've taken with the phone, the phone reverts to the same image - the preloaded still photo of HTC Sense. Live wallpapers will load correctly, but almost everything else reverts to that one photo. Any thoughts?

How much do Live Wallpapers drain your battery on the Incredible? I used to have one, but I heard it drains your battery a lot, so I got rid of it. But now, I saw that cool Pixel Zombies Live Wallpaper, and decided to reconsider. Has anyone had any experiences or done any tests regarding Live Wallpapers and battery drainage?

Has anyone downloaded Mabilo Wallpapers?
There is a service that enables rotating background wallpaper service.
It is unchecked, yet always running in my background.
I stop it, but every time I restart my phone it pops back into running services.
I'm not even using a wallpaper from the program.

I downloaded System Panel, and its cool as hell I really like it. But after a day went by I noticed I stopped receiving email notifications. So I assumed System Panel was the culprit. So I proceeded to uninstall it and voila, I'm getting email alerts again. So I reinstalled it and made sure all the HTC system services were under exclusion, because I thought that maybe I killed the app that handles the email notifications. Well after reinstall and making sure that all the critical HTC system services were set to exclusions, It started again. No email notifications. What am I doing wrong? The EVO is my first Android Phone and I really like System Panel. I just want them to play nice together. My 24 hours are up so I cant request a refund. But If I cant figure it out I will accept the 3.00 dollar loss and go back with ATK.

An AT&T customer support person told me today that my GPS (even with their AT&T Navigator) will not work with my current SIM card. I have an orange 64K SIM card (63513G) and connect to 3G and HSPDA.
Do I really need a new one or they just trying to force me to get a new data plan.
I have an ancient plan called Media Max (pre smart phone plan) with unlimited data and do not want to change.

I'm trying to implement a times WakeLock in my Application, so this is not a Service.
I want the wakelock to simply prevent screen dimming for 3 min. Looking through the docs, this seems simple enough, but I seem to randomly encounter a Under-Locked exception that I cannot pinpoint.
Here is my WakeLock-related code:
in onCreate: PowerManager pm = (PowerManager) getSystemService(Context.POWER_SERVICE); mWakeLock = pm.newWakeLock(PowerManager.SCREEN_BRIGHT_WAKE_LOCK, TAG); // Adjust time to include user's setting int timeout = WAKELOCK_TIME - Settings.System.getInt(getContentResolver(), SCREEN_OFF_TIMEOUT, 0); if (timeout > 0) {mWakeLock.acquire(timeout);} ...
in onDestroy: if (mWakeLock != null && mWakeLock.isHeld() == true) { try { As you can see, I wrap the release and try to only execute it when necessary as a clean up only. I'm assuming that since I'm aquiring with a timeout, the PowerManager will handle the release in most cases when the timeout expires.
I don't have a copy of the logcat at the moment, but what seems to happen is I get the Under-Locked exception randomly, and at random times (it's not always when WAKELOCK_TIME elapses). The strange thing is that the exception does not point to my code - all the entries point to "internal" Android code.
It's hard to find examples of other people using aquire with timeouts. Any ideas what I could be doing wrong here?

I have an Android (1.5) application which needs to be constantly running when a button is pressed. So, when a button is pressed I would like the phone to remain on and not want the screen or CPU to time-out.
When another button is pressed I would like the phone to be back to normal and time-out as per user settings.

I use the app called "System" and it lists about a dozen apps that are stored in my cache or that are using memory when I have not innitiaited the service or app...
I'm most familiar with computers so I'll relate it to that; is there some type of command line that I can use to stop some of these apps from auto start and being stored. For instance on windows you can 'msconfig' what programs are allowed to start on boot up.
Here is a list of apps that I want to stop: AccuWeather.com, Android Booster, Google Voice, HeyTell, Amazon's Appstore, Market, Music, etc.
Most are cached/ inactive but none the less in my task manager when freeing up memory when I notice things to be lagging I'd imagine these to be guilty. Android Booster always lists these as killed apps as well when optimizing...
Im familiar somewhat with how android works being that it often fills a large portion of your memory with what it wants to and frees space as it is needed but these apps for me are rarely used...
Im big on battery life being Im in and out of Sales accounts and rely on my phone heavily so I dont want these things running in the background sucking up resources. Not to mention I like a snappy phone...
Also, I know their are app freezers and applications you can program to kill apps at a set interval but again I would like the least amount of garbage running as I can .....

I have a static library, Foo, that is used by a shared library, Bar. Bar is the native shared library loaded by my Android app. Foo contains JNI functions that are only called by Java code and not by any C++ code in Bar. Because of this, those JNI functions get stripped out of the static library (Foo) when the shared library (Bar) is built. I'm currently using a slightly hacky method to prevent that from happening. So, in this case, is there a way to tell the compiler to not strip the JNI (or any) functions out when linking?

I've written a web-app in HTML and Javascript for iPhone and Android which involves the dragging and dropping images. You initiate the drag by holding your finger over the image for about a second. However, Android then pops up the message giving me the option to save the image, set it as wallpaper etc.How can I prevent Android from doing this? Is there a metatag I can use? Some javascript?
