HTC Incredible :: International Calling On Phone
Nov 9, 2010
Been calling home on my incredible for a couple of months now and got a nasty surprise when I got my bill.I decided to download Google Voice to call internationally as I found it's rates to be cheaper than Skype.Bill came in and again to my surprise it seems I'm getting charged by Verizon and GV now.SO what is the cheapest way to call internationally from my android phone.is it Skype, do you know a fix for GV, the international plan from Verizon (f that) or another app.

I need to dial a number in Germany which would be +49... now since i can't make that call with my verizon plan i bought a CBS phone card. so i hit 1 for English, 2 for international etc. then when i need to enter the number, on my old phone it worked fine by holding 0 for a while to dial +49. but for some reason that doesn't work with the droid. any ideas?

I've had my Incredible for a month now and feel it is the best phone I've had. I'm coming from a Palm Treo 755P which I thought was good, but now looks like a brick. This morning I tried to make an international call from the Inc. and received a message from VW that the number was not in service or had been changed. My contacts list has a prefix of '+' in front of international numbers. he Palm recognized that and substituted a 011 instead. When I changed the number in the Inc. and added the 011, the call went through with no problem. I have tried international calls with Assisted Dialing on and off, and there is no difference. Is there a special way that international numbers need to be stored on the Inc. for the '+' to be recognized?

Looking for a tip here.
How do you look up a local phone number (for calling) or address (for nav).
I have tried Yellow Pages, magnifying glass (search), and a few other apps but nothing is working great for finding the closest Pizza Hut for example (had a gift certificate). What do you use?

I know there are lots of comments that some folks have issues. Maybe OTA will fix it etc etc. My wife called my from Beijing, China on her Incredible to my Incredible here in California. Sounded PERFECT. Crystal clear no issues on either end. FWIW data has worked perfectly. She can access some sites like Facebook that the wifi in her hotel firewalls. The network itself was pretty amazing too. No call lag whatsoever.

Does anyone know/have experience with avoiding int'l roaming charges? I called verizon and the rep said that I would roam anytime my phone is on, and that I would incur charges, which is NOT what I want. I don't need 3G or any other type of phone or data connection associated with the network. All I want to be able to do is use Fring/skype/googlevoice through a WiFi connection. I've been reading and am getting confused with all this 'APN' on/off stuff. Can't I just put the phone in airport mode and connect to WiFi through my DINC?

Has anyone taken this phone out of the country as of launch day? I heard rumors that the EVO does not have GMS capability and therefore does not work out of the country? I am going on vacation over the 4th of July week to Puerto Vallarta Mexico.

I'm going to be in Japan for 10 days. I read that they put in a 3G network so I called Verizon and our phone do work there! Here's the catch, it's 1.99 per min! They have a Global Data Package that 64.99 unlimited data, so I'm putting that on for the 10 days I'm there. I just got my Dinc last week and I'm a total noob when it comes to it. Is there an app or way to use wifi to place calls cheaper? I've tried searching these forums but I can't find anything.

I am looking for a phone book app which will help me stop making international calls. I want to be able to selectively pick the numbers I never want to dial as I have run a huge bill by mistake. I don't want to put international barring, as I won't be able to text abroad. I just want the app to stop me from calling abroad. Does anyone know of any app or know of a workaround? I currently use Phonebook and I don't know if this is possible with this app.

I'd like to know whether it's possible to have phone numbers converted
into international format when a call is outgoing.
For instance, if a french user (sorry it's the only format i know i
won't make a mistake :-) try to call with the national format :
01.47.12.34.56 then a method will convert it into international format
like this : +33.1.47.12.34.56
I've looked into the doc of the PhoneNumberUtils but i don't know if
there is a method doing what i want.

It doesn't have a front facing camera like Evo BUT the Fring app works perfectly and will let you do video calls with the Incredible. This is actually excellent news for me. A lot of the times I couldn't care less who sees me but I want to see them (daughter, wife, etc.). This way they can look at what I'm looking at while I see them.

Background; I am in the process of writing an Android messaging application that needs to know the current user's phone number. This is then used to connect to other users using the application. My application relies on looking up the user's number from Android's Settings -> About Phone -> Phone identity -> Phone number (this can at times be blank.. but that is a separate problem). I am assuming that the above Phone number contains the user's full number. ie, my UK Android phone shows my number as: +447832xxxxxxxx, where 44 is the UK's international dialing code and 7832 is the operator. Is it safe to assume that all Androids phones would include the international dialing code, which starts with +? I would be indebted if any Android users could have a quick look at their Android settings and confirm whether Phone number is displayed as +international code+operator+number, i.e. US Android sets start with +1xxxxxx.

If the person isn't in my contacts, will it just show me the phone number or will it pull some information about where the number is located and maybe even who is calling?
Most caller IDs can do this for landlines.

Could someone write a tutorial for setting up free voice calling without using VZ minutes or point me to one that works with the Inc? It's kind of confusing because it's not just one app that gets it all going. Help! I'm out of minutes!

Do I really need to change all my phone numbers to have area codes in them? When people call, for example, it shows 619-423-5666 instead of "Work" which is saved as 423-5666. Do I really have to change every one of them and start saving numbers w/ zip code?

Anyone knows how I can call a phone number that appears in the browser? iPhone used to turn those automatically to click-able links that call to the phone app, not so in Android. I've also tried to copy the number and paste it in the phone app, however, it didn't seem to work. Is there another way? Or maybe I should use another browser?

I was wondering if there's any app. that can be used for international call. I'm currently living in U.S. and want to make call to other countries. Please recommend me one that I can use and how to use them It's because my parents are staying in other country. I know GV offers cheap international call but I was not invited still.

ever since 2.1 I have noticed all outgoing calls turn on speakerphone by default - and in coming also trigger speakerphone. PITA to place calls, or get them, and always have to turn off speakerphone button. Anyone know why or how to stop it? I cannot say for sure it is 2.1 issue but that is newest change I recall.

Is there a way to hide my phone number when calling out? I came over from BlackBerry, where there is simply an option to "hide" my phone number on outgoing calls... but I can't seem to do this with my Eris. Someone once suggested that I prefix my contacts with *69... but that seems to prevent caller id from working properly, which just trades one issue for another.
If possible, I would prefer to be selective with who I do this with (it's okay for personal contacts to see my number... but it's not okay for business contacts to see my number).

I've been looking for a clear answer to this, and while a number of people have posted about it, I still am not 100% sure of the answer. I am going on a trip to England in a couple of weeks; I am not planning on using my phone to make calls or send texts while I am there, so I am not looking into any kind of international data plan (I'm not even sure if this exists for Eris). However, I will be driving around quite a bit, and it would be really nice if there was any way to use the GPS navigation. From other posts it seems like this may not be possible, but I'm not sure. I had thought that since GPS uses a satellite signal rather than the cell network, I could put the phone into airplane mode, then just enable satellite reception and I would be all set. Perhaps this doesn't work because the data connection is needed to load the maps ... ? Anyway, if someone could explain to me the ins, outs and possibilities of using GPS in other countries
