I just got my new HTC Hero and I'm still getting to know it at the moment... However I do have a little frustration with it. The trackball will light up and everything when I get a missed call or email or sms etc. and it will keep it up only for some 10 minutes. Any idea how or if it can be set up to light up indefinitely (that is, until i clear the notifications)?

I'm a very light mobile phone user (100 minutes per month at most, often much less, with a sprinkling of texts) and I expect to need intensive mobile internet access only sporadically. Since much of this will be while travelling abroad I don't want to get locked into a large regular commitment to a UK carrier.
If all I wanted was phone access (calls and texts) the obvious answer would be a standard PAYG deal where the value of each top-up stays on the phone indefinitely until I use it. However, so far as I can see, this kind of deal doesn't seem to be available for internet data access (except at ridiculous prices like ?1 per MB).
At reasonable rates per GB all I can find are "rolling" deals where I pay monthly until I cancel or one-off "add-ons" (for example from Three where I can buy 500MB for use within 7 days or 2GB for use within a month). In either case, any allowance I don't use within the period goes to waste. What's more the one-off add-on carries the risk of forgetting to look out for the end of the 7-day or 30-day period and getting hit by penal charges.
I think I've read somewhere that when you have a notification one of the leds at the earpiece flashes-is this correct? On my new hero the trackball flashes but the LED doesn't is this a fault?!

View 2 Replies View RelatedI got the hero today and so far im stoked, the only question i have is i have a notification that wont go away, it says "SYNC - too many contacts deletes. then when u click on it it says "there are 255 deleted items for contacts account ******@gmail.com. What would you like to do? and it gives me 3 options, delete the items, undo the deletes, do nothing for now. ive tried all three options and the notification just comes right back.

View 1 Replies View Relatedit took all day but i finally took 1080p avatar and converted it to mp4 to play on my dx. i transferred the mp4 to my sdcard and started to play. plays better than perfect until i started skipping around the movie and noticed when it gets past a certain time (1:40:50) i think it is it stops playing and cant go past. i try the file thats on my laptop and theres no problem with that. i tried downloading other movie players but they cant even play the file at all.

I noticed that the Upload Upgrade link had disappeared, and I only have the ability to completely remove the application. I uploaded the last update yesterday, so it has been about 15 hours. I'm guessing there is a 24 hour waiting period so that you don't flood the market with updates, but I can't find documentation to confirm.

I tried changing the pulse notification light setting and doing a reboot bit no luck. I googled the problem and a few other people have reported the same problem but no solutions.
I've only tested email notifications and app updates.
I'm new here & was wondering if there was any way to make it so that the trackball blinks more often than it does when I have a notification? It really irritates me how slow the rate is. I have to stare at it for like 10 seconds to know if I have a new message or not in class!
View 24 Replies View RelatedOn the Nexus One (at least in 2.1-update1, and I think in 2.1), there is a setting under Sound & Display: "Pulse notification light". This doesn't seem to be present on the "2.1 with Google APIs" emulator image. I've not yet checked any other devices. I want to set this programmatically without user interaction, in order to make a Locale plugin, so the device can grab my attention when I'm awake at my desk, without having it floodlighting the room when someone spams me at 4am. It's quite bright.
I didn't see it in android.provider.Settings.System where many other things on this screen live, so I had a look in the platform source. There are some relevant parts in NotificationManagerService, in enqueueNotificationWithTag and updateLightsLocked. That goes off into HardwareService which seems well past the point of caring about user settings. I've no idea where this setting is implemented or how I might influence it. I fully expect the answer to be "there is no API for this" (perhaps related to it being Nexus One specific), and that the best I can do is to schedule (using Locale or something else) an Intent of ACTION_DISPLAY_SETTINGS to remind me to set the box manually, which would suck. I'm hoping that I've missed something, or that a Googler is reading this and can tell me that this is planned for addition to the API?
I am developing an app that uses the speech recognizer but I only want the speech recognizer to listen for speech for x number of seconds regardless of when the last speech input was or was not recognized. I looked through the speech recognizer documentation and I didn't see parameter to set the exact time the speech recognizer runs for. How I could accomplish this?
View 2 Replies View RelatedI have a new HTC Hero (running new firmware) and all is fine except for one query regarding the trackball sensitivity.Basically it seems way-too sensitive for me, I find that the slightest touch moves it. For example it's very easy to over-shoot scrolling down a web page with multiple links and select the wrong one.I don't know if this is a feature or a fault since I have no other Hero to compare it with. (May be I have fat fingers!)Also I few (rare) times either the trackball has "moved itself" or something else weird has happend because I've seen the centre homescreen move on its own to the right... Which again makes me wonder whether there an issue with the trackball.

I feel compelled to fill each screen with all the really cool widgets but I presume this will have some performance cost on my phone. I know I could use a different Home app, but I'm trying to use Stock applications wherever possible to reduce app clutter.Trackball - I hardly ever use it, apart from maybe some precision clicking on links in the browser. I just sent an email and without thinking about it used the Trackball to navigate the cursor around my message... Looks like the Trackball might actually be quite useful after all.

View 13 Replies View RelatedI've had my hero for several weeks now, and i've barely used the trackball at all; once or twice for fine tuning the cursor position (functionality that could easily be replicated by a couple of cursor softkeys) and when using the camera (which is only because they *make* you use the trackball).
I wouldn't be surprised if we start to see android phones released in the near future without the trackball.
I wouldn't mind, but i searched the app store and i couldn't find a marble madness clone anywhere! Does anyone use the thing on a regular basis or find it indispensable in any other way? Any good apps or games that make use of it?
While I'm at it - i dont think i've EVER pressed the call button (furthest one on the left), always use the touchscreen instead. I just pressed it now for the first time to see what it would do, and accidentally dialed somebody, they just called me back to see what i wanted, because all they could hear was the clacking of keys as i typed this post.
Is there anyway to get a glowing trackball for notifications like the N1?? That would be kinda cool.

I just got my Hero a few days ago, previously I had an Instinct. So far I love the Hero, but one of my few complaints about it is having to take pictures by pressing the trackball. The trackball just feels odd to press and most of the time I have to press it multiple times for it to take a photo. Anyone have any solutions to this? I doubt there is a way to change this in the settings, but is there an app or something that uses a more convenient button for photos?
