HTC Hero :: Telus HTC Hero Root Guide
Jun 9, 2010
As promised I have created a full step by step root guide. This was designed for the Telus Hero in mind but will work with any GSM Hero. Downgrading process may not be necessary on some models of GSM Hero. I have designed this guide for some one with extremely limited computer knowledge. Note. Windows 7 did give me some trouble so you may want to use Windows XP. I had to sue an XP machine to downgrade.
This took me about 3 days of trial and error. I will be on here and be able to give any one help if they need it. VISIT How To Root your Telus HTC Hero | Bak 2 Basiks for the tutorial. I would post it here but its MASSIVE. Post below with any questions or comments. you can also leave comments on the story. check out my site. I am giving away a Windows 7 Key to help promote the site. I'm going to post up some contest info. on the homepage.

I decided to try and root to install a custom 2.1 rom on my Telus HTC Hero running firmware 1.5 (build 2.73.661.46 CL#74632 release-keys), but I'm failing miserably! I'm following the goldcard method to downgrade before rooting but every time I create a gold card it fails. I remove the card and either insert it into the phone or PC and both tell me it's unrecognised and needs formatting.
I've tried 4 different micro SD cards (stock 2GB, class 4 4GB, class 4 8GB, generic 2GB) all with the same result. Is this because I'm running Windows Vista or Windows 7 (I get the same result on two different laptops)? If I install XP will I have more luck? Or do I just need to keep spending yet more cash on unneeded micro SD cards? Or just keep trying with the same cards over and over agian? Failing that, I'll buy a prepared goldcard if anybody has a spare one lying around?

I am running a Telus Hero on AT&T's network. I know other people are also doing this as well. I was thinking about the 2.1 update due out and was wondering what us unlocked Telus Hero owners should do to get it when it is released. I emailed HTC, and they said this. Quote:

I remember when HTC Hero came out, I was about to buy it but then all the reviews came out and said it was extremely laggy. So I went with an iPhone 3G. But now I noticed that Hero got firmware updates and whatnot, so how does the phone work in terms of lag? Is it still laggy, or what? If any one of you have used an iPhone before, how does it compare to HTC Hero? I love the Android interface, I used to own the Magic, but I cannot deal with lag. And I don't want to get into the hassle of rooting/changing roms and whatnot.

I just got a Telus version of the HTC Hero. Coming from an iPhone, I've been through some of the 'root/jailbreak' scenes, so most things are familiar. However, making the transition to the Anrdoid OS, there's many things I'm not understanding. Currently the Hero is running 1.5 (can that be updated). I tried running Instant Root and it failed. So I tried the Gold Card method (Eh, not too bad) and no luck with that. I'm not sure where to start, since the guides mentioned in the stickies for root don't work for me. I'm just a confused newbie with the Android customization scene.

Im currently still running 1.5 and its not rooted yet(dont want to root it)
I also did some research and it said on the htc website that i have to wait another 7 days for this message to pop back up, and to manually check for an update u need to go to settings>about phone>check for update............but i dont have that option anywhere? ive gone through all of my settings and there is no option to check..

I'm new to this forum. I have been searching around for Android 2.1 to place onto my Hero (GSM) - that IS the one that Telus uses, right? I have found several links which claim to have the download + instructions, but turn out to be dead. Can anyone comment on where to find this update? Is it stable? Are many people running it now? Any ideas when Telus will be releasing the full version?

I am currently deciding on what android phone to buy, and as of now i am almost 100% that i will be getting the HTC Hero with Telus. But i would like to know everyone opinion on it comparing to other smart phones and on getting it at this time. I live in Canada and we dont get the same release for America's phones so i was wondering is there anything worth coming that would be alot better for me to get and wait for? Price is also a very huge factor , i can get the HTC Hero for 79.99$ with a 3-year contract.

Have problems with receiving/installing the much awaited 2.1 update for their T-Mobile Hero (G2 Touch). It took me a while after figuring everything out by myself since both T-Mobile and HTC support have been absolutely inept at providing a solution.
You may have tried moving the phone's date forward a couple of weeks as suggested by T-Mobile and you'll probably get the pop-up notification window, but when you try and install the update the screen goes black with a warning triangle and it freezes.
1- First of all BACK UP all your data! This is because updating the phone will erase all data on your phone and reset it to it's factory state. I use My Back Up Pro, it's very easy to use and you'll be able to restore everything, from your pictures, music files, apps, etc to your messages, contacts and so on. It will even restore all your shortcuts and replace them exactly where you've placed them on your home screen(s). If you have a lot of files I suggest you back them up online as your SD card may not have enough space.
2- Download and install the latest ROM from the HTC website, you can do so here: http://www.htc.com/uk/SupportDownload.aspx?p_id=283&cat=2&dl_id=775.
This is where some of the confusion arises. You may think that you have the latest ROM on your phone (you can check by going to Settings-About phone-Software-Build number. It should be 2.73.110.26. However if you've downloaded it from the T-Mobile support website it is NOT the same as the one on the HTC website DESPITE having the same number, and it's this that's preventing your phone from receiving the notification for the new 2.1 update and installing it. Confusing eh? So, download the ROM update and install it on your phone following the simple instructions.
3- Once your phone has installed the ROM it will restart. Finally, the notification pop-up will appear! Tap 'Install'. The phone will start installing the update without any glitches. You may also get a second pop-up notifying of a second update. Proceed as before. I suggest you do all this over Wi-Fi as it's a huge file.
4- Again, once the installation is complete your phone will restart and you'll be able to enjoy the new features. It's like having a new phone, better interface, better graphics, better performance!
5- Finally re-download My Back Up Pro from the Market and restore all your stuff. Again, this is best done using Wi-Fi. Notice: When restoring data, if your Contacts and Calendar are synched with your GMail account, UNCHECK these from the list that shows up.

Does anyone know if the upcoming Android 2.1 update to the Sprint Hero will allow us to save apps to the SD card without having to root the phone? And also, some things to think about: remember that the Hero only runs class 2 speeds, even if the card is class 6. Do you think this will change once we receive Android 2.1? Because if not, I would imagine that the phone would be slow opening apps (assuming apps to SD will be available).I know that if they do program the Hero to allow class 6 speeds, and allow apps to SD (without root) then the Hero could run MUCH faster than it does now.

This is my first post so greeting to you all. I bought my Hero a couple of weeks ago and heard about rooting, and was just wondering whether it is worth doing. I've seen some videos and shots of rooted Android devices and some of the customization looks pretty damn awesome, but I was wondering what, in a nutshell, the upsides and downsides of rooting are (e.g will it void my warranty?).

Is there a guide or some such that would walk me through rooting my rogers Magic?.. Would like to have the ability to save apps on memory card which is one of the reasons I'm looking at doing this.

Ok so I cant get my dinc rooted, not sure why I have done this and checked it You must install the HOOT-Capable Universal Drivers. This took me a while to figure out how to do this because there is no directions how to check the SD card. I did it by mounting as diskdrive, when I clicked on comp there where 3 new drives, I found the one that was 1.83 gig (my sd card) then I formated as fat32, went back in check it it was correct, then I went and mounted back to charge only as in directions Verify that you have an SD Card installed with at least 2Gb free space. If the SD is smaller than 4Gb, make sure it is FAT32 formatted. Look at it on your PC or Mac to be sure. Now I run unrevoked 3 let it sit for 30 minutes and it stalls out, I have run it 3 times with the same results, unrevoked says: waiting for root, (safe to restart if this doesn't work) also says recovery image clockworkmod recovery.

Everybody is posting about trying out all sorts of different roms on their phones but I'm having trouble figuring out that part of the process.
