This is my first post so greeting to you all. I bought my Hero a couple of weeks ago and heard about rooting, and was just wondering whether it is worth doing. I've seen some videos and shots of rooted Android devices and some of the customization looks pretty damn awesome, but I was wondering what, in a nutshell, the upsides and downsides of rooting are (e.g will it void my warranty?).

I am currently running Evil Eris 3.0 and over clocked with setcpu and it seems to run pretty good. Recently, I have seen messages about Froyo and now an updated Evil Eris 4.0. Can anyone give me a quick run down on the advantages / disadvantages of each ROM? My primary needs are to have the device respond to phone calls quickly and to be able to tether to my laptop when WIFI is not available. However, I do like all the other cool features like sense.

I am on T-Mobile UK and don't want to wait till the end of November to update as I want HD video recording before my baby is born.
I'm currently debating whether I should wait for my carrier (Telus) to provide the Froyo update OTA, or use a downloaded ROM. I'm more or less clear on the advantages/DISadvantages of using a downloaded RUU. I'm less clear on the advantages of waiting for Telus to offer it. I recently got the HTC Desire, and the Telus update could be as late as November. I would really like to install Froyo NOW, because once I start using the phone more and entering contacts and agendas and all of that, I don't want to have to redo all the work I did configuring the phone. Waiting for Telus OTA UPDATE:
* I get the update NOW, and I can get on with my life.
* No risk bricking the phone (biggest thing holding me back!)
* No need to waste an entire SD card, just to keep a backup of the Goldcard image in case of later updates
* I LOSE my 1-year warranty with Telus on the phone if its been hacked (UNLESS I can save version 2.1 and flash it back to that??)
I want to use Samsung Corby to develop a location-based app. I want to know the things that this phone model can offer and the possible issues that I might encounter with it. It's a cheap phone and is available in our country, that's why I chose it.

And also, some things to think about: remember that the Hero only runs class 2 speeds, even if the card is class 6. Do you think this will change once we receive Android 2.1? Because if not, I would imagine that the phone would be slow opening apps (assuming apps to SD will be available).I know that if they do program the Hero to allow class 6 speeds, and allow apps to SD (without root) then the Hero could run MUCH faster than it does now.

View 6 Replies View RelatedOkay so i did the the unrevoked method of rooting my htc hero and it worked fine for a couple months however one morning my phone reset it self and the superuser permissions icon in the apps tray was gone. I tried running through the steps to root it again (How to root your CDMA HTC HERO running Android 2.1 (Windows) | MacHackPC) but the superuser icon never came back. I'm not sure what to do, I even tried pressing the on button and the home to select flash from recovery and that didn't work either. any idea how i can get my phone re-rooted?

View 5 Replies View RelatedAs promised I have created a full step by step root guide. This was designed for the Telus Hero in mind but will work with any GSM Hero. Downgrading process may not be necessary on some models of GSM Hero. I have designed this guide for some one with extremely limited computer knowledge. Note. Windows 7 did give me some trouble so you may want to use Windows XP. I had to sue an XP machine to downgrade.

I have an HTC Hero with cupcake (v1.5) software. The phone is currently unrooted. I am trying to root my phone but find it very difficult to get hold of the software. Either the website has been taken offline or I need to sign up to download software. Maybe there's not much it can do that I am expecting, but I won't know what its all about until I do it and get familiar with it. View 18 Replies View RelatedI am trying to route my HTC Hero (locked to Orange UK).Following jUsT2eXy's instructions :-
1)Download it.
2)Save it to your SD Card ROOT (not in any folders)
3)Open up a file manager on your phone (Download ASTRO File Manager from the marketplace..if you don't have a file manager..)
4)Find the 'InstantRoot.apk' file.
5)Run it.
6)It will say it's been successful
Ok, so on step 4, I am opening ASTRO, clicking InstantRoot, clicking Open App Manager (other displayed option is Browse file), clicking Install (then Install again). It then displays 'Application installed'. However, I get a notification stating 'Install Root failed / Root access was not acquired'. What am I doing wrong? More info if required Firmware = 1.5

I am new to this as the title implies, so a link/instructions on how to install/create these would be what I'm looking for. I also am looking for solutions that do not need to install a new ROM as I just want to mod the current one that I have since i haven't found one I like.
