HTC Hero :: Enabling GPS Satellites - To Check Or Not To Check

Menu - Settings - Location - Enable GPS satellites
It states that enabling this will "require more battery plus view of sky"
When checked, it states "deselect to conserve battery"
So, the question is, should this be enabled?
I imagine for some applications, knowing your precise location should be useful, especially if the turn-by-turn maps are installed and used.
I'm thinking to deselect this, and selecting it at times when I need it.
So, to check or not to check?

I know there isn't a firmware update but for the past 2 days when I go in and check for Firmware updates it says "checking for Firmware update" then it just dissapears, it no longer comes back with "No update available". Anyone else having this problem? I powercycled and pulled the battery and it still does this. It also fails updating my profile and fails updating the PRL. All other data features work just fine.

How in the world do I check my incoming text messages while using the browser? I hear the notification sound but have no notification bar or any menu options to swith apps like my Blackberry had. On a few random occassions I have gotten a menu just like the one my blackberry would give me when I wanted to switch apps, unfortunately I have no idea where it came from or how it got there. I have tried what seems to be everything and can't find any evidence of this menu even existing,

So I was very happy to show off my Hero to my friend who just got his pre. Anyway he was on this website to check his internet speed on his pre and so I wanted to check mine. I was averaging ~500kbps and I hit 1000kbps once. But my friend, he was averaging 8.5MBps, yes MBps. Obviously same network, at the same time. What up wit dat?
We also tried to go to websites we had never been to at the same time and he was beating me pretty handly. Anyway, I wanted to see what you guys were getting? Site is mobilespeedtest.com, then it run test and post results! Whoa, just did it right now and I got 1311kbps.

I am unable to check the notifications screen. I see the icons for new notifications but unable to get to the screen. when I touch the top of the screen and move it down, nothing happens. It was working fine yesterday. Not sure how to fix it and that blinking light is so irritating..

I'm sure most people knew this but what with the premium add on charge of $10, I wanted to be sure. Since I am going through a refi on my mortgage, I didn't want another credit check. Sprint confirmed for me, in writing, that a new check is not required if you are going through an upgrade...only at "original" activation.

I haven't really concerned myself with app piracy; I only have one app under my belt for Android, it's in beta and it's free. I'm about to start development on another app and looking to use ProGuard for obfuscation and LVL as I would like to make it a paid app, and I've been wondering something ever since the news that LVL had been circumvented months ago.Is it possible to check the .apk's signature from within the API? If not currently, perhaps Google might add some code to Android itself or to the API to enable LVL to make sure that the.apk signature matches the signature that Android Market already has on file?

Its just Track ID for the Sony Satio but FREE!
Imagine you are in a club and there is a track you like, use this app and it will tell you who its by and where to download it!

I have taken a lot of steps this evening... I had Stock 2.2 OTA, which I was able to downgrade to 2.1-update1. I tried the unrevoked method a number of times, but perhaps (as some stated) because I have Windows 7 64 bit, I never was able to get through the process.
I used Simple Root, which didn't work initially, but I forced some updates through adb (and looking at Toast Method). In any case, I think I'm rooted now, but not completely sure.
I have a # cursor, instead of a $, so I think that indicates root.. I also can reboot into clockwork recovery.
However, Rom Manager indicates it doesn't have permission, therefore, I can't get any ROMs to update. I tried to rename the ROMs as update.zip, but that didn't work. I noticed the ROM Manager appears to be looking for an older version of Clockwork, and perhaps that why it doesn't recognize it.
In short,
How can I make sure I'm rooted?
How can I update a ROM?
In particular I want a 2.2 ROM (probably Fresh).

Can anyone tell me if and how it is possible to check if the GPS signal is available or not. So not wanting to know if gps is enable or not but if a signal is received. GPSstatus doesn't seem to be about that nor does the onStatusChanged of the LocationListener. At least it doesn't seem to report the signal. What I try to do is display an alert when signal is lost (when driving in a tunnel) and hide the alert as soon as the device is receiving the signal again. So it's not only about the firstFix but every time the signal is lost or back again... Probably not the only person in the world wanting to know this ;-) and it should be possible since the gps icon in the phonedisplay is doing the same.
