HTC Eris :: XtrROM Or XtrSENSE - Advantages And Disadvantages
Sep 27, 2010
I'm a very newly rooted user (tonight)...all is well so far! I'm looking to take the plunge into a custom rom without getting in over my head the first time!
What are the major differences between xtrROM and xtrSENSE?
From what I understand, these are two very popular roms for n00bs to start with.
What are the advantages and disadvantages of each?

I'm currently running xtrsense but am curious about xtrrom and some of the extra features that it has (ie. live wallpapers). I'm currently running a2sd and cache2sd and wondering if all my apps and associated data will still be there and accessible once I run the gscript to turn their features on in xtrROM after wiping my phone and installing? Or should I turn a2sd and cache2sd off while still running Sense so that everything comes back to the phone's internal memory, back them up with Titanium, and turn apps and cache2sd back on once I do the ROM switch?

I'm considering switching roms sometime soon. I have xtrROM currently installed and was considering going to xtrSense. I'm assuming since I already used the dev's method for AP2SD that I won't need to do anything again. Does this mean all my current apps will boot up automatically when I flash xtrSense?

I am currently running Evil Eris 3.0 and over clocked with setcpu and it seems to run pretty good. Recently, I have seen messages about Froyo and now an updated Evil Eris 4.0. Can anyone give me a quick run down on the advantages / disadvantages of each ROM? My primary needs are to have the device respond to phone calls quickly and to be able to tether to my laptop when WIFI is not available. However, I do like all the other cool features like sense.

I've rooted my Incredible, and I keep seeing roms that have Sense disabled. Can anyone point out the advantages of getting rid of Sense, and also what you'd lose if you got rid of it? (I really don't know much about Sense, I just know it was a talking point before the phone came out

I was thinking about debranding so I can get the update as soon as it's released. So I was wondering if some of you would be so kind as to answer some questions for me.First of all, does anybody have a link for an X10i debrand guide:
What are the advantages of debranding
what are the disadvantages of debranding
Are there any known problems after debranding
Can it be undone?
I am on T-Mobile UK and don't want to wait till the end of November to update as I want HD video recording before my baby is born.

I'm currently debating whether I should wait for my carrier (Telus) to provide the Froyo update OTA, or use a downloaded ROM. I'm more or less clear on the advantages/DISadvantages of using a downloaded RUU. I'm less clear on the advantages of waiting for Telus to offer it. I recently got the HTC Desire, and the Telus update could be as late as November. I would really like to install Froyo NOW, because once I start using the phone more and entering contacts and agendas and all of that, I don't want to have to redo all the work I did configuring the phone. Waiting for Telus OTA UPDATE:
* I get the update NOW, and I can get on with my life.
* No risk bricking the phone (biggest thing holding me back!)
* No need to waste an entire SD card, just to keep a backup of the Goldcard image in case of later updates
* I LOSE my 1-year warranty with Telus on the phone if its been hacked (UNLESS I can save version 2.1 and flash it back to that??)

This is my first post so greeting to you all. I bought my Hero a couple of weeks ago and heard about rooting, and was just wondering whether it is worth doing. I've seen some videos and shots of rooted Android devices and some of the customization looks pretty damn awesome, but I was wondering what, in a nutshell, the upsides and downsides of rooting are (e.g will it void my warranty?).

I want to use Samsung Corby to develop a location-based app. I want to know the things that this phone model can offer and the possible issues that I might encounter with it. It's a cheap phone and is available in our country, that's why I chose it.

4.2.1 vs. 4.6, that is.
I'm looking for feedback from xtrSense fans that have used both.
While I am currently using Froyo (CELB 3.2), I want to have a 2.1 ROM "on deck" for those times when I just want every last thing to work flawlessly. (e.g. I have the Froyo undead call bug in mind, and a better camera app).
Probably I would be running it with no cache2sd, no apps2sd, standard OC'ing (245-710), zanfur kernel.
Is there any reason to prefer 4.2.1 over 4.6, when "bug free" is the highest priority?

I'm rooted via the 'rooting for dummies' for two days now. I've had my eris since this spring and was happy until recently my OTA2.1 dialer lag was infuriating. Rooted, started with PlainJaneT2. SO MUCH BETTER! Now using latest xtrROM. EVEN BETTER (imo)! Tempted to try KaosFroyo but there's no browser flash yet? I'll play with xtrROM for awhile longer. do you use setcpu w/ xtrROM. I know it's OC'ed from the get-go (235-710 or something) but I heard 528-604 is the sweet spot for the eris.

Does anyone else have really bad battery life on xtrROM 4.6? I have window animations turned off, have brightness down to like 35% and my battery life is still really bad.
Also on a maybe related note, I only have like 40 MB of internal storage available and I only have like 15 or so apps.
I haven't enabled any of the gscripts yet either.

I'm trying to go from the Froyosense 37 to the xtrROM and I'm not sure I understand the directions I have been trying to follow and I don't want to mess up my phone or end up with a brick
I have repartitioned the SD card like it says to do and "thought" I did a back up of the previous SD card because I copied to my computer. I've downloaded the new xtrROM zip file and from here I am stuck.
These are the instructions which I'm sure are perfectly clear.
TO INSTALL:
1. YOU MUST HAVE A ROOTED PHONE WITH THE AMON_RA RECOVERY PARTITION (my phone is rooted - not sure about the recovery partition)
2. download the base xtrROM .zip file **did that **
3. complete NANDROID backup (not even sure how to do that)
4. copy the .zip file to the root of your sd card (can't find a file on what I saved to my computer that says "root")
5. From amon_ra recovery Wipe data/factory reset, Wipe Dalvik-cache, and Wipe SD:ext partition
6. flash the xtrROM file from sd card
7. reboot - first boot will take a while (i.e. over 10 mins - deodexed ROMs take longer on first boot)
8. complete short setup and let your accounts sync
9. you can save and run GScripts to personalize settings at any time
The only thing I've done with this phone is flash back to the stock ERIS ROM and then back to the Froyo 37 that is currently on it. I got it rooted and running that.

the gscripts in my ROM aren't working. I do everything I'm supposed to do, and everything looks normal, but when I reboot and look at my settings, nothing has changed. I tried with a2sd and that didn't work and I just tried to set the stock CPU and it is still running at 710.

Default ROM Configuration. You do not need to run any scripts unless you would like to change the following default configuration: Live Wallpapers: Not supported (you must run GSript to enable) dalvik.vm.heapsize: 24m
min free memory values: "balanced" (1536,2048,4096,10240,12800,38400)
CPU Settings: Overclocked (Min-245760 Max-710400)
Just In Time Compiler (JIT): Off
Cache Location: Cache2cache On
Apps2sd: Off

I was curious as to what settings people were using on their phone and home launchers (pro or otherwise) to extend battery life on xtrROM. Right now I'm getting pretty crappy battery life, but I'm pretty sure the culprits are all animations and live wall papers. Just want to get a feel for what other things I can give up to keep the things that I enjoy (and yes I enjoy the LWP and animations).
Unrelated question, is any harm done to the phone by keeping USB debugging off? I had to turn it on to use SetCPU.

QuickOffice was an excellent app included in the stock Eris.
It seems to be missing from xtrROM3.03.
I need it back, but don't want to leave this excellent ROM.
Titanium backup seems to have backup the settings of Quickoffice, but not the app itself.
Any way for me to get that app back?

I'm still running stock 2.1 and am pretty happy with it. I've heard so much praise of rooting and it's very tempting. After looking at all the ROMs, xtrSense 4 seems like it would be my top pick because it has SenseUI, it's new and very up-to-date, and it is known to run so well with so few issues.
But I was thinking, what's the point of rooting and going through the process to put on that ROM, when it will be almost the same as stock 2.1?
Are the benefits really worth it? How much more speed, enhancements over stock is it?

I am currently using PlainJane2 and like the ROM a lot and haven't really experienced any problems with it. However, I keep reading about how good XtrSense is and was wondering if anyone has used both of these and can compare them. From the descriptions, they seem fairly similar. I just don't know if XtrSense is faster and/or smoother.
I'm also thinking about trying the "non-sense" route and trying Xtr using either ADW or LauncherPro.

I just flashed xtrROm...and have the following issues:
1. Some random contacts from my gmail account do NOT synch to the phone. No rhyme or reason - just a handfull of contacts are NOT on the phone. I can't make a connection to "Groups", with/without an e-mail or phone#, etc. It just seems completely random.
2. Battery life is horriible. I'm talking about draining to nothing in a few hours (This is a separate issue I will look into). Regarding gmail contacts, it seems that it is constantly doing a Contact Sync - and DOES NOT STOP.

I have an Incredible, so not familiar with Eris, but I want to root my wife's phone and install XtrSense 4.1, as it seems to be a fast and stable ROM with no tweaks needed.
So, here are the steps:
1) One click root on XDA, install the rootme.zip file, reboot and should be rooted.
2) Run a nandroid backup
3) copy Xtr ROM to root of SD, wipe, and flash via "install from zip"
Is there anything I am missing, seems straightforward. The one step that confused me is this:
Wipe SD:ext partition
What does that step do?

I flashed xtrSENSE (my first custom ROM btw) a couple of days ago. As many others have said, things have been just fantastic. It's really like having a new phone. Anyway, today I came across an issue which I doubt would be related to the ROM but I don't have any other ideas.
Once in a while I use a Bluetooth headset. When I tried today, it would not work. It used to work without issue with my stock 2.1 OTA ROM. When I tried it today, Bluetooth would activate on the phone but the headset would never successfully connect. I put the phone in discoverable mode but I never saw the headset appear in the list.

So yesterday I flashed XTRSense4.0.6.1 to both mine and my wife's Eris. My phone has been running great with no problems whatsoever. This afternoon my wife calls me freaking out because her contacts have disappeared... all of them. She said they were all there this morning and all of a sudden they're just gone. I told her to go to Settings, Accounts/Sync, and to Sync Google but that didn't help. She rebooted her phone, synced again and still nothing. Finally I walked her through the process of rebooting into recovery mode, wiping cache, doing a factory reset, and finally a NAND restore which got her back to pre-XTRSense and all her contacts came back without issue. What could have caused this issue and what can I do to prevent future occurrences? I'd really like to flash XTRSense back to her phone because it seemed to fix her other issues but not if its going to cause more problems than it fixes.

Everytime i use the gscript app to make a new script for apps2sd on, and i reboot, it still says that i have 27mb of internal memory. When i used kaos froyo and white widow 4.6 it always said that i had around 100mb of internal memory... i have partitioned my sd card and did the ex2 to ex3.
