HTC Hero :: Ability To Light Up The Screen For New Notifications
Oct 17, 2009
I'm using the new US version of HTC Hero (I believe it's running 1.5) and I noticed the following pretty annoying problem that I cannot seem to tweak.
If a new calendar event or alarm come in, the screen briefly lights up to show what the message is, and then turns off after a short while. That way, I don't have to turn it on, pull down the protective screen, then the notification bar, etc.
However, with email, SMS, gtalk, and the like, the screen doesn't light up. There are settings for having a sound or vibrate, neither of which light up the screen. When I press the Menu or power button, the new notification sits happily in both the lower part of the screen and the notification area.

the latest nightlies gives you the ability to swipe your notifications in the notification bar to the left or right whenever you highlight them. it's pretty cool considering when you click clear everything goes away but now you can actually choose to keep which notifications you want to get rid of.

One thing I find annoying is that when I get a new SMS text message or MMS I have to hit the red button, then swipe the monitor to unlock the phone to read the message, unlike when an incoming phone call comes in, I can just swipe the monitor and it will answer the call. Is there an app out there to make it so that all incoming txt messages will automatically unlock the screen so that I can just reply without having to go through all of the steps simply get to the txt message itself?

I've noticed that when viewing the screen in a darkened room that the screen is actually too dark. Yet in a normal setting that the screen is correctly lit. I've tried increasing the intensity to maximum with the sensor enabled and it's still to dark in the darkened room. Now, I've disabled the sensor entirely and the screen just runs wide open all the time - day or night.
Has anyone else felt that it was too dark in the darkened setting? I'm wondering if there is a setting (probably not yet written for the phone/OS) to vary how linear the light sensor is at darker levels? Maybe a 'minimum darkness' adjustment?

The only thing that I've found that I dislike about this phone is the way it alerts you about new text messages. Is there a way to make your phones screen light up when you receive a text message? Also is there a way to set a reminder like every few minutes that you have a text message? Say if you receive a text message while you're away from the phone then two minutes later the phone vibrates or sounds to remind you that you have a new text.

My MyTouch has several lights i would like to control for status feedback and notifications. What drves me nutz, though, is while my trackball would light up when i got a message or something, this phone would do nothing after the initial notification. My last two phones had a light that would keep flashing until i checked the device. The ones i had before would continue to sound off. What can i use to have something light up every so many seconds until i checked the phone?

I am so confused on notifications. This is what I see happening by default.
SMS/MMS - Trackball
Exchange Email - Trackball
Gmail - Green LED
Google Talk - Green LED
Missed Call - Green LED
In my Settings --> Sound & Display --> Notifications --> Notification flash ... everything is checked for Trackball.
I'm curious is to how this is working for everyone else. I wish the trackball would only light up for SMS/MMS.

With the HTC Magic I rarely use the trackball for anything. My biggest benefit from the trackball is the light flash on certain notifications.
It will blink when you missed a call, have a new voicemail or have a new text message.
Does anyone know if there is a way to change these settings? I would like it to flash on any event in the notification bar (like unread emails).
The sensitivity also seems a little low... are there any apps to increase the sensitivity of the trackball?

I just watched the interview vids on Engadget w/ the Sr Product Mgr for Android.
I know we are getting 2.1. I get this. But I'm unsure if our hardware is going to be able to handle all the 2.1 fanciness we all may be expecting with the 2.1 update.
Erick makes it clear that MANY phones will be getting 2.x+, but that doesnt mean that they will be able to handle GrfxProc intensive features like live backgrounds, Google Earth, or, who know what else.
I dont know what the Hero has got going on inside. For the most part, I really dont care - I just want the phone to do what I want it to do. So, that said, I have no idea if it will be able to do what I want.
Live Backgrounds? Cool, I like it, but I can live w/o it.
Google Earth? Again, nice, but wont shatter my world if I cant have it.
But WHAT'S NEXT? That's the big question. The feature/app I'm concerned about is what might be just around the corner that I cant use. Then more on top of that.
So, I guess all this just to ask: Has anyone seen a spec sheet that says the official minimum requirements to run things like Live BG and Earth? And how does the Hero measure up to that list?

I want Gmail notifications to show in the notification bar, but I don't want the green blinking light on my Droid because it's woken me up sometimes at night while in the dock. How do I disable the green blinking light while leaving all the other notifications?

on my old Samsung phone I had the backlight set to turn off after 30 seconds but this didn't lock the screen. With the Wildfire however with the backlight set to turn off after 30 seconds this also locks the screen. Is there a way to set it so the light goes off without locking the screen?

HTC now has an in store fix for the flying screen syndrome but you can do this at home. Take a credit card or similar type of item and wedge it in between the screen and the phones frame lifting the screen bottom as much as you can without causing further lifting damage. Then remove the battery door and locate the two holes in the photo with the tooth picks. Put a couple drops of crazy glue in each hole then remove the credit cards and quickly clamp the screen down for about a half hour. Clothes pins might work as make shift clamps try therm before starting. If you can get your screen up enough to put the crazy glue tip directly under the screen you can do this also but use very little glue and dot it maybe 4 times across the area for a good even hold then clamp. I would tape off the screen and phone frame just in case some leaks out by accident doing this method. Once the screen is secure use automotive black silicone adhesive sealant I like Permatex brand found at WalMart (now this stuff can also be used to glue the screen down but will take longer to dry 12 hours put it on a tooth pick and shove it under the lifted screen bottom then clamp) You can take this black silicone and dab a small amount around the screen crack and with your finger or a q tip force it in the light leak crack then simply take a tissue and wipe off any excess silicone before it sets you will have no damage to the phone from spilling it just wipe it off. You should now just have a tiny bit shoved in the crack with all the rest wiped off. let it set and you are done!

I finally decided to do it. I had an idea to use the corner of a sheet of paper dabbed in krazy glue to slide up and down the sides and bottom of my phone while holding the screen down for a while. Surprised, it worked like a champ, and any excess glue that got anywhere on the phone was easily removed with acetone. Unless you have very sturdy hands, I would not advise this.

Has anybody else ever been in an SMS (Google Voice), email, or IM conversation with somebody, with your phone continually beeping every 30 seconds when you get a new message? This happens to me a lot. The phone is sitting next to me on my desk, and each time it beeps, I pick it up, push the power button, swipe to unlock, swipe down the notifications bar, and then look to see what's new. After doing this about 30 times in an hour, I have to ask myself, is this really necessary on a modern smartphone? The dumbest dumbphone I know will light up when you get a new text. Now, I have searched high and low, and am I just stupid, or is there no setting or app available to turn the screen on for like 5 seconds and display new notifications as soon as they come in?

These packages are alternative gapps. These Gapps should improve performance. On top of that all apps are up to date (like YouTube). Ultra Light version will also remove unnecessary preinstalled apps like yaam, DSP Audio Manager and so on (and some more gapps of course).

I've had a HTC Evo now for 2/3 weeks, and I love it! But over the last few days it's started to act funny....
What it's doing is lets say I unlock the phone and have it laying on my desk, in the past it would show the screen in portrait orientation....but over the lat 2/3 days its been jumping to landscape and I have to pick up the phone, tilt it to get it back to portrait, and if I lay it back down it will go back to landscape.
This is mainly annoying when checking emails/texts/etc, but also if I am on the train and holding it near my waste, depending on the angle it will bounce back and forth from portrait to landscape!
I originally did a reformat when I bought it, and I am going to do it again shortly to see if that helps....just wondering if anyone else had this problem and if it's fixable (and yes i do want auto rotation)....
My phone has a few other problems such as minor light leakage, and a dead pixel (which I was going to look past and keep the phone)...so if this is something wrong with the hardware it would be a pretty good reason to get a replacement within my 30 days....

I have read and watched many reviews on the Hero and I have yet to hear or read about a notification LED light. I know it sounds like something that isn't important, but to me it is.
