HTC Eris :: Video Text Friendly Roms?
Sep 29, 2010
I have tried a lot of roms and end up always going back to xtrrom. The main problem for me on most roms (kaos, celb, tazz, tainted tenzo, etc...) is that they will not play video texts. they only show the first frame. This is a deal breaker for me. What if any advice do you all have?

When I receive video text messages, it gives me the little button to download...I hit download and it opens up the little video box with a play button. Only problem is, once I hit play, it opens up the screen and seems like it's playing, but it's stuck on a screen grab of the first screen.

I'm new to android, and not so new to Linux. I came here from windows about 2 years ago and now I'm using the latest version of Ubuntu. I'd still consider myself a Linux newb but it is now the only OS I use. I understand that Linux has a tiny market share and all but why isn't this phone more Linux friendly? Why can't I sync my contacts and calendar with any Linux software? I have a gmail account but do I really want to rely on the internet for everything, Finally can any fellow Linux users recommend anything that will make this phone more useful to me, or direct me to threads that will? I'd appreciate any Linux specific tips. apps, or anything on either side of the USB cable.

I'm increasingly feeling like our beloved Droid1, which has been by far the best supported by developers of root, will eventually be abandoned by our developers as more and more smartphones emerge with better specs - from manufacturers who will play ball with us - unlike the Motorola, who is apparently giving the root community the cold shoulder with new encrypted bootloaders and closed exploits. As November approaches, the mass exodus will begin as those who can upgrade early will begin to do so (as some already have who have lines on their accounts that are upgradable now), and the number of Droid1 owners will dwindle more rapidly. My question is - after the dust settles - to which manufacturers will our developers migrate to the most? Which one will be the most root-friendly? I have been spoiled by flashing ROM after ROM after ROM and making all sorts of modifications, and the thought of having to use anything stock turns my stomach.Pete, Fab, Chevy, JRummy, Koush, CyanogenMod team, CVPS - and others (you know who you are) - feel free to guide us in the right direction!

I love Friendstream. I like being able to view my Facebook, Twitter, and Flickr all in one place. But it seems to eat up all my batter power. After I stopped using it my battery lasted a lot longer. Are there any other good battery friendly replacements for Friendstream?

My open-source Android application uses this in an SQL query:
String.format("%f", someDoubleValue);
Unfortunately, in some languages the coma is "," instead of "." and the SQL engine does not like it.
What is the best way to convert a double to a SQL-friendly string on Android?

I have this JSON, which then my activity retrieves to a string:
CODE:......
It can be accessed here as well, although it because it's quite a long string, I've trimmed the above down to display what is needed.
Basically, I want to be able to access the items from "items_last_week" and create a list of them - originally my plan was to have the 'thumbnail' on the left with the 'item' next to it, but from playing around with the SDK today it appears too difficult or impossible to achieve this, so I would be more than happy with just having the 'item' data from 'items_last_week' in the list.
Coming from php I'm struggling to use any of the JSON libraries which are available to Java, as it appears to be much more than a line of code which I will need to deserialize (I think that's the right word) the JSON, and they all appear to require some form of additional class, apart from the JSONArray/JSONObject script I have which doesn't like the fact that items_last_week is nested (again, I think that's the JSON terminology) and takes an awful long time to run on the Android emulator.
So, in effect, I need a (preferably simple) way to pass the items_last_week data to a ListView. I understand I will need a custom adapter which I can probably get my head around but I cannot understand, no matter how much of the day I've just spent trying to figure it out, how to access certain parts of a JSON string..

Just a little heads up out there for people like me who flash roms ten times a day. If you haven't already experienced this issue, you are likely to come across it in the future.
It is probably a good idea to make a backup of the contents of your sd card to keep when flashing from an a2sd enable rom to a non a2sd enabled rom. If your partitioned for a2sd and flash a non a2sd rom it will hold you phone at the boot screen or send you into an endless boot cycle.
I had to take everything off my sd card, re format the card, then flash the rom before I could load everthing back onto the card.
I may be a total noob, and for all you smart people this is probably a no brainer. But if I can keep anyone else from having this headache I thought it best to post it.

Now that I'm rooted, I'm anxious to try out some custom ROMs, but too impatient for Eris-specific ones to be released. Do ya'll think ROMs made for the Hero will work fine on the Eris?

When android 2.2 is released into the wild, will we be able to get ROMs built for the Eris, or will we have to hope that they leak something. Also, thanks you devs for the great work you have put in. I love my Eris now more than ever.

ROM discussions keep popping up in the root threads and is getting difficult to weed through for info. I can see what kind of ROMs are available, but to be honest, I'd really like to hear what people who are using various ones think of them as far as what works and what doesn't work and I'm sure new rooters would find this usefull as well when deciding.
I am currently using Plain Jane and although I like the Sense UI and most everything seems to work ok, I'm finding that I'm not totally happy with it. Little quirks like Facebook not populating my address book, and the font gets a tad hard to read with alot of text.
I don't think it supports a2sd, but I'm not 100% positive on that.
So what is everyone else using and what do you think of it as far as what works and what doesn't work in it.

The one thing I just couldn't get to work was Navigation in Froyo ROMs. It would always get stuck at "Searching for GPS." Well on xda, a fellow member told me to flash the new CFS kernal from Conap ) So this is what I did to finally get the Navigation to work!
1. Reboot into recovery and make a Nandroid backup just in case.
2. Wipe Dalvik cache
3. Flash new CFS kernal [GPL]2.6.29.6 CFS Kernel 9/4/10 - xda-developers(There is also a BFS kernal which is only if you want high benchmarks, CFS is for overall stability)
4. Once rebooted, clear the data of Maps in Settings > Applications > Manage Applications
5. Open up Maps and put in directions to an address, then click Navigate.
6. Once Navigation is up and running, it will get stuck at "Searching for GPS." Make a sandwich, wash dishes, etc.
7. Sooner or later it will get pass the "Searching for GPS" stage. (It took 15 minutes for me)
8. Navigation should be working instantly now, back out of Navigation, try a new address, and Navigation should instantly work without having to go through "Searching for GPS."

I rooted my phone about a month ago and had been running Amon RA's recovery. Today I decided to try out ClockworkMod's recovery because I had heard that it will install packages without a signature. So I flashed the latest Clockwork Recovery. Everything went fine, but when I tried to install any new Roms such as Evil Eris 4.0, nothing happened. It just would reboot into the stock ROM.

Has anybody seen and tried this yet: [Script] Collin_ph Battery Tweak -XDA-developers. (Note that this should work with CyanogenMod 6, Froyo ROMs without a lot of work. Other ROMs would have to be changed by their developers to work. Also note that this requires either a terminal emulator on the phone, or ADB commands from a PC, to be set up, but an app is coming at some point.)

Has anyone else noticed having different signal strengths with different Rom's. I have tried using a bunch of different ones and have noticed that the non-sense Rom's tend to have much weaker signal than the sense Rom's. Any ideas as to why that is? I have never had much of signal in my house, but there seem to be a lot of times that I have no signal (when i used to at least have 1 bar stock) depending on the ROM I'm using at the time.

I didnt do anything but stumble across it and make an update zip, but here it is. this is definitely a new addition to my standard apps.
