Im new to root, just did it a few days ago using root for dummies so i'm running plain jane. I would like to switch to white widow. My question is, how do i do it? Do i just drop it on to the sd root then run it from recovery? or do i have to wipe or delete something first?

I did a search and couldn't find exactly what Im looking for. If there is a thread out there with this info, please let me know so we can remove this thread. I rooted my Incredible yesterday after a couple months of contemplating it (I know ) And I think I want to try Virtuous ROM. So say I go to Virtuous, but end up wanting to go back to how I have it now (stock, root, froyo). Is that going to be hard? Is that what the nandroid backup is for? Say I go to Virtuous, then decide I wanna try Cyanogen. Do I just flash the new one after doing a Nandroid, then if I dont like Cyanogen I can just open the backup and bam it's back to Virtuous? Nub questions I know, but Im skerred. Last night I installed the rotary lockscreen from Virtuous on my stock rooted rom and I really like it. If I decide I dont like it, how hard is it to change something as small as an addon, rather than the whole ROM?
View 5 Replies View RelatedI've installed ROM Manager and I'm trying to use it to backup my current ROM and Flash to another (already download Damage Control). I'm currently running Fresh and want to try Damage Control. Anyway everytime I select the "backup current rom" option it prompts me for the file name and just boot to recovery mode and does nothing. Is there something I need to do to allow ROM Manager to work? I'm I fully rooted if i'm running Fresh? Can someone post instructions on how to flash between ROMs using Rom Manager?

View 2 Replies View RelatedTwo or three months ago, I'd heard all about rooting, but was "afraid" to do it as it looked complicated. Then came along 1-click rooting. I did it and was hooked.
As soon as 2.2 OTA came out, I had to re-root. It wasn't quite as easy to do as the 1-click, but in retrospect, the one-step root for 2.2 was very, very easy.
Then came the roms. Thanks to the help of D13 and a few others, I tried my first rom. R2D2. I didn't like things about it, but I did it.
I also bricked for the first time and was shown how to do the sdf file. It worked fine. In fact, I bricked again a few days ago, as I'm playing around with this stuff, a lot, and I might have forgotten to select "mount system" first. No problem. SDF plus back ups cover a multitude of sins!
To make a long story short, I now have played with about 5 or 6 different themes. Some I won't use anymore, such as R2D2 because it wouldn't work with swype, but I have several backed up zip files to switch around.
I think I have so much that I have gone overboard, have become addicted and need serious help! I love this stuff!
Here's a list of my zipped backups:
1) 928Droid Black Glass X: This is probably my favorite one, at this point. It is the most "finished", meaning that I have it just the way I want it.
2) Big DX Serenity (Red): This is the most fun. I like the way the dev has modded apps, especially LPP (as I purchased that). It's pretty much finished, the way I like it. I have a bit more work to do, but I like it a lot.
3) RubiX Focused 0.3:: This is the newest one. I tried it yesterday, but didn't like it because it was too dark and it wouldn't sync my google calendar and it was waaay to dark to view.
I came across the zip files to fix this and how to install them. I like this muuuch better, now. I simply cannot believe how fast this ROM boots up. 10 seconds from the Android screen!
This is probably the least developed, for me. I mean, I don't have much set up, but I can see myself loving this one too!
4) 2.2 ota rooted 2.3.15
5) 2.2 2.3.15 deodexed.
I love being able to do this and I want to thank everyone who has helped me. I'm also happy that I've begun to help others, considering how very, very simple all of this is, once you understand it.
So, am I the only addict here? It's okay if I am. Does anyone else have a lot of themes and roms backed up on their SD? (Perhaps I should further back these zips up on my PC, no?
Titanium backup runs every night automaticallyI use SMS Backup+ to send all my texts to gmail automatically Flash new ROM (make backup and clear data and cache Reactivate phone Open Market, wait 30 mins to an hour for the apps to repopulate use SMS Backup+ to restore my text Use Titanium backup to restore all apps (Data Only) Restart phone I know Titanium can restore apps, but I'm worried about compatibility issues between ROMS. Is there a better way to do this? Is there a way to make it restore only market apps, not system apps? Am I missing something?

Everything went fine, except the phone tried to boot into recovery, showed the M logo for quite a while, then rebooted itself into its normal state without doing anything. I tried another rom, then tried flashing back to SPRecovery and tried entering recovery through holding X at bootup, battery pulls and the like and all the same result...

Do u have to wipe all data and cache before u switch Roms, if not what happens? I am afraid of losing all of my apps and contacts even tho my gmail will restore my contacts how do I know if it has the contacts saved and how would I get my apps back? One more thing, do u have to make more than one backup if u already have one that u r happy with?

View 8 Replies View RelatedJust a little heads up out there for people like me who flash roms ten times a day. If you haven't already experienced this issue, you are likely to come across it in the future.
It is probably a good idea to make a backup of the contents of your sd card to keep when flashing from an a2sd enable rom to a non a2sd enabled rom. If your partitioned for a2sd and flash a non a2sd rom it will hold you phone at the boot screen or send you into an endless boot cycle.
I had to take everything off my sd card, re format the card, then flash the rom before I could load everthing back onto the card.
I may be a total noob, and for all you smart people this is probably a no brainer. But if I can keep anyone else from having this headache I thought it best to post it.
Now that I'm rooted, I'm anxious to try out some custom ROMs, but too impatient for Eris-specific ones to be released. Do ya'll think ROMs made for the Hero will work fine on the Eris?
View 6 Replies View RelatedIt's too bad, really. I love the phone. I just can't afford it the data plan anymore. So, tomorrow or Saturday, I am switching to the Samsung Reality. From what I heard, it's a good phone, and it has quite a few features I have come to love on the Eris.
Hopefully, when I get a job during the school year, I will be able to afford the data again. I plan on keeping my Eris and going back to it when I have a bit more money.
I just wanted to say, until I return, thanks for all your help with this phone and the tips to make it not suck. I'll probably lurk on here and post maybe once every so often. This really is one of the best communities I have found on the Interwebz.
Is there ever going to be a new rom? Seems kilter things are dying down.

View 8 Replies View RelatedI just picked up the Droid Eris and am having serious reception issues when at work, which is here I am most of the time. I upgraded from an LG Chocolate, and did miss or have a dropped call for 2 years. After getting the Droid Eris I missed 3 calls the first day with the phone in my office. I receive adequate 1x coverage, but only spotty 3g coverage. My co-workers all have iPhones and have the same issue, but they have the ability to manually turn off the 3g, which then allows them to send and receive calls and texts without any problems using the at&T 1x network. Is there a way (or an app) that allows a user to turn off the 3g and only receive 1x coverage for the Droid Eris? I don't think turning off the mobilenetwork accomplishes this goal, but would like to know for sure.

View 1 Replies View RelatedROM discussions keep popping up in the root threads and is getting difficult to weed through for info. I can see what kind of ROMs are available, but to be honest, I'd really like to hear what people who are using various ones think of them as far as what works and what doesn't work and I'm sure new rooters would find this usefull as well when deciding.
I am currently using Plain Jane and although I like the Sense UI and most everything seems to work ok, I'm finding that I'm not totally happy with it. Little quirks like Facebook not populating my address book, and the font gets a tad hard to read with alot of text.
I don't think it supports a2sd, but I'm not 100% positive on that.
So what is everyone else using and what do you think of it as far as what works and what doesn't work in it.
The one thing I just couldn't get to work was Navigation in Froyo ROMs. It would always get stuck at "Searching for GPS." Well on xda, a fellow member told me to flash the new CFS kernal from Conap ) So this is what I did to finally get the Navigation to work!
1. Reboot into recovery and make a Nandroid backup just in case.
2. Wipe Dalvik cache
3. Flash new CFS kernal [GPL]2.6.29.6 CFS Kernel 9/4/10 - xda-developers(There is also a BFS kernal which is only if you want high benchmarks, CFS is for overall stability)
4. Once rebooted, clear the data of Maps in Settings > Applications > Manage Applications
5. Open up Maps and put in directions to an address, then click Navigate.
6. Once Navigation is up and running, it will get stuck at "Searching for GPS." Make a sandwich, wash dishes, etc.
7. Sooner or later it will get pass the "Searching for GPS" stage. (It took 15 minutes for me)
8. Navigation should be working instantly now, back out of Navigation, try a new address, and Navigation should instantly work without having to go through "Searching for GPS."
Maybe I am not getting it. but there is no app market in the Droid Does 1.1 ROM. so how do I get apps?
Also. it is not letting me sync my contacts and other things into my phone.
Would you ever switch back to a BlackBerry after now using the Eris?

View 3 Replies View RelatedI'm sorry for being a newbie with all this root stuff, but I've been searching and haven't been able to find a "set" guideline on what to do with my just-rooted Eris. So I've gotten my phone rooted with the DUMMIES phone-only guide and rom'ed with Evil Eris 4.0, but I don't know what exact measures to take from there to install Engtools, OC, flash new roms, etc. I just want to be careful with everything in order to have the best possible root experience D: Basically, I don't know what "pushing" is and how it's done. I think the first thing I want to do is install Engtools, following this:

But, is amon's recovery already installed from the dummies phone-only root? Do I just vol-up+power-on when the phone is off to start it up? After that, what do I do with the codes? How do I push?

Finally, how do I switch to a different ROM? Do I have to undo one ROM first?
Are there any compatible Custom Roms for the eris and do you believe that a CDMA Hero Rom (Such as fresh 1.1) will work on our Eris?
