HTC EVO 4G :: Hotspot ONLY On 4G
May 25, 2010
I just got off the phone with a Sprint Customer Care Specialist who kept insisting on telling me that I could only use the hotspot option if I had a 4G signal. That if I only was getting a 3G signal that I would not be able to activate the hotspot. I asked her several times if she was sure this was correct because I was under the impression that you just needed a data signal in order to set up a hotspot and it didn't matter if it was 3G or 4G. She put me on hold twice to confirm and came back with the same answer. This isn't right, is it?

How is Sprint going to deal with the hotspot charge once it becomes native to the OS?

I know Sprint's hotspot feature is to use the EVO "Wirelessly" with up to 8 diff. devices and that is what the $30 charge is for if you want to use that feature. It's my understanding that "Tethering" is a different thing where u directly connect your EVO to a laptop and use the "Internet Sharing" mode that way with only that device. I don't pay the extra $30 so i dont have hotspot for my EVO but I am able to Tether my phone to my laptop. Ive read that tethering is not allowed on the sprint network without purchasing the Hotspot feature and i can have my contract terminated if i continue to use tethering with my EVO. IS THAT TRUE? Is the tethering feature with the EVO at this point, just a feature that has not been disabled or patched yet or is it infact supported by sprint without needing to buy the Sprint Hotspot feature?????? And if it is freely available is there a cap to how much data i can use while tethering? cause you know, i do pay the damn """ $10 premium charge""" for each EVO on my account..

So have had my Evo since end of june using my hotspot 2 power up my laptops and ps3 no problems got 4g and hotspot going at the same time than I download 2.2 and every time i power up the hotspot the 4g drops out. I call sprint and dude tells me i was one of the lucky ones that got my hotspot for free? for the first month but now its gonna be 29.95 if i wanna use the hotspot? hello thats why i bought the fn thing? He said he would give me one more month for no charge but thats his final offer! I decline and ask him to give me the president so he can tell me why sprint is sticking it 2 me once again! Does the 2.2 software allow them to turn the hotspot one and off again at will? Until I figure this all out im leaving my other evo on 2.1.

I've seen a lot of scattered comments about this subject, but it all seems inconsistent. I would absolutely love to have my phone be a wireless hotspot for my computer. However, I'd like to do this without being charged from sprint. Now I know this is obviously something sprint wouldn't want their customers to do so I have two main questions:
1) Do you absolutely have to root your phone for it to be able to act as a hotspot for free?
2) If so, what would be the negative effects of rooting your phone. I'm assuming it would void warranty. Anything else?

I just got a WiFi IPad so i'm wanting to wireless tether. I already had PDNet for my notebook but of course thats not going to work for the IPad. I looked at the 3G Hotspot feature on the incredible and of course i tried it just to see if it would work and it doesn't. You just get a verizon page when you try to browse the web. I know in the past you had to root to be able to tether wirelessly. With Froyo does that still hold true or is there some type of app you can download off the android marketplace? I don't know if i'm big on rooting my phone. Verizon i think will charge $20 for the convenience right?

So we've heard that Froyo will include a wireless hotspot. Is this something that Sprint can/will be blocking?

I am having a strange problem with the Sprint mobile hotspot. When I am in a 4G area, my phone picks up and uses 4G with no problem. However, the instant I turn on the mobile hotspot, the 4G connection drops, and the phone reverts to 3G. The moment I turn off the hotspot, the phone goes back to 4G. If I turn the hotspot on/off from the Wireless & networks settings page, I can see that the instant the hotspot finishes initializing, the 4G line goes to "disconnected." It then goes to scanning and then sits at "obtaining IP address" for several seconds, at which point it starts that cycle over again. It goes through this cycle repeatedly until I turn off the hotspot, never getting past the "obtaining IP address" stage.I called Sprint tech support, and the best they came up with was to do a hard reset and see if that resolved the issue. Before I do that, I would like to see if anyone here has any idea what might cause this issue and how to resolve it short of a hard reset. I am running the official OTA froyo OS version. The update was pushed out the day after I got my Evo, so I do not know if this issue existed in 2.1.

I hope someone has had this problem. My hotspot was working perfectly yesterday, (dsl died so I'm using it on a Windows 7 laptop) but this morning I wake up and it won't connect properly. It connects to the phone but say unidentified, no network access and limited access. Net works fine on phone as its what I'm typing on now. This is really annoying as I haven't changed anything.

Does anyone know if we can log into the sprint wifi hotspot like a normal router?
I am hoping to forward some ports and hopefully open up my NAT.
I could not find anything, I know that the sprint overdrive has router settings like this.

Just thought I'd let everyone know, it DEFINITELY is possible. Before having an EVO I asked around all over and not many people would commit to saying it worked. I'm just here to say it works GREAT.
just got pinged at 95 ms and it works fine. Halo 3, Warcraft 3... they all work fantastic. Pretty much no different than my previous "high speed" cable connection.
I'm paying the $30 for the mobile hot spot and I have to say it's 100% worth it. I still only have 3g, no 4g yet... can only imagine how nice it will be then.

Does anyone know if the EVO can be used as a "hotspot" and also make calls at the same time? I am thinking serisously about getting rid of my cable tv, internet and phone provider if the EVO can be used this way, of course depending on how Sprint will be charging for its usage. I already pay for three phone for my wife, son and I and soon to add my daughter. So we are thinking about the EVO being a way to save a little money.

Does anyone have it? I noticed it missing from fresh1.0.
I still see it under wireless settings. I activated it and my laptop found it as something like "EVO B1****" (* = random numbers). It asked for a password, so I tried "00000000", and it would actually connect for a second and instantly drop.

Quick background, I am still on a $30/month SERO plan with my Touch Pro 2 and waiting to get a $10/24 month discount but Sprint has put a halt to all discounts for the time being, so I'm going to try when the iPhone 4 comes out and when Verizon gets their Droid X. I was going to sell my EVO but it seems I might as well keep it since I'm going to eventually use it.
So in the meantime, I'm going to hold onto the TP2/SERO and use the EVO when I am within a WiFi network. Thing is sometimes I want to bring the EVO out, so I thought maybe I could open up a WiFi hotspot with HTC's Wifi-Router software and connect to it with the EVO. But the EVO isn't recognizing the WiFi hotspot. My laptop can recognize it though. I tried to add the WiFi network but it'll say "Not in range, remembered".

When i opened my app drawer I noticed the 3g mobile hotspot app. I was wondering if I can use that without being charged or do i have to add that feature through verizon because that is what it says when i start it up. is it just a free service that is added as a perk with this rom or should i stay away from using it?

OK all you developers there is not a GOOD wifi hot-spot locater out there! I want to be able to put in my zip code or have it pull from my gps where I am and then tell me where the nearest wifi spots are. I used to have an awesome app on my Blackberry. It was user driven--as in we could add hot-spots and rate them. Jii Wire is trying. Their Iphone app works awesome . . their Android app . . well it stinks! Given it is a new app and hopefully they will continue to make it better but seems rather slow in coming. Google places has a wifi finder but unfortunately there are too many morons that don't get how important is to have their business listing be correct--if they have claimed it you can't even add it for them.
