Is there anyway to wireless tether without root FOR FREE? if not can i root without losing my apps and contacts and stuff? they are mostly on gmail but whatever anyways if yes link to tutorial?

I have seen this mentioned quite often here in the rooting forums, and was getting curious. A lot of people are stating that they are losing root when updating one of Pete's roms. I have loaded about all of them and haven't noticed I lost anything. I do have to reinstall busybox everytime though.. is this what people are referring to when they say "root"? Or am I missing something that I should probably go back and fix?

View 5 Replies View RelatedAll I really want to do is root my phone to allow free wifi tethering so I don't have to pay sprint another $30 a month, be able to control my CPU so I can try to help my battery a bit.... and whatever else I can do to help the battery.
What is my best choice for rooting to get what I want? And also, do I need to install a ROM to get this.
I know I need a wireless tether app for rooted phones, the setcpu app for my cpu control.
I've rooted 6 or so different android phones mainly using cf-autoroot, including an i9300, and never had any issues. But I have had a few issues rooting my 9503 using the cf-autoroot method (method #1 in this post). It aooeared to work, but SuperSU subsequently fell over, and Knox complained but after reading other posts I rectified that, but obviously not quite correctly:
After using cf-autoroot, SuperSU DID NOT appear in the apps list, but Google Play said it was installed but only presented the option to open it (not update or remove).
So I then tried flashing twrp (as per method #2 in this post) which all appeared to go successfully according to Odin. I was expecting to install superSU updater, as per step 3, but recovery mode appeared unchanged/stock so of course I couldnt flash anything as there was no option to do so. Yet there were no errors reported by Odin?
So I then got hold of the app file for SuperSU 1.93 and installed it (via Airdroid). It ran. It found knox. It removed it, and root was installed successfully (as verified by root checkers, titanium backup, droid wall and the like). So I concluded I had successfully rooted my 9305.But when I reboot SuperSU falls over again on boot up, and the version I added via Airdroid has disappeared, and of course there is no root mode.
But I can then restore root access after a reboot simply by following the same process, namley installing the supersu apk via Airdroid.And why is the later version of SuperSU disappearing on reboot?
If there anyway to do it other than pda net? im on a mac running 10.4 and they only support 10.5+.
View 13 Replies View RelatedI wanted to know if there's a way to tether with the USB cable. I currently have Velocity v0.03 w/ drellisdee's GNM Turbo 4 kernel. The WiFi tether works fine but I want a way to tether with wired so it doesn't eat up my Ally's battery. I seen this: android-wired-tether - Project Hosting on Google Code. But it requires RNDIS kernel (or whatever it is), and apparently the kernel I have loaded doesn't have this. Any other options or is there I can get the RNDIS kernal on my Ally? Yes, I realize it requires an app. I'm asking for a free alternative and NOT a paid one.

Not a major issue here, just sometimes when I reboot, when my phone starts back up again my Facebook app is gone and I have to reinstall it. Anyone know what's causing this? I'm using WarHeads but this also has happened on BH_MAN's other ROMs.

The process as I understand it is:
Make a Nandroid Backup (or do you need Nandroid+ext?)
copy SD contents to PC
Wipe phone, Wipe and repartition SD card w/ no ext
replace contents of SD card (while in Recovery you can mount the card, correct?)
flash ROM
Restore
The question I have is, will all the apps and settings be in the restore, or will I need to reinstall and set everything up again?
If so, how do i do it? can i still receive calls?

Is there a way to use my new e-mail address on my phone as my primary account (I don't mind doing a factory reset or anything) without losing my paid apps. It looks like there's an incompatibility between OSX and Android Wifi Tether.
Are there any alternatives for root users to tether using a Mac?
I rooted my phone for the first time yesterday. I have not yet flashed any ROM's, all I have done so far is remove some of the stock apps. I have lost my data connection a couple times today, usually a reboot will solve it, however it hasn't on one or two occasions. It seems to have started happening after changing my boot animation to something closer to the 1.5 boot animation. Is it possible that this new boot animation is causing my data connection problems.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI've had 4-5 apps so far do this to me, and every once in a while another app does the same - instead of displaying its proper name, like ChompSMS or wpToGo, the name would switch to the Java version, such as com.p1.chompsms or com.roundhill.androidWP.wpAndroid.
The name change occurs globally - in the app list, widget names, even the displayed name when I start the app. The only place where the names stay OK is the Market.
These changes don't happen after an update - just randomly but once they happen, they stay.
Some other apps include VoiceCallerID and Mystique Chapter 1.
WTF is going on with my phone?

View 11 Replies View RelatedWith much headache I've gotten PdaNet to work with DroidX via Bluetooth, despite some part of the Bluetooth driver not installing correctly/missing driver component.I've got the thing to what seemed to be the connected state on my dad's laptop, because he wants to browse at work, anyway.. I think the Bluetooth connection is working, but Verizon seems to be able to tell that its a tether because it pops up that Verizon page asking me to get a payed subscription for the tethering service (the site that shows the pretty chart where they say they want $30 more) no matter what site URL I type in.Any ideas why this happens? suggestions?Is there another solution that people have confirmed working for DroidX or am I doing something wrong? Also, I read that to use the USB connection to PdaNet I had to install the PdaNet Desktop app, which I tried to but kept failing install using the Motorola and Generic driver options, but I think despite this, PdaNet seems to not work right because of that page keeps popping up asking me to purchase the HotSpot plan addon. What do you all think? Thanks for help beforehand.

It acts like its crunching away when I open the browser and then I get a "limited connectivity" pop up on the computer. The phone only shows like 3kb downloaded and 30k uploaded. Any ideas or is my connection just that slow? I am using bugles 0.8.6. on the droid.

I was having extremely slow speeds and was going to try disconnecting and reconnecting but as soon as I disconnected, my phone rebooted. Now, every time I go into the wireless tether for root users app, it force closes. What the Hell am I supposed to do? I need this to work.

Anyone else experience it dropping the internet connection or wifi after about an hour? It works great up to that point and doesn't show an error or anything but it just stops communicating. I have to stop tethering and start tethering and its back up again. Its not a huge issue, just something that I would resolve if I could. It was happening on pre9 but I upgraded to pre13 and it still happens. Im on Myns RLS3 with Netarchy 4191bfs kernel but it was doing it on the stock HTC #10 kernel that came with Myns.
